[Freedos-user] One use case for FreeDos

2024-01-27 Thread Dan Schmidt via Freedos-user
Now, that's an interesting use for a Dos/FreeDos retro computer:

https://www.theverge.com/2014/5/14/5716232/george-r-r-martin-uses-dos-wordstar-to-write

How many computers destined for the landfill still have perfectly good
screens and keyboards? (Recalling those heavy, grey, indestructible PS2
keyboards where the keys snapped back up with a vigour that seemed to sent
your fingers flying on to the next character) Now, I might have gone with
WordPerfect 6 instead of WordStar 4, but the idea itself is solid: A
computer that you just use for writing, sans distractions. No YouTube, no
Email, no Facebook - you sit - you write. I mean, it's hard to argue it
didn't work well for this guy!

2023-06-03 Thread Dan Schmidt

Unfortunately, it did not seem to work anymore last time I tried it. It
may be possible to enable some legacy ciphers on the ssh server to make it
work. Personally, I telnet to another PC and and ssh from there.

Thanks all for your comments, I'm aware of the ssh2dos project and
suggested noise.sys to help with security.

I'm glad to hear Unicode in mTCP Telnet is on the table and would like to
thank Mike for his continued work. (PC fished from trash + FreeDos + mTCP
Telnet = quick, cheap terminal for lab use)

Re: [Freedos-user] Video complains that DOS should not be mantained

2022-01-12 Thread Dan Schmidt
Good to know, it used to be unstable.

Well, I shall be quite darned. A post on the Lynx forum (strange place for
it) says Arachne and DosLynx have returned from the dead. Somebody should
keep a list somewhere of currently maintained DOS browsers.

http://macall.net/info.htm
http://www.bttr-software.de/forum/forum_entry.php?id=18569

In the unlikely case that somebody stumbles upon this threat looking for
advice, my two cents follow:
If you only try one, try Links. That said, although it's harder to set up
(infernal options that don't save unless you edit config), Lynx (the
original, I haven't tried DosLynx yet) is rock solid and you can also surf
the nearly forgotten gopher tunnels that live just under the surface of the
www. They both do TLS just fine.

Re: [Freedos-user] Video complains that DOS should not be mantained

Every few months or so I drop a line about it. Made a Dos Lynx usb boot
image once as a joke. ("Yeah? Well, I bet you twenty bucks I can boot
that old 32 laptop and get the weather in less than 30 seconds!") No
javascript, but it makes a great news reader. Pasting from my last email:

Quick FYI:

Dos lynx is still available. Tried it - still works.
https://groups.google.com/g/comp.os.msdos.djgpp/c/4GGhcKL_ZPQ/m/cTmonuz4BQAJ

That FTP server doesn't seem to work, none of the mirrors seem to work, so
I found it here:
https://mirrors.fe.up.pt/pub/djgpp/current/v2tk/

Last I tried, links also worked fairly well. Easier config, but no gopher.
http://links.twibright.com/download.php

However, in graphical mode it tends to lock up after a few pages.

Up to date cert bundles can be obtained here thanks to our friends at curl:

Re: [Freedos-user] networking/wifi

2021-03-20 Thread Dan Schmidt
Long time ago, I had an orinoco card that was 802.11b that was supposed to
work with DOS. Could never get it to work, eventually threw it out in
frustration.

Some very good and interesting suggestions have been made. However, I
believe the cheapest/easiest may be a simple wireless bridge. An old
tplink wr841n can make a good bridge.

For my laptop, I bought an old IOGear GWU627. (I have a handful of small
bridges - that one boot the fastest) Plug it in the ethernet, usb for
power, duct tape it together and there you have it: Wireless DOS with
Lynx.
(or links, or telnet, or ftp, ect)

Re: [Freedos-user] Freedos USB Pendrive

2020-03-07 Thread Dan Schmidt
I have had luck with the following:
Insert the USB pendrive BEFORE boot. Use FDISK/FORMAT to properly format
the usb. Shut down and remove the usb. Put files on usb, then insert the
pendrive back in before boot. After boot, you should be able to access the
file on usb.

I'm not sure if this works for a Pentium, I believe it depends on the
BIOS. There are limited USB drivers for DOS, but I've never gotten them to
work.

[Freedos-user] Lynx Live

2019-12-01 Thread Dan Schmidt
In an effort to demonstrate Lynx (ie - a text web browser) on Dos as a
viable, fast and fun option, I created a boot img to do so and squirreled
it away in the forgotten tunnels of the gophernet where I hope it shall
only be found by people who will not unduly pester me.

P.S. In the interest of preventing this from devolving into a "how to
gopher" thread, just go here:

We did talk at length about it almost exactly a year ago. The tldr version
is that you would need ssh2d386 and you have to have access to modify the
ssh config on the server to support older ciphers. All my attempts to get
a decent C coder interested in updating the project have failed.

I am unsure what it is that makes ssh2dos so unstable for me - nobody else
has this issue?

I would like to answer Ulrich on how he can modify his Ubuntu server, but
first, a warning: These algorithms were disabled because they are obsolete
and insecure. Using a token based login, such as google-authenticator, may
be advisable if your server is public facing.

Firstly, add this to your server's /etc/ssh/sshd_config:

KexAlgorithms diffie-hellman-group1-sha1,curve25519-sha...@libssh.org
,ecdh-sha2-nistp256,ecdh-sha2-nistp384,ecdh-sha2-nistp521,diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha256,diffie-hellman-group14-sha1
Ciphers 3des-cbc,blowfish-cbc,aes128-cbc,aes128-ctr,aes256-ctr
HostKeyAlgorithms +ssh-dss

Then, make use of the -g option - it goes BEFORE your username in ssh2dos.
You should now be able to connect.

I do not know why simply adding +diffie-hellman-group1-sha1 doesn't work,
it seems it should. Also, I was in a rush - I may be excluding some newer
options - report back if you find/add them with success.

I am equally as stunned - I will remember this day as the day I tried to
help somebody on the internet and they said "thank you" instead of flaming
or ignoring me.

My ssh2dos is very unstable - it usually crashes on exit or after five to
ten minutes. Do you have this issue as well? I am curious if I should try
a different version of DOS.

They deprecated that cipher - you can make it work, but it is vulnerable.
Also, ssh2dos is very unstable in my experience. I wish somebody would
write a decent ssh for dos.

FYI - I have found this new compile of Lynx to be very stable/compatible.
If you have an old computer and want to put it to good use, FreeDOS with
lynx is an excellent option. It's a very fast way to read weather/news
without ads.

Sry, didn't see your response. FreeDos, Pentium, but I'm guessing it may
run on less. Get a nic card, an Ethernet to Wireless bridge, and you are
good to go. And a lot of time, especially for Lynx. Links is slightly
unstable, but easy to setup and better web page compatibility. Lynx is
notably faster, has better shorcuts (numbered links) and runs rock solid.
(Plus, access to the Gophernet) A great solution for reading news. Can
provide hints on setup if needed.

Re: [Freedos-user] WIFI on DOS (was: bsum - compute BSD checksums of your files)

2017-04-24 Thread Dan Schmidt
That is a router, I can't guarantee it would work. (unless you put openwrt
on it) However, this is built specifically to bridge:

https://www.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Universal-Ethernet-Adapter-GWU627/dp/B004UAKCS6

Takes around 20 seconds to connect, which is longer than it takes DOS to
boot on my machine. (can be powered by usb)

2017-04-23 Thread Dan Schmidt
Is this thread still about wireless for Dos? If not, sorry for posting.

If so, I bought a wireless to ethernet bridge - smaller than a deck of
cards, runs on usb power - works great for my Dos machine. I tried a wifi
card that supposedly supported dos - never could get it working, threw it
away in disgust.

Unetbootin will work for disk or iso, however, I have come across usb that

Re: [Freedos-user] SSH2DOS - no connection with recent servers

2017-01-30 Thread Dan Schmidt
I didn't try the 386 version, perhaps that will be more stable. Also, if
you type "reset" before exiting, you can avoid "missing dos screen." (IE -
the crash every time I exited)

Ulrich, my friend, I am not sure why you would want to run DOS in
VIrtualBox on a MacBookPro, but I am glad I could help you. :-) Years
ago, several other technicians laughed at me when I bought an old Pentium
for $5 saying"You can't do anything with that!" FreeDos helped me prove
them wrong.

Re: [Freedos-user] SSH2DOS - no connection with recent servers

2017-01-27 Thread Dan Schmidt
I am equally as stunned - I will remember this day as the day I tried to
help somebody on the internet and they said "thank you" instead of flaming
or ignoring me.

My ssh2dos is very unstable - it usually crashes on exit or after five to
ten minutes. Do you have this issue as well? I am curious if I should try
a different version of DOS.

I forgot - you may need to regenerate your keys with "ssh-keygen -A" after
modifying the server.

Re: [Freedos-user] SSH2DOS - no connection with recent servers

2017-01-26 Thread Dan Schmidt
I am unsure what it is that makes ssh2dos so unstable for me - nobody else
has this issue?

I would like to answer Ulrich on how he can modify his Ubuntu server, but
first, a warning: These algorithms were disabled because they are obsolete
and insecure. Using a token based login, such as google-authenticator, may
be advisable if your server is public facing.

Firstly, add this to your server's /etc/ssh/sshd_config:

KexAlgorithms diffie-hellman-group1-sha1,curve25519-sha...@libssh.org
,ecdh-sha2-nistp256,ecdh-sha2-nistp384,ecdh-sha2-nistp521,diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha256,diffie-hellman-group14-sha1
Ciphers 3des-cbc,blowfish-cbc,aes128-cbc,aes128-ctr,aes256-ctr
HostKeyAlgorithms +ssh-dss

Then, make use of the -g option - it goes BEFORE your username in ssh2dos.
You should now be able to connect.

I do not know why simply adding +diffie-hellman-group1-sha1 doesn't work,
it seems it should. Also, I was in a rush - I may be excluding some newer
options - report back if you find/add them with success.

 Hi Karen!

I am using the exact same program and version.

for the record, I am not using freedos, but the ms dos 7.10 package

I guess your servers still run OpenSSH in versions earlier than 6.9.

may I ask again what your issue is presently?

>

Actually I have given up on it. I spent another day trying to get it to
 work, but without success.

The problem is that I can’t connect to an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS server with
 OpenSSH 7.2.

 SSH2D386 gives the message:

 Expected KEX_DH_GEX_GROUP
 DH key exchange failed

 The server logs:
 Jan 27 00:02:22 ubuntu-VirtualBox sshd[2651]: error: kex protocol
error: type 30 seq 1 [preauth]
 Jan 27 00:02:22 ubuntu-VirtualBox sshd[2651]: error: Received
 disconnect from 192.168.1.110 port 645:3: Expected KEX_DH_GEX_GRO

As I wrote I already had problems connecting to a Debian 8 server with
 OpenSSH 6.7.
But there I could fix it with these lines in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on the
 server.

 Ciphers aes128-cbc
 KexAlgorithms diffie-hellman-group-exchange-sha1
 MACs hmac-sha1
 HostKeyAlgorithms ssh-css

But in OpenSSH 7.2 this didn’t work.

 What else did I try?

 I tried to set MTU=576 in C:\FDOS\WATTCP.CFG.

 I tried to recompile OpenSSH.
The first time with adding this line in in compat.c:
 { "SSHDOS*",SSH_OLD_DHGEX },
The second time with this one:
 { "SSHDOS*",SSH_BUG_NOREKEY|SSH_BUG_FIRSTKEX },

Both were not able to let SSH2D386 connect. It worked great with other
 SSH clients.

The idea was that SSH2DOS uses code from PuTTY and there were already
several exceptions in combat.c for old PuTTY versions. The reason seems
 to
be that OpenSSH implemented RFC4419 and old PuTTY versions and SSH2DOS

They deprecated that cipher - you can make it work, but it is vulnerable.
Also, ssh2dos is very unstable in my experience. I wish somebody would
write a decent ssh for dos.

[Freedos-user] Lynx DOS

2017-01-21 Thread Dan Schmidt

I use two that do SSL/TLS quite adequately:

Links2

lynx also does ssl, but this version takes some work to get going:
