Tunnelling between Cisco and Freebsd
Hi all, I am running FreeBSD 9.2. The FreeBSD server in on a private IP, 192.168.1.6. I have only one public IP and that's on my verizon firewall configured to port forward to my FreeBSD server. I do not control the Cisco device, but here is the config that was sent to me: interface Tunnel10 ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.252 tunnel source GigabitEthernet0/0/2.1 (187.255.253.1) tunnel destination 107.48.4.129 Here is what I did on my FreeBSD: ifconfig gre0 create ifconfig gre0 10.1.1.2 10.1.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.252 ifconfig gre0 tunnel 192.168.1.6 187.255.253.1 Now I can ping 10.1.1.1 (his end) But when I try to add a static route for his subnets via his tunnel IP, it fails root@devsrvr:/root # route add -net 187.255.252.0/22<http://197.255.252.0/22>10.1.1.1 route: writing to routing socket: Network is unreachable add net 187.255.252.0 <http://197.255.252.0>: gateway 10.1.1.1: Network is unreachable Am I missing anything? This is probably only possible with a VM running the appropriate OS/2 version. This approach might also apply for running Novell NetWare EXE files. There are several VM systems available for FreeBSD, for example VMWare and VirtualBox. Regarding to driver issues you better stay with Microsoft or switch to Apple. At the moment there is a thread about Adobe Flash on this list. Neither Linux, nor FreeBSD tend to lose data, you even shouldn't lose data when using one of Microsoft's less good Windows versions. It's more likely that users have less good backup and archiving strategies. If you want to consume multimedia by the Internet, you likely need to install security updates and software to use stuff based on proprietary software. You could set up a text editor and never need to update or to reinstall something, but the Internet and consuming multimedia likely need updates from time to time. Start an adventure ;), nobody will give you a guarantee, "self-responsibility" is a catchword for free/libre and open source software. FreeBSD and Linux are similar operating systems, on both kernels more or less the same multimedia applications do run, but the more recent versions are provided by Linux and multimedia is better supported for Linux. I'm an Arch Linux user, it's similar to FreeBSD regarding to a port like system, however, for your needs IMO Debian Linux stable release might be the less risky choice. OTOH, why not simply testing FreeBSD? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Definitely no bluescreens in FreeBSD. The system will behave exactly as intended and won't "change its mind" a few days after installation. :-) > how much total ram and bit is my pc of amd athlon(tm) 64 x2 > dual core processor 4000+ 2.11 GHz 960 MB RAM? That's a 64 bit CPU, if I remember correctly. The AMD64 version should run fine. But as you are a little bit "low on RAM", you might consider using the i386 version (32 bit version) if you don't _need_ to run any 64 bit application. Especially as you've mentioned to run EXE files, this might be the better solution. >From what I've heared, wine (the "Windows" compatibility pack) runs better on i386 than on amd64. (I'm running it myself on the i386 OS on a 64 bit system without any problems.) > im always in internet watching live camers, what do you suggest > me to use os type? Is this via web? In this case, only the web browser matters. The typical candidates Firefox and Chrome should be fine. The OS does not matter here. If you need a proprietary program to watch the live cameras, often available only for an outdated "Windows" version, running it with (the mentioned) wine should work. (I've successfully tried something like that with a program to watch CCTV cameras via Internet.) > i like to save pictures and videos and never lost them,if you > think your os is gonna spoil and lost my all files then i dont > need it. Definitely no problem. But keep in mind: _You_ are responsible for creating backups! FreeBSD offers excellent tools to do so, no matter if you want to backup to disks, DVDs, the Cloud, or even to old-fashioned tape. Saving pictures from videos is no problem. There is mplayer and mencoder. It plays, records and converts _everything_. > i want stable os and never to reinstall or update That approach is unreasonable, I think. You _should_ update when security updates become available. It's in _your_ interest to do so, because effciency, security and usability improves from version to version. Luckily, FreeBSD has an easy way of updating the OS. It's _independent_ (!) from your installed applications and of course from your data. You can also decide to update your programs independently. However, a "install once, then keep using" scenario is easily possible with FreeBSD. (My home system has been installed in summer 2011 and worked _flawlessly_ since that point, never touch a running system.) I suggest you make yourself familiar with FreeBSD by using the resources from http://www.freebsd.org/ and you _might_ also want to check out PC-BSD (might be perfect for what you want) and VirtualBSD (easy way to try it out without installing it). -- Polytropon Magdeburg, Germany Happy FreeBSD user since 4.0 Andra moi ennepe, Mousa, ... _______ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

FreeBSD, Centos and ZFS
Hi, I would like to first say that by no means is this a "hey, why is my Mac faster then my PC" kind of email. I'm really hoping its an LSI driver issue. My hardware; 39 SATA drives via SAS expanders 2 SSD for ZIL 2 SSD for L2Arc 128GB ECC Ram Intel 2400SC Mobo 2 Xeon E5 Hexacore procs 2 LSI 9207 HBAs 1 LSI 9206 HBA I've 13 vdev RaidZ setup. Not a super system, but not a shabby one either. Used local (non network) IOzone and dd tests for some simple prelim testing just to gauge were I'm at with this bad boy. My ZFS tunables are the same BTW as I did some tweaks. My CentOS 6.4 box is a solid 20-30% faster then my FreeBSD 9.2 box. I've the graphs if any one is interested. But I'm hoping that some one has ran into this and that yes, there are some tweaks one can do to the LSI driver? I guess? Perhaps a sysctl value? I didn't want to vomit too much info in my first email about this so yes, its meant to be some what general with some decent info to get the dialogue started. Many thanks in advance for any insight. Linux is not an option as it does not return pre attributes on write replies which is important in our mostly NFS env. - aurf ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

It required flashing the adapter's BIOS from a Supermicro-supplied image and changing a jumper setting on the motherboard. Now as the adapter is in IT mode, it is a plain HBA the BIOS can boot from, and I have set up a gmirror on the SAS disks. After flashing the adapter BIOS, don't forget to enter its setup (Ctrl-C) and enable hotplugging of disks (called "Removable Media Support" in the menu, off by default). This can happen when the system is kept up-to-date using freebsd-update and the last SA did not touch the kernel, or when a new kernel has been installed but the system has not yet rebooted. http://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/head/bin/freebsd-version/ By the way, it will be /bin/freebsd-version as it has been relocated since the import into head. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Mike Brown: $ grep ^BRANCH /usr/src/sys/conf/newvers.sh BRANCH="RELEASE-p12" $ then again, I used freebsd-update and not /usr/src, but it makes sense what you said with kernel, so I guess I _AM_ on the latest -p12 and kernel is on -p9 as there was no changes after that to kernel. thank you. Bumping the > reported patchlevel isn't considered important enough to warrant building a > new kernel. That there's no kernel changes doesn't mean that uname -a info is not updated. If you update the system from p5 to current (p12), and it shows p9 instead p12 the first thing you think is that something on the system update went wrong, not that everything was fine except the update of the file that uname -a reads. If release info patch is p12, it must update the whole system to p12. If you update an app from 2.24.1 to 2.24.2 and doing 'app -v' shows 2.24.1 it means something went wrong, not that update only modified config files and not the binary. > > If your sources are in /usr/src, do this: > > grep -v # /usr/src/sys/conf/newvers.sh | head -4 No, uname -a should give the correct answer. I cannot use gmirror with these servers because a) if no MPT RAID is configured in BIOS setup, it cannot boot from HDD and b) if an MPT RAID *is* configured in BIOS setup, it occupies the last sector and prevents GEOM from working with these drives. As far as I know, the installer "bsdinstall" currently does not have this option included, but it already offers labeling the partitions as desired, so you could change the content of /etc/fstab manually to use labels instead of those device names. You could do this as a post-installation task while leaving the installer for the command shell and using an editor to do this. > if not how do I achieve this? > I use guided partitioning while installing - If I were to tweak in to the > source code which files or drivers I should be focusing on? I haven't looked into the source yet, but I assume you should concentrate on the component doing the partitioning tasks as explained here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/bsdinstall-partitioning.html > which drivers write the contents of fstab? The corresponding installer's component itself which creates the file according to the partitioning layout at installation time. I assume the required data will actually be written when the installer performs the _real_ installation steps (committing to the installation). > PS: any reason why we use device names in the place of gptid's as default > in fstab. Because it's not always wanted or intended. Next to GPT partitioning with GPT labels, UFS partitioning is possible (both MBR and dedicated style), which _may_ have cases where it needs to be applied. Maybe this can happen when you have a very strange combination of striping, mirroring, encryption and other things that require metadata here and there... The different methods have different capabilities regarding labels (UFS labels, UFSIDs to be mentioned). You can find out more about them here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/geom-glabel.html And read about the different methods of partitioning itself: http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/docs/html/disksetup.html Even "hardcoded" device names could also be required, though I can't imagine such a situation at the moment. :-) It highly depends on the toolset you're using (the bsdinstall program, gpart, fdisk & disklabel, newfs only). gptid's in fstab while installing FreeBSD using ISO
Hi All, How do I get gptid's as default in fstab while installing using FreeBSD iso file (Virtual, machine installation) ? Is this possible currently? if not how do I achieve this? I use guided partitioning while installing - If I were to tweak in to the source code which files or drivers I should be focusing on? which drivers write the contents of fstab? PS: any reason why we use device names in the place of gptid's as default in fstab. FreeBSD routing problem
Hi All, I am facing a routing issue for the Interoperability 1.5 topology. Please find the attachment of the exact topology map. As per test setup – Ø Configured REF-Router2 NOT to transmit Router Advertisement on Network1. But REF-Router2 is able to transmit Router Advertisement on Network2 with 2001:db8::3::/64 . Ø Configured a static route on TAR-RouterD ( ubuntu) Indicating REF-Router2’s Link local address as the next hop for the Network2 . Ø But Ref-Router Not able to routes between Network1 and Network2. Due to this ICMPv6 request from TAR-router to the global address of REF-Host2 is not working. There is no reply for this ICMPv6 request. Ø Same when I try to transmit ICMPv6 Echo request from REF-HOST2 to global address of TAR-HOST1( Prefix of TAR-RouterD), no ICMPv6 reply. Ø Within Network1 , nodes are able to communicate. But when I try to communicate Netwrok2 from Network1, it is not working. Could you please suggest tell me if I am missing something to route the traffic on REF-Router ? I suspect , as there is no Route Advertisement on Interface1 of the Ref-Router, it is not able to route the traffic between the interfaces. Please help me to find this solution. The improvements are welcome, but there have been a few troubling messages about kernel panics and VM issues on the various mailing lists. It's never clear until the release drops whether these are actual problems with the software or hardware defects in individual systems, so I am eager to hear how the new release is working for everyone. very frustrated at the moment... I've had some very strange issues crop up since upgrading from 9.1-RELEASE to 9.2-RELEASE. I'm using FreeBSD on a Xen HVM instance. My previous install was a system with a custom kernel (includes Xen HVM options) (entire base and kernel compiled with Clang 3.1 (base clang)). The system worked flawlessly. A "rinse and repeat" upgrade (build from source) with 9.2 is giving me some very strange issues: * Randomly when I start the VM, there is no network connectivity. I first noticed DHCP was timing out. The link appeared to be up on the xn0 interface but no data flow at all. Attempted manual interface configuration. Zilch, couldn't even get a response from the default gateway when pinging (both ipv4 and ipv6). A reboot of the machine and suddenly network connectivity is restored. Subsequently with no predictability, another reboot = no network again. No errors in dmesg or /var/log/messages. * /usr/ports/net/net-im/jabber (which appears not to have changed versions between my system upgrade) randomly aborts with signal 10 (bus error). * Programs that rely on mysql (installed percona 5.5 server) (such as jabber, powerdns etc) spew a bunch of errors saying they are unable to connect to the mysql server via /tmp/mysql.sock, after I log in and look, mysql is running just fine, and the programs that were complaining about mysql being unreachable are all operating correctly... (i have mysql set to start in /etc/rc.d before any of the programs that require it are started) -- never saw these issues in 9.1 * I run powerdns recursor for resolution of domain names. Despite having the recursor as being one of the first things in rc.conf to start (certainly before ntpdate), ntpdate decides to run before the recursor has started. This causes the lookup of the ntp server hostname to fail (using -b ip.ip.ip.ip as a flag to ntpdate rather than a host is a way to work around the issue). This was a clean build. I cleared up old libraries and rebuilt all my installed ports from scratch, I left no kruft lingering on the system to the best of my knowledge. Normally I would put something like the jabber server issue just being bad code that clang is happy to compile.. But the random network issue has the alarm bells ringing. Perhaps there is an issue with clang 3.3 generating faulty code? I havent had any kernel panics or machine freezes. This has to be a first for me with freebsd, I almost never ever have an issue after upgrading from RELEASE to RELEASE. I can probably rebuild it all again with the base gcc compiler, but clang is much much faster than the dinosaur gcc included in base and produces better code. Up in the air with this one. I might go back to 9.1, had none of these issues with it. /my 10 cents worth. I had several instances where the machines went unresponsive. They didn't panic, and they did respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL on the console, but they lost all networking and wouldn't do anything else. The only change was I enabled zfs prefetch which I previously had disabled for performance reasons. It never caused this issue on 9.1 when I had it enabled, though. The fix definitely was turning off prefetch again which doesn't bother me too much, but I can't use this environment to try to help debug it as it's important production data. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Contributing to FreeBSD
Hi all, I am an open source enthusiast and new to freeBSD community. I am an RHCE and have a reasonable knowledge of linux administration, database, Bash Scripting, and C/C++. I want to contribute to the community. I have gone through the FreeBSD handbook, and list of various projects under the community. However, I was unable to determine a suitable project for me to get started. So, I would really appreciate if you could help me find a project that would require my field of knowledge. Also, I wish to apply for GSOC-2014 and have checked the ideas page but found the similar problems as above. Also, if you could give me a link of resources and handbook for me to go through before starting to contribute. -- Regards :) Karan ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

There's a tutorial on bsdnow.tv The idea is that you'll use poudriere to intelligently manage the ports you want to roll binary packages. Then on 10 with the new `pkg' framework (formerly known as PkgNg) those binary packages are intelligently applied. As for self-contained packages... I believe you want what is known as PBIs. However, I think only PC-BSD offers PBIs -- I don't think they are offered in FreeBSD 10 by default (maybe there's a way though). I assume what you mean by "rollback with ZFS" is... "boot loader integration with BEs so you can boot to a previous snapshot". Look for that in 10.1. > 9. I recall device support being a large hurtle for me in the past. General questions regarding FreeBSD 10
General questions regarding FreeBSD 10: 1. Did virtualization containers (VPS) make it into FreeBSD 10? The documentation I’ve read implies that you can have nested containers, with little to no performance penalty, is this correct? How is networking handled inside these containers? 2. I'm assuming jails still exist in FreeBSD (I haven’t used BSD in a long time), how do they relate, or fit in, with VPS and Bhyve offerings? Is Xen Dom0 or KVM available on FreeBSD? 3. Can Bhyve be used with processors that don't support Extended Page Tables? For example, Xeon 5400 series processors? 4. How well does FreeBSD 10 run as a VMware vsphere , KVM, and/or Xen guest? 5: For Jails, VPS, and Bhyve, what is the footprint (i.e. memory overhead) for each implementation? 6. How stable is FreeBSD's ZFS implementation, relative to Solaris? What zpool version is in FreeBSD 10? Is LZ4 the default compression mode? 7. Is Clang and the build system setup to automatically target cpu instruction set? i.e. cc -target-cpu corei7-avx? Any performance improvements of targeted binaries? 8. Has ports management gotten any better, specifically upgrading ports? Can applications be self contained, like on the Mac, yet? Any work on rollback with ZFS? 9. I recall device support being a large hurtle for me in the past. How far behind is driver development relative to Linux, for server equipment? Has there been any community interest in porting FreeBSD (world) to Linux (kernel)? 10. How is the Java ecosystem on FreeBSD? Is LLVM specific to applications? I make the assumption that the VM in LLVM is referring to something like a JVM, for code abstraction. I haven’t used FreeBSD in ages. However, VPS, with ZFS, has me really excited; I don’t enjoy Solaris, and Enterprise Linux is still stuck in 2009, with kernel 2.6.32. Hello, I'm curious which of the currently available joysticks are supposed to work with FreeBSD. I'd like to use it for playing games/flightgear. Re: FreeBSD 8.4 Boot failure
Well, I wasn't able to continue troubleshooting. I took the opportunity that the server was already down to upgrade the BIOS. HP kindly does not provide any checks or warnings letting you know that you need to do a stepped upgrade, so the server is bricked. *sigh*. So this likely won't get investigated more. I'll be setting up a new server and attempting to import the zpools there. Thank for your advice anyhow! If this happens again on another server, I'll see about trying more things. Re: FreeBSD 8.4 Boot failure
Luckily, in this case, I had set a cron job long, long ago to do daily snapshots. So I have a snapshot from before the upgrade - There are indeed two different loaders. The newer one matches "zfs" when grepped, the older one does not... But, since it was working before, I restored the older loader and tried to boot again. No dice - it still sticks at that screen where all I see is "/" in the upper left. I also tried putting the older zfsboot and zfsloader back in place (with the old loader) to try and get a different error - still no dice. I'm still stuck wondering if that screen is from FreeBSD attempting to boot, or from the BIOS - but nothing changed for booting, as far as I know. I'll poke through the BIOS more tomorrow as well to see if some option got reset during a power-off. I'll get a more thorough look at what all changed in /boot tomorrow too, and get a list of all the files. It's almost 4am here and I have to work tomorrow :) (well, today I suppose). I'll also check to see if I can find anything about if zfs boot works differently in 8.4 vs 8.3 and older, as I may not have rebooted after the final "freebsd-update install" command (I *think* I did, but my memory gets fuzzy). Thanks for the input! I hope you have a good morning, and I'll let you know tomorrow/later today with anything new and interesting I find :) On Wed, Sep 25, 2013 at 1:45 AM, Terje Elde wrote: > On 25. sep. 2013, at 06:59, Tyler Sweet wrote: >> I tried reinstalling the boot blocks from both >> the fixit live filesystem and also mounting zroot and using the files >> there in case they were different. > > Disclaimer: I haven't gotten (enough) morning-coffee yet, but... > > Disclaimer 2: at times tracking how zfs-booting is done in the different > versions can be a bit tricky. Disclaimer: I haven't gotten (enough) morning-coffee yet, but... Disclaimer 2: at times tracking how zfs-booting is done in the different versions can be a bit tricky. This is a moving target, and I've lost track of the 8-branch. That said, assuming you have the correct bootcode (gptzfsboot), here's what might have happened: You installed 8.2, with a loader supporting zfs. Then you upgraded your /boot-stuffs, and bootcode on disk (correctly), but got left with a loader without zfs support. Then tried to upgrade the bootcode, but you're still left with a loader not supporting zfs. If I recall correctly, then the zfs-bootcode for 9+ will use "zfsloader" (supporting zfs and built by default), while earlier versions depend on "loader" with zfs support (built without by default). If that's the case, you could dump LOADER_ZFS_SUPPORT into /etc/make.conf and rebuild/reinstall it, or install /boot/loader from the fixit (if it has zfs support in 8.4). That's my first thought at least... If that doesn't fix it (remember backups of any files you replace or upgrade), it'd be interesting to see the output of: ls -l /boot/*loader /boot/*boot On the /boot you're using. Anything that didn't get built or installed? Also, did you snapshot your zfs before upgrading? Could be a working /boot/loader there, which might be the easiest way to get the system up, before rebuilding with ZFS-capable loader... if I'm right, which isn't a given (ref disclaimers). FreeBSD 8.4 Boot failure
Hello all, Not sure if this is the correct list. I've run into a problem with one of my servers where it no longer boots. It uses GPT and ZFS for root. Recently, I did an upgrade from 8.2 up to 8.4. That went fine, and I rebooted a few times after that to finish installing updates. During those reboots, I also updated ZFS to the most recent version to take advantage of dedupe and the new compression algorithm. The server has two zpools, zroot which has the system on it, and data, which has everything else (except /usr/home, which is on zroot). I followed this guide a long, long time ago: https://wiki.freebsd.org/RootOnZFS/GPTZFSBoot/RAIDZ1 While deleting several large files, the system stopped responding to SSH/HTTP/everything except ping. Thinking it was just taking a long time to finish, I let it sit for about a day. When it didn't recover, I had to do a hard power-off, as it wasn't accepting key strokes at the console. When it boots back up, it gets past POST and then goes to a black screen with just a spinner in the upper left-hand corner. No text, no logo, nothing else. The spinner used to spin around a few times, now it does nothing. I've managed to get boot zpools loaded up in the fixit console, they don't show any errors. I tried reinstalling the boot blocks from both the fixit live filesystem and also mounting zroot and using the files there in case they were different. Neither one seems to change anything. I've let it sit at the (mostly) blank screen for two hours with no change. I'm at the end of my wits, and haven't been able to find any information as to what could be causing this. There are no error messages at the console, and the only output is that frozen spinner. >From what I remember, I didn't change anything on the zroot zpool during the upgrade, only the data zpool to enable the new compression and dedupe on a couple file systems where they would be useful. I've checked /boot/loader.conf and /etc/fstab, and neither one has changed since it was last working. My only though is if the zroot zpool was borked somehow, but it still loads up without any issue in the fixit console (Though I had to use the -f flag on both zpools when I first loaded them, as they were "still in use" from when the server crashed). All the disks appear to be fine. The server still boots from USB and CD without throwing any errors. Re: [FreeBSD-Announce] vBSDcon Registrations Only Open For 30 More Days!
Hi, Good points in Brett & Michael's posts, but for brevity not copied. Best avoid having code written & reviewed just in USA as it would get less trust globaly, NSA is a known alien mega spy, & USA even coerces non USA citizens outside USA, eg http://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/aug/01/gary-mckinnon-extradition-nightmare http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/ukhomeoffice-stop-the-extradition-of-richard-o-dwyer-to-the-usa-saverichard Best encourage FreeBSD sources to be used & suspiciously reviewed by a variety of programmers & mathematicians/ cryptologists from different backgrounds & countries; Max chance of loophole reporting with more people from a spectrum of countries with rival mutualy distrusting governments from such as eg { Britain, China, France, Germany, Israel, North Korea, Russia, Syria, USA } etc. Presumably nearly all of us are cluless on crypto. math. so meantime encourage involvement of citizens of at least a few different dis-trusting countries. Kernels perhaps have less reviewers than cross-OS S/W eg GPG & Open-SSH etc, so kernels might be target of choice of suborners ? Maybe FreeBSD Foundation could set up a cheap bonus scheme for security bugs exposed/ fixed - Special edition coffee mugs, non purchasable, sent only as a reward, posted globaly free. Any contribution from a company like Verisign needs to be carefully scrutinized. I also don't think it wise to allow them to take a leadership role of any type. All: It's good to see corporate support of BSD, but at the same time I have mixed feelings about certain corporations -- Verisign among them -- hosting BSD-related conferences or becoming involved in the development of BSD-based operating systems. Why? Because Verisign, based in Reston, Virginia (the city next door to Vienna, VA, home of the NSA), has strong ties to this shadowy agency. The NSA, in turn -- as reported in documents recently leaked by Edward Snowden -- has a very strong interest in weakening the security of cryptographic algorithms, cryptographic software, and operating systems. We may want to look this gift horse very carefully in the mouth, or at least monitor very closely "contributions" of code that might introduce backdoors or weaknesses. --Brett Glass _______ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Yes, you remember correctly, safe mode disable the ACPI support automatically. I think it's a problem in the ACPI system because when I disable ACPI, it boot successfully even without choosing safe mode. But what that is strange here, is that Microsoft Windows and Linux (Debian) are able to boot with ACPI enabled. furthermore, some days ago FreeBSD itself succeeded to boot also with ACPI support enabled. As for the error messages, there's not a particular error message. it simply stuck during the initialization of the PCI bus. The problem may also be that USB devices take a long time to settle. I suggest these in your /boot/loader.conf hint.acpi.0.disabled="1" kern.cam.boot_delay="1" kern.cam.scsi_delay="2000" The CAM boot delay is needed for USB booting on some of my machines, esp. Soekris boxes. 10 seconds is safe. - M ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

I'm currently looking at "man mount" on a FreeBSD 8.2 system and the following paragraph is readable: -u The -u flag indicates that the status of an already mounted file system should be changed. Any of the options discussed above (the -o option) may be changed; also a file system can be changed from read-only to read-write or vice versa. An attempt to change from read-write to read-only will fail if any files on the file system are currently open for writing unless the -f flag is also specified. The set of options is determined by applying the options specified in the argument to -o and finally applying the -r or -w option. The -u flag is referenced in other sections of the manpage. -- Polytropon Magdeburg, Germany Happy FreeBSD user since 4.0 Andra moi ennepe, Mousa, ... ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

Thanks for replying, Steve. As for your question, I mean if it is possible for example to write a file to the filesystem and that the file will not be deleted on the next boot. actually, I didn't succeed to write a file to the filesystem because it is automatically mounted as readonly filesystem, so my question implies also how to mount it also with write access during the boot process.
