No matter which menu choice I make (1, 2, or 3) it does something similar. It won't let me select option 4 from the menu (4 - Load FreeDOS without drivers) I have a group where I posted some screen shots of my attempts to get FreeDOS to boot of the virtual hard drive. I'm guessing it's something simple, like running the sys command manually, but I hate to guess at such things. I'm using Virtual PC to protect my hard drive from potential corruption, and I pray a lot to the software gods that they won't let me down. Understand FreeDOS thread at my group with some nice screen shots I'm a professional programmer, with an interest in operating systems, and I am very interested in getting FreeDOS to run on Virtual PC or a similar virtual environment, for use in O/S research on an amateur basis. I'm working on my own O/S named DORIS, and I'm currently working in GNAT Ada, after trying Small-C and assembler. I would appreciate any help in getting this baby (FreeDOS) running! I can boot from the CD just fine and it comes up and runs fine under Windows XP Pro/SP2 with all the latest updates. I haven't tried FreeDOS on any other PCs, real or virtual, at least not yet. I'm hoping you have a quick fix. Thanks in advance for your kind attention and consideration, and please let me know if I'm doing something wrong or if it's a genuine problem that needs or needed to be reported. Danke schön! [Freedos-user] Perhaps an explanation is in order (of what's happening)
Eric I would like to apologize for the tone of the previous post of mine in advance!! I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings, but I was pretty upset earlier today at not being able to get FreeDOS to boot after numerous attempts. I had tried it earlier without success, and this time I was DETERMINED to get it to work. To date I've only been able to get it to boot off the Live CD, or whatever it's called. I also have a dual boot X-server problem with Ubuntu Linux, but not with XP Pro, so the problems I am having could potentially be related to the new graphics card. I do NOT want to revert back to the onboard Nvidia graphics just to test that theory. I'm trying to use Microsoft Virtual PC as a testbed. I was a little upset when I posted those screen shots, but I wasn't really trying to be mean, just highlighting some problems that caused me many hours of heartache and grief. I wonder if it's ME, or my AMD machine, or my Nvidia 6100 graphics on my WinFast motherboard, or my new ATI Radeon X1300 PCI Express 16 card (using both output ports to dual monitors), or just what could be causing FreeDOS not to boot on my machine. Are there known problems with Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 Edition which would cause boot failures? Is it the dual boot configuration causing the problem? Could it be that? Or is it something about my hard drive (Western Digital 250 GB Sata-2 drive)? My operating system (XP Pro/SP2)? I didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but I did want to get to the bottom of the problem as quickly as possible. Sorry if I said some harsh things in that thread on my O/S group. It's really a hobby and something I very much enjoy. I have a lot of software experience and I am used to things crashing and I can usually figure out why or find someone who can help! I hope you weren't offended by any of my comments. That was not my intention, to be critical. I rather would like some answers to questions that I have trouble finding anyone to answer. Like the one I have about the boot menu. It has 4 options and will only allow me to select the 1st 3 of the 4, and all 3 of the first 3 options crash in a different way, all probably related to EMM386, unable to continue, Please reboot=F7F Illegal Instruction occurred CS=CF6E IP=5065 SS=9DA2 SP=2134 DS=E000 ES=6F6E etc Sound familiar? Hi, I don't have a solution to this problem, but I would just like to say that I have a similar problem, maybe I can help by providing the details of mine. I can get FreeDOS to boot (after many hours spent failing to get Windows' boot manager to work with FreeDOS), but only on option 3 (the difference being that 1 and 2 run emm386.exe). I get a slightly different message, although I have had several of those opcode messages while running FreeDOS. MORE$driver by Eric Auer 2003 loaded. Use: ... I am no expert and I do not know what emm386.exe does, apart from it is something to do with memory. What I do know is that when I boot FreeDOS on option 3, I can run most (well, all that I have tried) programs that came in the package, however, every single CD-bound DOS install-app I have tried to run also hangs indefinitely. On a probably related note, I can get the FreeDOS installation to complete, but the configuration only completes if I don't install the network driver(s), this also makes the computer hang. Hi all, only on option 3 [works] (the difference being that 1 and 2 run emm386.exe). I get a slightly different message, although I have had several of those opcode messages while running FreeDOS. Then you should try www.japheth.de JEMM386 and maybe some manual tuning for the options. Try for example X=e000-efff X=test and maybe some options which are recommended in the JEMM386 readme. MORE$driver by Eric Auer 2003 loaded. Use: ... MORE$ Kernel: allocated 41 Diskbuffers = 21812 Bytes in HMA The program then hangs indefinitely That is very interesting. It means that the hang happens at the very moment when the kernel starts to use the HMA. It probably means that your A20 control is causing troubles. Try some of the /METHOD:... options for HIMEM, see HIMEM /?. You can also make option 4, no drivers, work by adding a (fd)config sys line 4?ECHO no drivers. You can also skip loading drivers by pressing F8 when DOS boots, it will then ask you for each driver whether you want to load it. FreeDOS on option 3, I can run most programs that came in the package, however, every single CD-bound DOS install-app I have tried to run also hangs indefinitely. Then try to update SHSUCDX: www.geocities.com/jadoxa/shsucdx/ The version on our CDROM has the bug that the 8086 compatible SHSUCDX can crash when the drive is not ready / no disk in drive. On a probably related note, I can get the FreeDOS installation to complete, but [...] only completes if I don't install the network driver(s) Interesting. I personally think that there should be an easy way to select install everything which does not need USB or network during or after install. Would also make the install a lot faster, and one can still add network related stuff later. Eric - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. The most important setting in Jemm386 concerning MS VPC might be NOINVLPG. Indeed, this option was added just because of this emulator, which seems to have problems emulating the cpu's TLB correctly. With this option on Norbert Remmel got MS VCP, FD and Jemm386 to work finally. Generally, since the emulators apparently aren't fully reliable, it might be a good idea to first boot FD without Himem/Emm386 and then advance step by step. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Japheth schreef: Generally, since the emulators apparently aren't fully reliable, it might be a good idea to first boot FD without Himem/Emm386 and then advance step by step. In case of troubleshooting, it's smart to start in Safe Mode (F5) or SingleStepping (F8) modes and see which line of code is the culprit. if pressing F5, please set the path to your FreeDOS directory manually, and then use EDIT to comment out the trouble causing line of code. As for boot process hanging after showing the buffers in HMA line, DOS=HIGH or SHELLHIGH might be the trouble as I've seen this problem earlier in VMware. A sample debugging script would be (upon F5): SET PATH=C:\FREEDOS\BIN EDIT C:\FDCONFIG.SYS (or EDIT C:\CONFIG.SYS) EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT (or EDIT C:\FREEDOS\FDAUTO.BAT) By default the FreeDOS 1.0 installs a lot of drivers, and apparently they not all work out of the box on every single machine. My own use of FreeDOS is quite simple these days by mounting an ISO once kernel and shell have been loaded: DEVICE=HIMEM.EXE DOS=HIGH SHSURD /F:FDBOOTCD.ISO SHSUCDX /D:SHSU-CDH,X SET PATH=C:\;C:;X:\FREEDOS\SETUP\BIN - Take Surveys. For some programs to work you have to add the NOVME option, too. Microsoft promised to implement these opcodes in their 2007 release, but unfortunately they didn't. I will write another complaint for their 2008 release. ;-) Norbert. - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. [Freedos-user] ANNOUNCE: XGREP version 1.03
Hello! Robert Nordier kindly agreed to add his fast UNIX-like `grep' clone including source code to the FreeDOS project. Excerpt from his mail: *** I've replaced the license with one previously used for some of my BSD work (it is essentially the old 386BSD license). Even this isn't all that explicit about granting the right to make changes, but in practice this right has always been assumed (see, for example, src/sys/boot/i386/btx/ in the FreeBSD source tree). *** I just put everything to the right directory, added a `build.bat' for Arrowsoft Assembler + WarpLink, wrote a short LSM file, and made the distribution packages. see http://www.freedos.org/cgi-bin/freedos-lsm.cgi?q=fa=util/xgrep.lsm Robert Riebisch -- BTTR Software http://www.bttr-software.de/ - Take Surveys.
