Re: [Freedos-user] How can I resume an unfinished FreeDOS installation?

2008-05-29 Thread Eric Auer

Hi!

To avoid such a freeze while installing FreeDOS 1.0, try this:

I would recommend to install without network, see:
 http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?n=FdDocEn.FdInstall
You can find a list of internet-using packages here:
 http://fd-doc.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php?n=FdDocEn.FdDependencies
 ...

Installing again will skip some of the steps you
already did, but you will still have to type all
configuration and package selection choices again.
Note that only fdfullcd freezes, not fdbasecd :-).

I've started to install FreeDOS, it's installed everything, then the
configuration part began as expected. The machine freezed at
Configuring through DHCP, and I needed to restart it. Now how can I
resume the configuration procedure, without starting the installation
 again from the start?

I'm installing FreeDOS in a VMware virtual machine, but I don't think
 it matters regarding this question.

That is a good question... Maybe Blair, Bernd or Mateusz
know an answer? I really recommend that FreeDOS 1.1 will
not try to use the internet during INITIAL install. You
can always add internet related packages later with FDPKG
or FDUPDATE. That gives you a working DOS right away and
some time to figure out the network configuration at any
later point when you want to download further packages.

Given that the FDUPDATE collection - which would be the
main source for updated packages for making FreeDOS 1.1
in the first place - does not have all BASE updates yet,
I assume that FreeDOS 1.1 will be base only in the first
version anyway. This has the good side effect that none
of the internet related packages will be on the 1.1 ISO.

Everybody who sees a missing BASE package in the FDUPDATE
collection can help us to reach 1.1 by telling the list
or Mateusz about the missing update or, even better, by
making a fresh package for our collection himself :-).

You can find the collection here:
 http://mateusz.viste.free.fr/fdupdate/
A list of current version numbers is here and here:
 www.freedos.org/cgi-bin/lsm.cgi?mode=dirdir=base
 http://rugxulo.googlepages.com/fdpkgnew.txt
the second page might be more up to date - let me know
if you find a file for which freedos.org is outdated.

Thanks :-)

Eric

[Freedos-user] Packet Driver install problem - New to Freedos

2008-05-29 Thread Jacob W Tennant
I just did a full clean install of Freedos and have only one small problem
so far.

When I tried to use the networking.internet capabilities it seems that I
didn't get a packet driver for my ehternet card installed correctly or
something

When installing I noticed that when it tried to Configuring thru DHCP it
failed everytime.

My system is on a old eMachine computer which I have no idea what kind of
ethernet card I have but Windows and Ubuntu used it OK. I am also on a home
network with a router.

Any help would be great...

Jacob Tennant - K8JWT

PS: Has anyone figured out how to do WiFi under Freedos?

Re: [Freedos-user] How can I resume an unfinished FreeDOS installation?

2008-05-29 Thread Michael Reichenbach
Good you are asking this. I wanted to ask this to but I have forgotten.

The problem is that the selection dialog does not wait long enough and I
find a standard wait time is a bad thing so or so. The setup should wait
until the user answers.

Or even better... Ask all questions at start and then install without
more asking.

Re: [Freedos-user] Fresh XCOPY bugs

2008-05-29 Thread John Hupp
My problems with XCOPY are not as they first seemed.

Windows renders the directories of interest on the CD as D:\F-PROT and
D:\GAMES\QUEEN.SAV, but FreeDOS (at least the current version) renders them
as F_PROT and QUEEN_SA. It is some comfort to find that MS-DOS 6.22 does
the same.

So file and directory name support seem to be involved, but it's not clear
that it is XCOPY that is misbehaving. I see that I can MOVE C:\F_PROT
C:\F-PROT, so the hypen is supported there.

I want to reinstall those two programs from scratch to see afresh how
folders and files are named. It also occurs to me that the CD file system
may well be a factor.

More on this when I can get to it.

Subject: [Freedos-user] Fresh XCOPY bugs

I'm using XCOPY for a selective restore CD, and for most directories it
works fine, but I have identified a couple cases where it fails due to the
 directory name.

 Where D: is the CD:

 Case 1:
 ---
 XCOPY /E /V /Y /I D:\GAMES\F-PROT C:\GAMES\F-PROT

First of all, XCOPY asks Does F-PROT specify a file name or directory
 name
on the target? With the /I switch, it is not supposed to ask me that
question, and it does not ask for copies of other directories.

Worse, though it does create C:\GAMES\F-PROT, it does not copy any of the
contents of the F-PROT directory. Instead, it begins copying into F-PROT
other GAMES sub-directories: GAMES\ABUSE gets copied to
 GAMES\F-PROT\ABUSE,
 GAMES\DOOM to GAMES\F-PROT\DOOM, etc.

 Case 2:
 ---
 XCOPY D:\GAMES\F-PROT C:\GAMES\F-PROT

Again it asks File or Directory, and that is OK without the /I switch
 here.
But after I answer Directory, XCOPY copy responds with:
 File not found - F-PROT
 0 file(s) copied

 Case 3:
 ---
 XCOPY D:\GAMES\QUEEN.SAV C:\GAMES\QUEEN.SAV

The response is similar to Case 1, except that XCOPY does not ask File or
Directory. Instead, it copies none of the F-PROT contents but immediately
begins copying other GAMES sub-directories into GAMES\F-PROT (as in Case
 1).

 Case 4:
 ---
 XCOPY D:\GAMES\QUEEN.SAV C:\GAMES\QUEEN.SAV

The response is exactly the same as for Case 2.

Re: [Freedos-user] LNE100TX driver found,making progress...

2008-05-29 Thread Ulrich Hansen
Hi Jacob,

great you found a packet driver for your NIC! I also found it at:
http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2childpagename=US%2FLayoutcid=1166859880202packedargs=sku%3D1115416833483pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapperlid=8020233483B03displaypage=download

Driver version 5 seems to be OK. I assume you saved the file from the
zip-directory pktdrv to your directory C:\NET.

Now add a line to your autoexec.bat
LH C:\NET\LNE100TX.COM 0x60

If highloading the driver is not possible, a simple
C:\NET\LNE100TX.COM 0x60
might do as well.

Now for instance download the latest Arachne webbrowser from this
location:
http://www.glennmcc.org/a193gpl/

Run the install file. Let arachne detect your driver. Feed the browser
information about your network (IPs, gateway, dns etc.)

Run Arachne. Have fun!
Uli
