Ok. freeciv-gtk2 in 2.4.2 now starts with no problems (well besides taking a
very long time), but freeciv-gtk3 in 2.4.2 still has (what appears to be) the
same problem.

OP here with another crash - stderr has the same assertion failure. Now it
happened while leaving city with a freshly created Caravan (Keyboard 'G' +
mouseclick). Attaching .RPT and just before it happened - save game.

There is some support to the idea that this bug has gone away with the
updating of the gtk library.
In the two weeks after my last post I had 6 further crashes of this sort with
freeciv 2.3.4
In two weeks playing with 2.3.5 I had no crashes.
