[Freedos-user] OpenGEM, batch files and application icons

2007-09-13 Thread Christian Simonyi
Hi all,

I gave a test run for FreeDOS 1.0 (my main system is linux and use
occasionally DR-DOS-7.0.3 + Breadbox Ensemble) and also installed
OpenGEM5. I find GEM is appropriate/acceptable, but yet I could not
figure out:

- how to ran batch files from the GEM desktop (they are opened by default)

- how to add application starting icons to a folder/desktop (it is not
very nice to fumble between system files when starting an
application).

Remarks (do not need to be answered)
- FreeDOS installer is hanging if WATTCP configuration stops for any reason.
- Hungarian keyboard is defunct (setting was made by the installer but
not working)
- xfdisk offers FAT32 but DEFRAG says its not supported (not even the
new version of defrag)

Thank you for your reply in advance!

Best regards,

Christian Simonyi

Re: [Freedos-user] OpenGEM, batch files and application icons

2007-09-13 Thread Eric Auer

Hi Christian,

 - FreeDOS installer is hanging if WATTCP
 configuration stops for any reason.

Yeah I would recommend to install without network, see:
http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?n=FdDocEn.FdInstall
You can find a list of internet-using packages here:
http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?n=FdDocEn.FdDependencies

 - Hungarian keyboard is defunct (setting was made by the installer but
 not working)

You can try mkeyb and keyb...

 - xfdisk offers FAT32 but DEFRAG says its not supported (not even the
 new version of defrag)

http://users.telenet.be/imre/FreeDOS/?M=D you mean?

Most other things should support fat32. Chkdsk does not, but you
can use dosfsck instead... Mirror / unformat / undelete do not
support fat32 either, but format (!) has built-in mirror and
(limited) unformat functions which do support fat32.

Eric

[Freedos-user] Fwd: OpenGEM, batch files and application icons

2007-09-13 Thread Christian Simonyi
Hi Eric,

thank you for your efforts, but you answered my remarks which I solely
mentioned requesing not to be asnwered.

*** My question concerned the integration / use of OpenGEM.***

In regard to your reply: I hacked the system in several ways testing
it for a couple of days. Not a really big deal to me, I made my remark
solely to note that an unmodified installation should work out of the
box (bevore one hacks it away) pre it's called 'stable'.

The installation procedure of FreeDOS is near to be ready, but it is not.
For ex.:
By an unformatted partition the installer offers XFDISK, which agains
offers FAT32 file system by **DEFAULT**. The defrag included in the
1.0 disc can not handle this.
You can set language/keyboard during the installation but it's useless
if it has no effect.
Setting the network other than DHCP fails in every case hanging the
installer (for ex: If one choses to supply with the network
information by replies than the 'nameserver' is not asked by the
installer and than the installer fails/hangs because the nameserver is
unknown etc. etc.)

I look forward a bugfix release let's say version 1.1

Just mention (don't need a reply):
I would like to see an option by the installation for the directory
layout which would give the users more freedom organizing their system
(not everyone likes the throw everything in one box layout), for
ex.: I use the following directory layout:

C:\HOME # aka Documents and Settings
C:\PROGRAMS # here are the additional applications
C:\PROGRAMS\A1
C:\PROGRAMS\A2
C:\PROGRAMS\An
C:\SYSTEM\ # yes, this is the system
C:\SYSTEM\DRIVERS\ # and it's drivers
C:\SYSTEM\DRIVERS\NET
C:\SYSTEM\DRIVERS\AUDIO
C:\SYSTEM\DRIVERS\VIDEO
C:\TMP # temprorary files

Again: does anyone know how is it possible to run BAT file from the
OpenGEM desktop? (they are opened by default.)
Further: does someone know whether it is possibe to make icons of
native DOS applications on the GEM Desktop.
I ask because I was unable to find an appropriate documentation, sorry.

Cheers,

Christian Simonyi

Sophism, does not help; either me or anyone.

I better leave from here

Eric has a habit of bringing public discussions to smaller private
email, nevermind that :)
You're most welcome to stay on the FreeDOS list. Eric was right though
about having to look up the documentation of OpenGEM (creating icons for
files, running batch file scripts directly) on its own website:
http://gem.shaneland.co.uk/
Essentially, OpenGEM is an add-on to any DOS, and the only reason it's
included in a bigger FreeDOS release is due to its licensing terms which
allow redistribution.

As for the more than 1 year old FreeDOS distribution, we know it tends
to hang on trying to get internet access. Somehow there's issues with
DHCP then (trying to get an internet/network address assigned
automatically from a router or other server). That will be changed
sometime. For now, people are working on updating programs rather than
the installation scripts.

Thanks for your mail to this list, and goodluck finding a solution to
make your graphical user interface a bit more usable.

Bernd

Re: [Freedos-user] Freedos OpenGEM, batch files and application icons

2007-09-13 Thread Christian Simonyi
Hi Shane,

2007/9/13, Shane Martin Coughlan [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

You mean they are treated as text by default. Shane should know.

If you open /GEMAPPS/GEMSYS/DESKTOP.INI and edit this line:
 #G082A DESKTOP.APP@ *.TXT,*.INF,*.NFO,*.BAT,*.CFG@
 to make it say:
 #G082A DESKTOP.APP@ *.TXT,*.INF,*.NFO,*.CFG@

This should mean that GEM will try to run the BAT file instead of
opening it as a text file.

Further: does someone know whether it is possibe to make icons
of native DOS applications on the GEM Desktop.

Well, it's possible to create icons. This is something Jim asked me
too, and I didn't get around to replying yet.

There is an icon editor on this page:
 http://www.seasip.info/Gem/gengem.html

 It's called (surprisingly enough) EDICON.

Thanks a lot!

That solves my question.

Probably my fault, but I did not find users guide on your site (except
the faq). It would be nice to have one in the \DOC directory after
installation.

Would it be possible (is there anyone who have time to do this) to
take a User Guide of a previous version of GEM as 'base' and rewrite
it to be up-to date (I did not even find an earlier doc).

Best regards,

Christian Simonyi

I'm really sorry. We don't have enough documentation right now.

I think the main problem is time. For me, I'm working about 10 hours
per day in my job. I just don't have enough time to get things done.

For instance, OpenGEM 7 is ready for release...just about. But I don't
have time to double-check everything, fix any last bugs and release it.

:(
