I installed the Pioneer DVR-116D lately, it's a cheap fast drive. Yes
you need Patchburn if you want to burn from the Finder. But if you use
Toast for burning you'll have all the speeds available w/o Patchburn.
There is also a speedburn patch on the net so you will be able to

Panther includes few profiles.
(All PatchBurn does is create a profile file that says the thing can burn).
