Of course I meant _VMS_ executables.
 ^

Also I don't know if there would be a way to run OS/2 EXE
files. This is probably only possible with a VM running the
appropriate OS/2 version. This approach might also apply
for running Novell NetWare EXE files. There are several
VM systems available for FreeBSD, for example VMWare and
VirtualBox.

I hope I have covered all typical possibilities of what
"exe file" could mean. :-)

This doesn't sound like a Windows only error.

Regarding to driver issues you better stay with Microsoft or switch to
Apple. Hardware and free/libre and open source software requires the
user to learn and take care if hardware is supported.

Around 1 GiB could be ok, but also be not enough RAM, but it seems not
to be an issue.

Free/libre and open source software does less good support proprietary
codecs and software. At the moment there is a thread about Adobe Flash
on this list. The best choice could be Windows, perhaps installed as
guest to a virtual machine, so that you always can restore it by using
snapshots.

For multimedia Linux might be better than FreeBSD. Neither Linux, nor
FreeBSD tend to lose data, you even shouldn't lose data when using one
of Microsoft's less good Windows versions. It's more likely that users
have less good backup and archiving strategies.

If you want to consume multimedia by the Internet, you likely need to
install security updates and software to use stuff based on proprietary
software. You could set up a text editor and never need to update or to
reinstall something, but the Internet and consuming multimedia likely
need updates from time to time.

Start an adventure ;), nobody will give you a guarantee,
"self-responsibility" is a catchword for free/libre and open source
software.

FreeBSD and Linux are similar operating systems, on both kernels more or
less the same multimedia applications do run, but the more recent
versions are provided by Linux and multimedia is better supported for
Linux.

I'm an Arch Linux user, it's similar to FreeBSD regarding to a port like
system, however, for your needs IMO Debian Linux stable release might be
the less risky choice. OTOH, why not simply testing FreeBSD?

Definitely no bluescreens in FreeBSD. The system will behave
exactly as intended and won't "change its mind" a few days
after installation. :-)

> dual core processor 4000+ 2.11 GHz 960 MB RAM?

That's a 64 bit CPU, if I remember correctly. The AMD64 version
should run fine. But as you are a little bit "low on RAM", you
might consider using the i386 version (32 bit version) if you
don't _need_ to run any 64 bit application. Especially as you've
mentioned to run EXE files, this might be the better solution.
>From what I've heared, wine (the "Windows" compatibility pack)
runs better on i386 than on amd64. (I'm running it myself on
the i386 OS on a 64 bit system without any problems.)

> im always in internet watching live camers,what do you suggest
> me to use os type?

Is this via web? In this case, only the web browser matters.
The typical candidates Firefox and Chrome should be fine.
The OS does not matter here.

If you need a proprietary program to watch the live cameras,
often available only for an outdated "Windows" version, running
it with (the mentioned) wine should work. (I've successfully
tried something like that with a program to watch CCTV cameras
via Internet.)

> i like to save pictures and videos and never lost them,if you
> think your os is gonna spoil and lost my all files then i dont
> need it.

Definitely no problem. But keep in mind: _You_ are responsible
for creating backups! FreeBSD offers excellent tools to do so,
no matter if you want to backup to disks, DVDs, the Cloud, or
even to old-fashioned tape.

Saving pictures from videos is no problem. There is mplayer and
mencoder. It plays, records and converts _everything_.

> i want stable os and never to reinstall or update

That approach is unreasonable, I think. You _should_ update when
security updates become available. It's in _your_ interest to do
so, because effciency, security and usability improves from version
to version. Luckily, FreeBSD has an easy way of updating the OS.
It's _independent_ (!) from your installed applications and of
course from your data. You can also decide to update your programs
independently.

However, a "install once, then keep using" scenario is easily
possible with FreeBSD. (My home system has been installed in
summer 2011 and worked _flawlessly_ since that point, never
touch a running system.)

I suggest you make yourself familiar with FreeBSD by using the
resources from http://www.freebsd.org/ and you _might_ also want
to check out PC-BSD (might be perfect for what you want) and
VirtualBSD (easy way to try it out without installing it).

Try 9.2 for AMD64. The i386 version should also work (as
you are "low on RAM" if that might matter, depending on
what non-OS software you're going to run on that machine).

download port directory/tarvall ?

2013-01-12 Thread Peter Vereshagin
Hello.

I used to download the selected port's directory from cvsweb.

Now cvsweb seems to be not updated any more.

I am missing this feature from svnweb.freebsd.org.

Is there any way to download the particular port's directory?

Tried with 'svn co' but it downloads all of the ports without directory
selection, or did I overlook a thing?

Thank you.

9.0 base.txz ftp download time out

2012-02-19 Thread Fbsd8

I have a scripted ftp download for 8.x and 9.0 distribution files.
Yes I have the correct paths.
When I target 8.x releases it downloads the multiple distribution files.
To get the complete group takes about 20 minutes and ends cleanly.

But when I try to fetch the 9.0 base.txz file it says 100% completed and
then times out. It also runs about 20 minutes just to download the
single file. I do get the base.txz file downloaded but it ends uncleanly
saying it timed out.

All the mirrors issue standard login messages saying there are
restrictions in effect. My question is there some restriction about time
allowed per file downloaded? And now that the layout of the 9.0
distribution files has changed to a large file compared to many small
files in a directory as for 8.0 is this causing the base.txz file
download to time out? IE: does the ftp restrictions need to be changed
for the new 9.0 distribution file?

Get it with csup and be sure to set the correct tag in your supfile
(probably RELENG_9_0, for the 9.0 security branch or RELENG_9 for the
stable development branch). In the long term it's simplest and safest to
start from an empty src directory anyway.

Page sources are available in the various on-line VCSes used by the

Hmmm manpages are available on the distribution media for a release.
 For instance, look at:

There are several combinations of $ARCH and $VERSION available -- but
only for released versions, so 8.2-RELEASE is the most up to date available.

You'll need to download all of the files in that directory. Well,
except for the CHECKSUMS.* and *.mtree files. Although not absolutely
necessary, verifying the checksums is a good idea... The format is a
split-up tar archive; if you read install.sh you'll see how to extract
the contents. Be careful though -- by default unpacking that tarball
will overwrite the manpages in /usr/share/man

Cheers,

Matthew

How are you downloading it?

FTP / HTTP etc? Have you tried using a different server/mirror to

 Thank you for your feedback. While I have received various ideas and
 am still working on them, I recently added changes for the followng:

 1. Use $TARGET and $TARGET_ARCH in ISO image names. Now it is like
the following:

FreeBSD-9.0-HEAD-20110809-JPSNAP-i386-i386-bootonly.iso

Also, SHA-256 checksum files have been added in the same
directory.

 2. Use a clean build environment. This should fix an iso9660 format
breakage issue in makefs(8).

 3. The uncompressed tree of the release tarballs is added under the
trees/ directory.

 Currently, snapshots of 7 platforms are being built natively.

 The HEAD snapshot build is finally getting recovered (currently for

The link is good. You should probably configure your ftp client to use

And if ftp just won't cooperate with you, you can always go to

grab a torrent file using HTTP and use a BitTorrent client to get what

You don't. It once was the kernel ppp module but became unsupported and was
removed from the system. Use userland ppp as described here:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/userppp.html

Pay particular attention to the note at the top. IIRC the old device sio in
the kernel config was changed to uart. Make sure you have this and note the
corresponding serial port renaming that accompanied the change.

I haven't used a modem in quite some time now, but that ought to get you

I don't think that would work, presumably it would just cause an
attempt at an ssl connection to the proxy, followed by a GET request
for an https URL. https through a proxy is supposed to use a CONNECT to
tunnel through to the actual server.

Why FreeBSD fetch does not download a file via a proxy for HTTPS URLS (the same works fine for HTTP urls)

2011-02-23 Thread chandra reddy
Hi All,

I am working on a project where i need to download a file via a proxy server
using HTTPS protocol. I found that fetch does not work/support HTTPS
requests over a proxy.

My setup would be like this:

Intranet
Internet
---
|  https or  http  |
 https
| Client m/cs -> Porxy Server
---> Destination Server (or Download server)
|  |
---

I can use https or http protocol between Client and Proxy but only HTTPS is
used between proxy and Destination server(or Download server) .

I tried to use "squid" proxy as my proxy server and tried to download a file
from my download server to Client m/c using FreeBSD "fetch" command.
It fails to download a file via proxy for HTTPS requests Please note that
Proxy setup is 100% correct and a web server (Apache) running fine.
[I have tested it using my Mozilla browser on my PC].

I have done the following:

1. *Download a file using HTTPS over a proxy server*

#env HTTP_PROXY=http://:3128/ /usr/sbin/fetch -v -o
/tmp/download.out 'https:///index.htm'

looking up

connecting to:443

connection established

fetch: https:///index.htm Authentication error
Even I have tried this also and found the same error.

#env HTTP_PROXY=https://:3128/ /usr/sbin/fetch -v -o
/tmp/download.out 'https:///index.htm'

My question is why it is not connected via "Proxy sever". It tries to
connect directly. I could see that if I use HTTP protocol then it connects
via proxy.
Please see the logs here.

2. *Download a file using HTTP over a proxy server*

#env HTTP_PROXY=http://:3128/ /usr/sbin/fetch -v -o
/tmp/download.out 'http:///index.htm'

looking up

connecting to :3128

connection established

requesting http://destination-server-ip/index.htm
Even I have tried this also and found that works fine.

#env HTTP_PROXY=https://:3128/ /usr/sbin/fetch -v -o
/tmp/download.out 'http:///index.htm'

I have debugged "fetch" and found that the following check is stopping HTTPS
requests over a proxy.

*http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/lib/libfetch/http.c

 .OR.
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/lib/libfetch/http.c?annotate=1.78.2.5.4.1

*

   1375:
1.58 <http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/lib/libfetch/http.c#rev1.58>
 des  1376:if (purl && strcasecmp(URL->scheme,
SCHEME_HTTPS) != 0) {
1.51 <http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/lib/libfetch/http.c#rev1.51>
 des  1377:URL = purl;

I could overcome the above problem if I do the following change.

   1375:
1.58 <http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/lib/libfetch/http.c#rev1.58>
 des  1376:if (purl) {
1.51 <http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/lib/libfetch/http.c#rev1.51>
 des  1377:URL = purl;

I want to know why HTTPS over proxy is not working with "libfetch". I want
to make it work how can do it?

Thanks
-Chandra

Actually, /dev has been managed by the devfs virtual filesystem driver since
FreeBSD 5 (maybe even before that), so a reboot should repopulate /dev with
the correct data. There shouldn't be anything that rsync would be able to
sync.

still have a few 6.3 systems around because the commercial backup client we
have for an enterprise-wide solution will not install on FreeBSD8.1?

This is one of those times when we are fighting the war with what we

I must restore the /dev directory on a 6.3 system and rsync would

Can one Download Old Packages?

2011-01-10 Thread Martin McCormick
Is there a safe site to find the rsync package for
FreeBSD6.3? We still have a few 6.3 systems around because the
commercial backup client we have for an enterprise-wide solution
will not install on FreeBSD8.1?

This is one of those times when we are fighting the war
with what we presently have rather than what we wish we had.

I must restore the /dev directory on a 6.3 system and
rsync would have done it hours ago but I didn't know that the
few remaining 6.3 systems didn't have it installed.

Thank you.

Yeah, you are right, I missed that. However, the problem is that you didn't
specify the full path to portsnap. That will cause it to fail and the&&
operator won't let it proceed. When using cron, you need to specify the
full path because cron doesn't have access to all the environment variables
your normal shell does.

If what you say is correct then I shouldn't get the result of
pkg_version -vIL telling me that there are ports that need an upgrade,
should I?

Hello list.

I have the following in /etc/crontab

@reboot root portsnap -I cron update && /root/bin/cv_portsnap_cron &&
pkg_version -vIL=

The script /root/bin/cv_portsnap_cron

#!/bin/sh
portmaster --clean-distfiles-all
portmaster -aF

Message received from cron:

===>>> Gathering distinfo list for installed ports

===>>> Checking for stale distfiles

libxul-1.9.2.9_1< needs updating (index has 1.9.2.12)

Even so I do not get the distfiles downloaded.

Where am I going wrong?

thanks for the suggestion! but the other machines on this network do
not use the FreeBSD machine as a router. They merely reference it as
their first choice of DNS servers. So as of now networking is good to
go for all machines.

best!!

Sorry for not getting back any sooner, went camping in the mountains for a
bit. Glad to hear it is resolved. The above is accomplished via this:

defaultrouter="192.168.1.1"  in your /etc/rc.conf.

If you are using this machine as a gateway for the other machines and it is
between your FIOS router and the other machines, the defaultrouter value for
the other machines would point to the gateway box's internal facing address.

hey listers!! sorry for all the trouble.. just as an FYI it turned out
to NOT be a DNS issue at all!!!

 it was a routing issue...

this command apparently did the trick...

[r...@lbsd2:/usr/home/bluethundr]#/etc/rc.d/routing restart
add net default: gateway 192.168.1.1

[r...@lbsd2:/usr/home/bluethundr]#ping google.com

64 bytes from 173.194.33.104: icmp_seq=2 ttl=55 time=14.531 ms

sometimes it's the simplest solutions under our noses. :)

Re: download cvsup?

2010-10-22 Thread Tim Dunphy
guys,

 thanks for the input. busy couple of days sorry for not following up sooner.

 at any rate, I tried many suggestions.

 Here is the current state of things:

  This is a working resolv.conf on the rest of the network which are
CentOS machines:

  [r...@lbsd2:/usr/home/bluethundr]#cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain summitnjhome.com
nameserver 192.168.1.44
nameserver 71.250.0.12
nameserver 4.2.2.2

 I rsync'ed this file to the bsd server from a CentOS machine and this
is what happens when you try to resolve internally, then externally
(also tried editing it manually of course):

[r...@lbsd2:/usr/home/bluethundr]#host bsd2
bsd2.summitnjhome.com has address 192.168.1.44
[r...@lbsd2:/usr/home/bluethundr]#host sum1
sum1.summitnjhome.com is an alias for lCent01.summitnjhome.com.
lCent01.summitnjhome.com has address 192.168.1.42

[r...@lbsd2:/usr/home/bluethundr]#ping yahoo.com
ping: cannot resolve yahoo.com: Host name lookup failure

this is how my named.conf looks:

options {
// Relative to the chroot directory, if any
directory   "/etc/namedb";
pid-file"/var/run/named/pid";
dump-file   "/var/dump/named_dump.db";
statistics-file "/var/stats/named.stats";

Also i notice it's

[r...@lbsd2:/usr/home/bluethundr]#ping yahoo.com
ping: cannot resolve yahoo.com: Host name lookup failure

with forwarders commented out

 and

[r...@lbsd2:/usr/home/bluethundr]#ping yahoo.com
PING yahoo.com (72.30.2.43): 56 data bytes
ping: sendto: No route to host
ping: sendto: No route to host

with forwarders enabled:
forwarders {
71.250.0.12; 4.2.2.2;
};

or even just

  forwarders {
  192.168.1.1;
};

enabled.. I'm still quite puzzled.. I'm hoping that this problem won't
require me to backup my most important configurations (DNS, LDAP,
Apache) and reinstall.. cuz that's uhmmm.. cheating! ;) not to mention
a pain in the firggin' arse... guh
// If named is being used only as a local resolver, this is a safe default.
// For named to be accessible to the network, comment this option, specify

   #listen-on   { 127.0.0.1; };

running DNS itself by default, with it pointing to Verizon's name servers.
So he could try using 192.168.1.1 in his named.conf forwarders directive.
This would just recurse out to Verizon's name servers and should get a basic
external resolution going, provided he has not altered the default router
setup.

Example from mine: (don't just cut and paste but adjust as required)

options {
directory   "/etc/namedb";
pid-file"/var/run/named/pid";
dump-file   "/var/dump/named_dump.db";
statistics-file "/var/stats/named.stats";

listen-on   { 127.0.0.1; 192.168.10.1; };

allow-recursion {127.0.0.1; 192.168.10.0/24;};

// If you've got a DNS server around at your upstream provider, enter
// its IP address here, and enable the line below. This will make you
// benefit from its cache, thus reduce overall DNS traffic in the Internet.

forwarders {
 208.67.222.222; 208.67.220.220; 192.168.1.1;
};

//  query-source address * port 53;
};

---/ Below are snipped out zone file directives for my local stuff /---

The first two IP addresses in my forwarders clause are for OpenDNS. You
could delete them so as to only have 192.168.1.1 and your FreeBSD's DNS
server will then forward requests to your FIOS router which will then
request from Verizon. Use of the listen-on and allow-recursion is not
necessary, but if you decide to utilize make sure they reflect values which
apply to your situation. Do rndc reload or reboot to take effect.

I think he has some other issues pending as well, but one thing at a time.

This is the current state of affairs:

My gateway is a FiOS router at 192.168.1.1 I have a semi-fancy netgear

1) FreeBSD (God machine) that is SSH gateway, DNS/BIND server,
OpenLDAP server, Apache22 server and MySQL 5.1 server.
2) Centos 1 machine - host xen instances that are stored on a san
3) Centos 2 machine - hosts the rest of the xen instances all of which
are stored in the same NFS nas mount (/mnt/store/xen).

The BSD really kinda runs the show I use that as the base from which

Even with IPv6 enabled things should still function even though IPv6 may not
actually be in use. Sometimes it happens with DNS lookups it will try
looking for an record first [IPv6], then time out and fall back to the
normal IPv4 A record. This will just show as a short wait period and
ultimately eventually resolves.

I suspect that you are not even getting this far and the problem is
something else. Just for the sake of simplifying things you could eliminate
IPv6 from the picture if you are truly not using it. However, I do not think
it is actually the cause (I could always be wrong here).

This truly has me confused. In the above ifconfig output it is showing an IP
address assigned of 192.168.1.44 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255.

What I do not understand at all is why you would be wanting to NFS mount
from 192.168.1.44 *to* 192.168.1.44, as indicated by the above fstab
entries.

Again, for the sake of simplification with divide and conquer, make sure all
mountd, rpcbind, nfs_server, and nfs_client daemons are deactivated.
Eliminate all things superfluous to troubleshooting the DNS problem. Once
DNS gets fixed you can add stuff back one at a time.

Yes - leave fstab with no remote mounting/NFS stuff for now.

You should be able to ping by IP any/all machines within your local network.
Sounds like this does work, but confirm and don't 'assume'. Next try and
ping by IP to a host out on the Internet. Since you cannot resolve any names
here is the IP to www.netbsd.org: 204.152.190.12. If you cannot ping by
IP out from your network to the outside you do not have basic gateway
connectivity working. If this is the case it will have to get fixed first.

If you are attempting this from the same machine as you are running BIND on,
it might be better for it's resolv.conf to look like this instead:

nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 192.168.1.1

192.168.1.1 is my FIOS router which has it's own DNS server. It is also
pointed at the same OpenDNS servers as my forwarders directive (a snippet
from my named.conf below:)

listen-on   { 127.0.0.1; 192.168.10.1; };

allow-recursion {127.0.0.1; 192.168.10.0/24;};

forwarders {
 208.67.222.222; 208.67.220.220; 192.168.1.1;
};

My local DNS on my gateway/firewall box is a hybrid which only has zones for
my local .test.zip 192.168.10.0/24 LAN. All other requests get forwarded out
and cached. Here is what sockstat -4l looks like on this box:

bind named  835   20 tcp4   192.168.10.1:53   *:*
bind named  835   21 tcp4   127.0.0.1:53  *:*

bind named  835   512 udp4  192.168.10.1:53   *:*
bind named  835   513 udp4  127.0.0.1:53  *:*

I do not listen on the external interface as I'm only running a cache/hybrid
and do not need zone transfers as I am not delegated any SOA.

Thanks guys! But to give more background the host in question IS
networking, at this point I can ssh into and out of it.. I just can't
resolve externally.

[r...@lbsd2:/usr/ports]#ifconfig
bge0: flags=8843 metric 0 mtu 1500
options=9b
ether 00:14:22:38:9e:eb
inet6 fe80::214:22ff:fe38:9eeb%bge0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1
inet 192.168.1.44 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.1.255

status: active
plip0: flags=8810 metric 0 mtu 1500
lo0: flags=8049 metric 0 mtu 16384
options=3
inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128
inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x3
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff00
[r...@lbsd2:/usr/ports]#

 Also the rest of the network is currently working. I am writing this
to you from another machine on the same network as the bsd machien.

 I was able to download the ports tarball from the freebsd ftp site
and scp it over to the bsd host. so that minor crisis has been
solved. (grin).

 But it is still quite necessary for me to get this host resolving
external hosts of course!

 And yes I now realize that csup is part of the base system. But in
order for me to use it I must resolve!

 Not sure how this might have cause this but I edited my fstab file
with some nfs mounts like so:

192.168.1.44:/mnt/nas/mnt/nas   nfsrsize=32768,wsize=32768,timeo=14,intr
192.168.1.44:/mnt/store /mnt/store nfsrsize=32768,wsize=32768,timeo=14,intr
192.168.1.44:/mnt/home  /home  nfsrsize=32768,wsize=32768,timeo=14,intr

And when I rebooted the host pretty much it all went haywire! LDAP,
DNS, Apache, MySQL, and even ALL NETWORKING which normally started
with the host stopped working. I now have to start each one by hand
whatever I try I can't seem to resolve external hosts, tho.

 So I restored the fstab file from backup and still I am stuck not resolving.

 /etc/resolv.conf looks ok to me so I would think I that I could ping
out of the network. Sadly this is not the case!

[r...@lbsd2:/usr/ports]#cat /etc/resolv.conf
domain  summitnjhome.com
nameserver  192.168.1.44
nameserver  4.2.2.2

csup is part of the system, no need to use cvsup from the ports any longer.

csup is cvsup rewritten with C and exists in the base system. You no longer
need to install cvsup, just use csup.

You do not have to use sysinstall just to install ports. It is available as
a tarball you can download and decompress. Use csup afterwards for an update
to ensure you have pulled in any changes which may have occurred after the
tarball was generated.

You will, of course, need to get your network working first.

Your network interface isn't connecting to anything, such as a hub, switch,
or another computer via crossover cable at the physical layer. You need to
fix this first, then worry about why the DNS is not working.

Start with simple things such as substituting a known good cable from a
working machine. Examine the LEDs on both the NIC and the hub/switch.
Usually these will not be lit if there is no link. Is the hub/switch
defective? Or locked up? I've seen hubs and switches lock up and a power
cycle would make them operate again, for a while. Hubs or switches that lock
up have an intermittent defect and should not be depended upon for the long
run.

Verify if you are using the correct driver. What version is the OS? Search
bug reports and mail lists for known issues, e.g. such as someone else
reported a problem with quite similar symptoms and the devs have already
addressed it in HEAD and possibly MFC'd it to STABLE.

Of course, if there is a fix you can't get at it until your network works.
But you can also back up the train and tell us things like: did it used to
work? and what did you do, or change, that made it begin not working? Some
more details might give the 'fresh set of eyes' more to work with.

download cvsup?

2010-10-17 Thread Tim Dunphy
hello,

 I accidentally deleted my ports tree thinking that cvsup was already
installed. it wasn't. :(

 I seem to be having a little trouble resolving external hosts tho my
trusty named server on this host is working fine to resolve the local
network. I need to reinstall my ports with sysinstall but to do that i
need to resolve externally of course. I think this problem could use a
fresh set of eyes.

I can recommend installing openjdk16 instead of jdk16. It is a much more
recent version of Java.

Looking at the work that has been put into making FreeNAS, it might be
worthwhile
to ask the developers when a version based on 8.x and supporting your card
will be available.

But if that is not an option, looking at the features of FreeNAS
[http://freenas.org/features], I'd say you need _at least_ the following ports
to more-or-less replicate the functionality of FreeNAS;

Network protocols:
  - net/samba34 (for windows clients)
  - net/netatalk (for Apple clients)
  - ftp/proftpd (FTP)
  - net/rsync
  - net/unison
  - (NFS comes with the base system)
  - dns/inadyn
  - net/istgt

Extra Services
  - net-p2p/transmission (bittorrent)
  - net/mediatomb (UPnP server)
  - audio/firefly (iTunes/DAAP)
  - www/lighttpd or www/apache22 (web server)

System tools
  - sysutils/smartmontools (disk monitoring)
  - sysutils/rsyslog55 (secure remote logging)
  - ports-mgmt/portmaster (keeping ports up to date)
  - (portsnap comes with the base system.)
  - (sshd comes with the base system.)

What you'll be missing is the FreeNAS web setup tools. I would download and
install FreeNAS on a virtual machine just to look at the configurations for
the different ports, so you don't have to figure that out all by yourself. :-)

On the other hand, if you only have to serve files for MS Windoze clients, you
might get by with installing samba and its dependencies and not much
else. Anything that you don't install is one less item to configure and keep
up-to-date.

2010-05-17 Thread SmartTech Sales

Thanks Jerry

I had a reply that I should rather use 8.0 and there I can only download
disk1, the rest I can get from the ports collection. (I'm not sure that I
can download all 2GB of the DVD successfully, our bandwidth in SA is not
great or very reliable) We want to use freeBSD to setup NAS, do I need any
of the ports to do this?

I'm not looking at freeNAS because the SATA RAID card that I'm looking at
does not support it, the Adaptec 51645 card supports freeBSD though.

Depends one circumstances. If you have a good network connection, you
can install over the net and then need only the ...disc1.iso or
possibly the dvd1.iso.

If your net connection is not good enough to support an online install,
then you need either the ...dvd1.iso[.gz] or the first three
of the CDs ...disc1.iso, ...disc2.iso and disc3.iso and you do the
install from local media.

The documentation online has descriptions of what is on these disks,
though I suppose the language use might be a bit arcane for a newbie.

Generally I find it better to install over the net if possible -
but you at least need some starter media - CD/DVD of course.

Disc1 is all you need to install the OS. The other disk images contain
mostly precompiled 3rd party packages -- I think the reason that disk2
and disk3 got dropped was that even the size of two CD images is just a
fraction of what it would take to contain most of the available ports.
Rather than make an invidious choice (accompanied, no doubt, by
interminable arguments and bikeshedding) about what should be included,
they decided to reserve the .iso images for FreeBSD and let people
download individual pkgs from the FTP sites instead.

Cheers,

Matthew

PS. Just to make sure: you do understand that the i386 arch is for all
Intel and AMD processors running in *32bit* mode? If you've got a more
modern Intel Xeon or Core2 or later processor (or indeed anything AMD
since about 5 years ago), then the amd64 arch will give you better
results. As the name suggests, this is the *64bit* version of FreeBSD
for Intel derived architectures. Take care to choose the right
alternative before you put much work into building your system, as
switching from one to the other is pretty painful.

This is a good option, if the machine is connected into internet and
downloading the base system and ports is okay for you.

03/21/2010 02:10PM542,836,736 FreeBSD-7.3-RELEASE-i386-disc3.iso

Boot disc with base system packaged and ports added. Best option if
you are mostly planning to use prebuild software or the machine is not
connected.

03/21/2010 02:12PM324,126,720 FreeBSD-7.3-RELEASE-i386-docs.iso
03/21/2010 02:11PM  2,022,695,069 FreeBSD-7.3-RELEASE-i386-dvd1.iso.gz

Basically discs1-3 'merged' in one DVD image, better than the separate
discs IMHO if you have DVD drive available.

'Repair disc' that can also be used on manual installations and such -
good to have available in case of emergencies, but not really
necessary.

FreeBSD ISOs available at very fast download

2010-05-12 Thread David Voisin

Hi,

I work for a young company who developed a fast download platform for
huge files (we mix central servers and pear to pear).
I convinced my managers to put some ISO files in the platform and leave
them available free of charge.

So if you have users interested to download ISO very fast feel free to
give them the download links.

Our webpage for FreeBSD :

http://linux-iso.voddnet.com/distribution.php?d=freebsd

We mainly focus on Linux but we wanted to put at least one BSD distribution.

The download links (you can put on any webpage) :

CD FreeBSD 8.0 i386  -
 http://central-c-001.voddnet.com/command/servlet/Command?type=3&client=4&auto=true&oeuvre=499
CD FreeBSD 8.0 amd64  -
http://central-c-001.voddnet.com/command/servlet/Command?type=3&client=4&auto=true&oeuvre=500

We can change and put the ISO you wish, as long as we still have enough
disk space on our machines ;)

Any remark is welcomed.

Regards,

David

There could have been a problem during download, try again. This is a

For the initial install? Yes -- you're right: there's no obvious
'install via HTTP' option. Trying to install via HTTP proxy and saying
ftp.freebsd.org:80 when prompted seems like it should work to me, but I
haven't verified that.

Otherwise, your options are to download the disk1 or DVD .iso images,
and install from those -- they have everything you need to install the
base system -- or else to download the install sets out-of-band to a
local filesystem and install that way.

One handy hint when installing is *don't feel you have to do everything
from within sysinstall*. Your priority should be to get the OS up and
running: everything else you can do from within the OS, which is a far
more flexible and powerful platform than sysinstall. That power comes
at the cost of maybe not being particularly obvious exactly how to do
what you want, but that is why the Handbook exists.

If you're trying to install packages via HTTP rather than FTP, then try
setting PACKAGEROOT in your environment. Like this:

   PACKAGEROOT=http://ftp.freebsd.org ; export PACKAGEROOT (Borne-shell)

or

   setenv PACKAGEROOT http://ftp.freebsd.org   (Csh-alikes)

then use 'pkg_add -r pkgname' in the usual way. See login.conf(5) and
cap_mkdb(1) for one way of setting such variables in the environment
automatically when you login.

Cheers,

Matthew

I haven't had any problems building gnuplot or pdflib from source (and I
haven't seen any complaints on the ports list either). You'll need to
provide your error messages before we can help you with that.

As for the maxima package install problem, gnuplot depends on pdflib, which
is an optional component. pdflib has licensing restrictions that prevent a
binary package from being created. There are a couple hundred ports like
this, where they will build fine from ports but you aren't allowed to ship
the binary.

The gnuplot port should probably turn the pdflib option off when building
packages for distribution (similar to how the audio/grip or audio/sox ports
handle their dependency on audio/lame). If you build the pdflib port
yourself, or build the gnuplot port and turn off the PDF option, then you'll
be able to install the maxima package. It won't try and install things that
are already on the system.

Gnuplot builds and runs just fine here. I've been using it continuosly since

I REPEAT: maxima can not be built, because gnuplot fails on download

2009-10-21 Thread Henry Olyer
Dear Dan:
I don't want to cause people to jump up and down, but one fact I am
absolutely certain of!, is the following;

Take a hard-drive you can write on, burn a copy of FBSD 7.2 onto a CD, and
do the basic install. Then, when the base system is up, run sysinstall and
do a "Configure" followed by "Packages". Then go to "math" and select
maxima.

Then watch.

Gnuplot, a dependency of maxima will fail. And thus without using the "-f"
flag (as part of a PKG_ADD command,) you can not load a recent copy of
Maxima on FreeBSD.

This is the case not only for 7.2, but it's been true since at least version
6.1

And Gnuplot seems to be missing something called PDFlib -- it may have been
redacted by someone who decided that it wasn't supposed to be public, I
don't know. But notice I am describing two problems. One, an install of
Maxima fails using the package method, because Gnuplot doesn't install, and
also, using the ports tree, (see, I'm not talking about a package anymore;)
gnuplot fails to install because the PDFlib ports support file can not be
found.

Oddly, the package install failure, while it names gnuplot, doesn't
correctly identify the problem. On several systems on which I've tried to
do the maxima install, the error message identifies the problem as an I/O
error. Only when I attempt the ports-install does the problem show up
correctly, that gnuplot depends on PDFlib, which can not be found.

Obviously I run maxima without gnuplot graphics. I just had to learn the
work-around, not a big deal...

I look at it this way... For me, getting maxima up on FreeBSD has taught me
a lot about how FBSD is organized. But really, someone should take the time
to make this a solved problem. I can make gnuplot work, but I don't have
the authority to change the package content.

A similar problem exists with clusterit. Most of the commands work just
fine. But the semaphore control, (called "guards" in clusterit,) don't
lock. They simply don't. The program probably works fine in Linux. But
myself and a friend, who have about 85 years of programming experience
couldn't make it work. We scrapped it and wrote our own tool to do this.

I love FreeBSD and I continue to be very impressed with the quality of this
OS, not just the core, not just the documentation, not just the
applications, simply, it is truly a remarkable 'product'. The people who
have contributed to making this work should know that they have really
contributed.

And I use FBSD heavily -- in fact I and a couple of friends put together a
cluster of machines and we never saw any other OS as a good choice. These
two problems are all I have; So you see, I'm not unhappy.

What errors are you getting? Portsmon says that gnuplot builds fine on
all three branches:

maxima can not be built, because gnuplot fails on download

2009-10-20 Thread Henry Olyer
I have a fix for gnuplot;
How do I get it reviewed and perhaps incorporated into FreeBSD? Notice, I
am not saying gnuplot is bad, it just doesn't work, not since at least FBSD
6.1.  Earlier than that I don't know.

Did you really saturate your upload while testing your download speed in
WinXP? What you're describing is a common problem with how TCP works
especially on (but not limited to) assymetric connections. I use the
technique described by Daniel Hartmeier to circumvent it and can fully
utilize my upload and download simultaneously.

FreeBSD 7.1 as a router - poor download speed, but normal upload

2009-10-08 Thread .kkursor
Hello everybody! Please help me if you can.
I have a home server built on Gigabyte MiniITX motherboard with VIA C3
800MHz CPU and 512M RAM aboard. The server acts as a file server,
torrent downloader, router and mail and HTTP server.
I have a PPTP connection to my ISP through the integrated network card.
The network configuration is:

[0:04] kkur...@dot.kkursor.ru ~ # ifconfig
rl0: flags=8843 metric 0 mtu
1500
options=8
ether 00:19:cb:54:c6:15
inet 192.168.0.26 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.0.255
media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX )
status: active
rl1: flags=8843 metric 0 mtu
1500
options=8
ether 00:0f:ea:e2:cd:e0
inet 192.168.158.102 netmask 0xff00 broadcast 192.168.158.255
media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX )
status: active
lo0: flags=8049 metric 0 mtu 16384
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff00
tun0: flags=8051 metric 0 mtu 1500
inet 195.98.183.20 --> 172.30.96.1 netmask 0x
Opened by PID 73795
tun1: flags=8010 metric 0 mtu 1500

rl1 is integrated network card and rl0 is an additional PCI NIC which is
inserted into the only PCI slot on the motherboard. Connection to ISP is
done over rl1 using port pptp-client.
The problem is that there is very low download speed. My ISP provides
symmetric 4Mbps line, but download speed is poor - about 1 Mbps. Upload
speed is OK. I called ISP, they asked me to connect WinXP computer and
measure speed. It was normal, therefore there is an issue in my server.
If you could point me in the right direction, it would be wonderful.
Thank you very much for your work!

It's not a very efficient way to do it when the firewall is downstream
of the bottleneck - it's also difficult to make it specific to port
downloads.

I'd go with wget. It's also good at handling unreliable lines, I used
to use it when I was on dial-up

I have several FreeBSD machines located at different sites on very slow DSL
lines.

Is there a way that I can limit the bandwidth that fetch uses when it fetches
ports?

you may do this and 1000 times more things using IPFirewall

Don't expect too much, unless you want to help with the port.
