I base my assumption on the fact that I work at a company that has *hundreds* of FBSD boxen, all of which arew on WD for the reasons I have gone into. I figure if we'vew done this, it is reasonable to assume others have too. And after looking through the archives first, there was a lot of anecdotal evidence supporting this theory. > GENERIC only has ata/ad, so I'd expect to see a > lot more "sysinstall can't write to my disk" questions. Oddly enough, I can say with authority that these issues don't show up until the disk has been in use, and starts to hit the ~40-60% usage mark. Prior to that, it's fine. > I seem to > remember having problems with the da driver on my laptop back in 2000, > but that was a loong time ago, and I have quite a few other machines > running kernels from that era that have no problems at all. > > If you actually have a bunch of machines that ata won't work on, maybe > you could ship one to Soeren and let him take a look at it? Gladly, if it will be shipped back when done. In fact, I'll ship two. The "standard build" here, which is a PPRo and the "current" which is an Asus SiS based board with a PIII-866. -- Yours, J.A. To be honest, you're the first person in months I've heard complain about this, so I suspect there aren't a "lot" of people in your situation. I assume you've sent appropriate PRs and discussed your problems with the ATA developer? Kris pgp0.pgp Description: PGP signature

Just means that I am stuck at 4.8R from here on in. So are a lot of other people... On Tue, 23 Sep 2003, Mike Tancsa wrote: > Sounds like you are out of luck. Sounds like you are out of luck. Perhaps the other OSes that work for you is the way to go. ---Mike At 08:00 PM 23/09/2003, J.A. Terranson wrote: On Tue, 23 Sep 2003, Mike Tancsa wrote: > What hardware do you have that does not work with the ata drivers ? Mike, I don't want to get into a flame war here, as I've already been through this when the ATA drivers were first released: no matter what hardware I've used them with, I've had issues. The oldest I can understand, but I gave it another go two weeks ago with modern, brand new hardware (a new SiS based Asus that was on the HCL when I bought it, and a Maxtor 40g IDE) and had the same results. The 4.8 was rebuilt last night with WD drivers, and the 5.1 was *supposed* to be rebuilt tonight, thus my email. The ATA drivers are buggy has hell, regardless of all the screaming I've heard to the contrary: timeouts, with or without DMA disabled, hard write errors, etc. I just can't do it - especially since I am constantly told the drivers are good, and my hardware is bad: if I take the setup that dies under ATA and load either WD or *any other OS*, they work flawlessly. I am a FBSD shop, have been since 2.2.5R, but I cannot use the ATA drivers - I need something reliable (speed is irrelevant if it doesn't work). Hrmmm I wasn't meaning to rant on you. I just looked up and there it was :-( Sorry... Frustration. > > ---Mike //Alif > At 07:40 PM 23/09/2003, J.A. Terranson wrote: > > >Yes, I know they are obsolete. What hardware do you have that does not work with the ata drivers ? ---Mike At 07:40 PM 23/09/2003, J.A. Terranson wrote: Yes, I know they are obsolete.
