If framework carries with it a stigma, it was not my intention to hint at an unfinished project. My intention was to capture the fact that the FreeIPA system is modular and plugin based, such that additional components can be added to the framework. If there is a better word to describe this trait, I am all for it! Authorization felt like a good strong word that would reflect the v2 features of HBAC/SUDO/DOGTAG. Something that very clearly separates FreeIPA from 'other' authentication solutions such as Standard LDAP, Kerberos, Novell eDirectory, or Symas Unified User Management. > I'll take my crack at it: > "FreeIPA is an integrated identity and computer management solution, > built on open standards, centered on servicing Linux and Unix based > infrastructures" > > Simo. > > -- > Simo Sorce * Red Hat, Inc * New York > > ___ > Freeipa-devel mailing list > Freeipa-devel@redhat.com > https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/freeipa-devel ___ Freeipa-devel mailing list Freeipa-devel@redhat.com https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/freeipa-devel

Exl;ainig that it integrates Kerbers an LDAp is the second step, but it really is an implementation detail. I typacilly tell people that we do for Linux systems what Active Directory does for Windows systems. This explanation works for people familiar with AD, and then we can talk about how IPA is built on open source code and open standards. The closest we have4 right now is "FreeIPA is an integrated security information management solution ..." this is a good start, but is a little generic. I'll throw this out as a strawman: FreeIPA is a centralized management solution for Users and Computers. I suspect term "Identity management Framework" might be too general to orient people not already thinking "Users and Computers" The term Scalable is an unnecessary buzzword. Can we cut it down to this? "FreeIPA is a centralized authentication and authorization management framework, built on open standards, with a focus towards the needs of Linux and Unix clients."
