Re: [Freedos-user] virtual OS/bootdisk?

2008-07-21 Thread kd4d
Hi David:

It is straightforward to create a bootable FreeDOS CD. I think the easiest way
to do it
is to take a floppy disk image and boot that from the CD. This restricts the
boot image
to 1.44MBytes (or 2.88MBytes if you get tricky). However, you can add a CD-ROM
driver
and then add a lot of files.

Some years ago, I spent a while learning how to dual-boot FreeDOS and Windows.
As
part of that work, I developed a lot of bootable CD's for MSDOS and FreeDOS.

I did this from Windows computers, some which lack floppy drives. For a
detailed
description of how I did this, including the free tools I used, see:

http://k1ea.com/hints/Creating_a_Bootable_DOS_CD_V%201.5.pdf

This is one way to do it - I think about the easiest if you are creating the
CD's from
a Windows computer.

Let me know if I can answer any questions.

Mark

Yes, this is definitely allowed. Pretty much everything included in
FreeDOS is distributed under the GNU GPL or a similarly "free"
license. (A few packages in FreeDOS 1.0 - specifically in NET and UTIL
- were under a "non-commercial use" license, which usually means you
cannot use it in a profit-driven business.) So you can certainly use
FreeDOS to create a boot CD to help scan your system.

You may even consider downloading the 1-disk BALDER "distro" of
FreeDOS, linked to from our "Download" page. You can get it directly
from
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/distributions/unofficial/balder/

If your system can boot from a floppy (more recent systems may not
include a floppy drive) it is very easy to modify the files on the
1.44MB floppy, to make this an emergency boot floppy with just the
utilities you need.

If you cannot boot from a floppy, then you can start with one of the
FreeDOS "live CD" images we have at
http://www.freedos.org/freedos/files/

Hope that helps.

Re: [Freedos-user] virtual OS/bootdisk?

2008-07-21 Thread Larry
Consider downloading the iso for damn small linux at:

http://www.damnsmalllinux.org

It's a bootable CD and is great for doing system repair. It can handle most any
type of disk system (dos, window, linux, etc) and can do networking and usb as
well. All from the boot cdrom.

It's so small it can find on a credit-card sized cdrom. You can purchase those
I believe.

Freedos is Free Software. Read the licence or in short read the wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software

You have the right to do almost everything you want. In your case it's
very much allowed to burn/install/copy wherever you want. So far about
the legal part.

I recommend you to use CD-RW and a virtualizer for your tests. DOS on CD
is no problem. But personally I prefer more to have bootable USB with
DOS instant of CD because it's more easy to modify/update.

If you want it on CD first create a (virtual) bootable floppy image.
Later burn it on CD using fdd emulation boot. Or use grub4dos or memdisk
to emulate the bootable floppy. The most easy way for single boot would
be to burn such a floppy image with nero.

[Freedos-user] virtual OS/bootdisk?

2008-07-21 Thread david lowe

I am wondering if it's possible (and allowed) to burn the FreeDOS OS on a cd,
instead of preparing to install it to my hard drive. I want to use it to use
it primarily as a bootdisk and to scan and repair for errors. I don't plan on
installing just yet, because I
need to do a major overhaul on my system. I've found trojans in my _Restore
database, and I can't view more than three windows in IE before it crashes.
WinME has poor support online.
