Follow-up Comment #20, bug #21272 (project freeciv): There is some support to the idea that this bug has gone away with the updating of the gtk library. In the two weeks after my last post I had 6 further crashes of this sort with freeciv 2.3.4 In two weeks playing with 2.3.5 I had no crashes.
