Laserwriter 4/600 cartridge problem
I bought a reconditioned cartridge for my LaserWriter 4/600 ages ago. Not used it all that much (this is the bit that hurts!) and it suddenly started causing darkish tones on one side of the paper that was printed. I pulled the cartridge out and it was extraordinary, when I tried to gently sway it to even the toner it simply started to leak out of both sides like it thought it was a sand egg timer. Bloody hell! Why would the toner do this, are there seals that deteriorate? Anyway, appreciate anyone knowing where best to get a replacement (I am so loathe to get rid of it, I even have a perfect spare machine! But perhaps I should just buy a new USB machine, they are cheap enough I guess. I already have to start a 7300 on 9 to use it from my Quicksilver on X via ethernet and a little apple supplied program... -- dorayme -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. Re: Laserwriter 4/600 cartridge problem
I have an old LaserWriter 16/600PS which I bought used several years ago. It has given (and is still giving) me yeoman service. It prints better than either of my wife's HP (much newer) printers (they give a pixellated (?) print-out on angled print boxes in ClarisWorks, etc.). I used it for several years with my old PPC 9600/300, to which it is still connected with the old Mac printer serial cable. There are a couple of old programs which I use once or twice a year on this machine. I also have it connected to my newer G4 using a parallel to USB converter cable. I tried desperately a year or so ago to install it on the G3, and it finally started to print as Unknown printer, whereas it comes up correctly under its original name with the 9600. I have no idea why it works this way, and I was nearly ready to toss it out when it finally started to print using OS X 4.11. I have three queries: I am afraid ever to put the G4 into Classic mode, for fear it will never come back to OS X, and/or print correctly again. Also, I am afraid to upgrade to the newer OS X.5 ... systems, for fear (see above). (I also purchased a HP Color LaserJet CP1215 which, it seems, will never work with any Mac. Ah, well, I can always use my wife's PC, faute de mieux.) Right now, and probably indefinitely, I am in the If it ain't broke, don't fix it mode. Any advice? My apologies if this is the wrong forum, or thread. Please move it to the correct one, if this is necessary. Thanks for all and any advice. RE: FYI:Fan on video board.
The fans on the 9800 series of video cards are notoriously unreliable - partly because these cards do run pretty hot compared to others. A lot of guys replace the fans with something that pushes a lot more air. The fan in my 9800 128mb went south after 6 months of use and I know of two others that lasted about the same before replacement was necessary. Sometimes the card overheats when the fan fails and you have to replace the videocard itself. After doing some trouble shooting I discovered that the fan on the ATI mac pro video board was rubbing on the heat sink. Disassembled and remounted the fan and all is well. Re: no video on restart on G5 Quad. Help?
Thanks for the quick response. I tried replacing the battery, and that seems to have cleared up some other issues I was having (prolonged blue screen on boot up), but it didn't solve the no video on reboot problem. When I log in and share the screen, instead of the video card being properly identified in system profiler, it just lists it as a VGA Compatible controller, but it lists the manufacturer correctly as ATI. When I cold boot it sees it as a ATI Radeon X1900. I had the same result with the original Nvidia card. It only list 3 resolutions on the displays pref pane: 1024x768, 1280x1024 and 1680x1050. I'm using an Apple 23 aluminum HD display, and none of those shows up on the display when I try selecting it. Maybe the slot has gone bad? Is that possible? I pressed the reset button on the logic board when I put the new battery in. Any help is appreciated. -Hal On Dec 24, 2009, at 12:20 PM, Clark Martin wrote: Hal wrote: Hi all. I'm new to the group, but have been a member of some of the other LEM groups for a while. I've been having a problem with my G5 Quad that I hope I can get some insight on. It's running 10.5.8, though this problem has been consistent across OS versions. When I restart the G5, it reboots fine, but there is no video. If I use screen sharing to log in from another computer, I can see that it booted fine, but it won't send video to the DVI port on the video card. This behavior is exhibited with several DVI displays (I've tried 3), including an APple 23 Cinema display. I've also tried 2 video cards, the original PCIe 6600, as well as a flashed Radeon X1900. If I tell it to shut down, and then start it up, it works fine. When logged in remotely check System Preferences / Display and see what video mode it's trying to display in (width x heighth and vert sync speed). It's possible it is not one the monitor can display. Try changing it to something you know the monitor can handle. Also check your PRAM battery, it may be dead or dying. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. No matter what card I put in it, it would act funky. Reset button on board didnt do anything. Try this and lemme know if it works. Shut computer down and while holding down Command-Alt-O-F to go into Open Firmware (I know, you gotta be a contortionist for that). When in OF, type in reset-nvram and hit enter. Then type in set-defaults and hit enter. Then type in reset-all and hit enter. Computer will reboot and may come up fine after that. If that doesnt work, I recommend downloading Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner or Onyx and cleaning all your system and kernel caches. Hope this helps. =) -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs.
