Yes, but it will not be 100% compatible.  Graphics and sound are big
issues.  The graphics card will likely not support int10h video BIOS so
that will be needed as well.  Modern sound cards are an issue in
themselves, with most DOS programs lacking support.  USB and mice/keyboard
support is another problem.  A non-motherboard provided CSM lacks access to
SMM so can't use some tricks to hide compatibility issues.

I don't have links handy but there are a couple projects (not directly
FreeDOS ones) working on this.

Having the kernel boot on UEFI systems is not overly difficult, but
currently entirely useless as only pure DOS programs that don't talk to
BIOS would work.  No video mode changes, scrolling, output, etc even for
text mode, no hard drive int 13h access for disk or file access.  Probably
no keyboard use either as it is likely a USB device.  As for booting off
GPT disks instead of MBR partitioned ones on BIOS based systems, that is in
the works.

So yes there is work in the pipeline, but nothing coming soon or guaranteed

I won't comment on the geopolitics you mentioned, but I've also heard
that PC manufacturers bundle FreeDOS on systems for this reason. I
understand that it had something to do with Windows OEM license
agreements with Microsoft, that Ballmer would cut vendors a better
deal if they didn't offer "no OS" systems, and preferred that vendors
didn't pre-install Linux either. And with FreeDOS, support was easier
(customers might call for help with Linux, where they probably won't
with FreeDOS).

I've heard of modern systems shipping with FreeDOS before: around 2012, 
apparently half of all laptops in Russia shipped with FreeDOS; the acquaintance 
that told me this said that it was basically a way of selling a PC without an 
operating system while still selling something that would boot (so that the 
technophobes don't come back complaining that you've sold them a brick), though 
I'd think Ubuntu would do that job just as well, in terms of licensing cost. 
Desktops in Russia, apparently, are almost exclusively built from parts by the 
owner or by a hired entrepreneur.

I imagine shopping in the US vs. abroad has something to do with it: Russia is 
outright hostile to the US (and thus US companies), and the EU tends to do 
better than the US at restraining the kind of anticompetitive deals with 
manufacturers that MS gained infamy for cutting back in the 90's. So I'd 
imagine that companies like HP might well find themselves constrained by local 
law to offer a "no OS" (i.e. FreeDOS) option in those markets.

So if MS is still cutting such deals, this is about what I'd expect to see: 
manufacturers offering FreeDOS abroad and not in the US. OTOH, my understanding 
is that most of MS's income these days is from enterprise volume licensing and 
support, and relatively little from per-machine licensing or the consumer 
market in general, so they don't have to have reformed any, morally speaking, 
for the reptuational risks of such deals to outweigh the rewards.

If you want to have FreeDOS look for NDCONFIG.SYS, you will need to edit
the FreeDOS kernel source code and recompile. It does not look for
NDCONFIG.SYS on its own.

You can use either FDCONFIG.SYS or CONFIG.SYS with FreeDOS. Nothing special is 
needed. You can just rename FDCONFIG.SYS so the kernel will then look for 
CONFIG.SYS. 

However, there is an advantage to using FDCONFIG instead. 

Older commercial programs that have their own installers and modify the config 
file, were generally bad at making good changes to the CONFIG.SYS and 
AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Often duplicating or creating conflicting settings. 
Sometimes even reducing things like FILES=80 to FILES=40. 

This was even an issue sometimes when installing programs created circa MS-DOS 
3 onto later versions of MS-DOS like 6.2 or installing into PC-DOS. 

Also, there are also some differences when it comes to what drivers and their 
settings get used by FreeDOS. 

Using FDCONFIG and FDAUTO provides an relatively easy way to use those old 
installers and not break your system configuration. Then afterwards, you can 
manually include any needed changes.

Well, I have been foolin around with the files.  Here is what I have done
so far and what I haven’t done, but would like to:

I copied FDAUTO.BAT and FDCONFIG.SYS to NDAUTO.BAT and NDCONFIG.SYS

Done:
I edited ndauto.bat how I liked it leavin fdauto.bat alone in case of a
problem.  As mentioned I edited the link for fdauto.bat to the new filename
in both the new ndauto.bat and fdconfig.sys files at the bottom.

Sillyness:
I was wonderin bout renamin FDCONFIG.SYS to NDCONFIG.SYS.

Just cause I like to fiddle around I have it startin up sayin (in the
Welcome.bat under fdos\bin) welcome to NorbyDOS then later Based on *:
(Website link).*

*I know this is all just silly and unecessary, but I like to do stuff like
that bein unique.*

BTW, when replying to a list email, please also delete any unneeded extra
lines of text from the "reply" part of your message. That helps focus your
email message, and makes it easier for others to reply to you.

You replied to a digest email message to ask a new question, and you
changed the Subject of the new email (thanks!) but you didn't need the
other "reply" part of the digest message.

Hi Daniel

Yes you can. FreeDOS will look for FDCONFIG.SYS first by default. If the
FreeDOS kernel cannot find FDCONFIG.SYS, it then looks for CONFIG.SYS. So
you can rename your FDCONFIG.SYS file to CONFIG.SYS and that will be fine.

We look for FDCONFIG.SYS first because that makes it easier for folks to
dual boot a computer with FreeDOS and MS-DOS. Since MS-DOS only looks for
CONFIG.SYS, users can effectively have one config file for FreeDOS and
another config file for MS-DOS, on the same disk.

I'll add that you can also rename FDAUTO.BAT to AUTOEXEC.BAT *but you'll
need to change all the references in your FDCONFIG.SYS/CONFIG.SYS file.
You'll find the references on the SHELL lines.*

possible to create a new config file and use that.  For instance rename
fdconfig.sys to the MSDOS config.sys?
