I too noticed the discrepancy. It is worth checking with the seller.

You probably can get it for openers if you want to bid the minimum. I
checked completed sales and there were several recently sold below
$200 including one for $125. Looks like prices are dropping.

A 733 Digital Audio (previous model year) will run circles around a
Quicksilver 733, because of the QS's lack of L3 cache.

Yes, as others have said, the 800MHz single (QS 2002) also lacks the
L3.

Is there any particular reason (apart from prices) that anyone would
prefer a Digital Audio or Quicksilver to the Mirrored-Door machines? I
think the MDDs support more RAM (2GB?), I thought I heard rumours
about reliability problems with some MDD models (maybe not enough

You will want to replace the optical drive.

Most of the so-called "super drives" in these specific models are
DVR-104s and do not support + media well (if at all) and cannot do
DL, period.

I believe both the dual 800 MHz and the dual 1.0 GHz have 2 MB of
cache per processor.

There are indeed certain single processor G4s which have no cache
(yet the board layout includes a place for the cache chips). I
believe the 800 MHz single is one of these.

Re: Best G4 powermac??

2009-03-11 Thread insightinmind
Check the model number against Mactracker.

Could also ask the Seller (then its "binding").

Is this the one?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-PowerMac-1GHz-DP-1GB-Superdrive-40GB-
Quicksilver_W0QQitemZ370171584905QQcmdZViewItemQQptZApple_Desktops?
hash=item370171584905&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1234|66%3A2|
65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

I believe that is a QS 2002 and it would have the L3 cache. Same as
mine here at home.

Ask the Seller, though. Shipping not free on this one.

Good luck.

The single 800 was the low end of the 2002 second generation QSs and
is cacheless like the 733 and to be avoided. The dual 800 was the high
end of the 2001 first generation and has a L3 cache and is a good

Booting in safe-mode (hold down the shift key while booting) clears
caches, and does other things as well.

Most economical would be the DA or QS.

Both are amenable to the LBA48 property addition to the ROM, thereby
giving both the capability of the QS 2002 and later G4 Macs.

I would recommend the dual 1.0 GHz from the QS 2002 over the dual 800
MHz from the QS 2001.

The DA (any variant) and the QS 2001 and QS 2002 are 133 MHz bus
machines, with four spare PCI slots in addition to the standard AGP
video slot, and 1.5 GB RAM, maximum.

These are very inexpensive, and are maximally trouble-free.

If you must install a non-Apple CPU, the Giga-Designs and OWC are the
same, and are available in singles and, occasionally, in duals.

The card is "Sapphire" brand. It has the Radeon 9000Pro chipset but it
IS a PC card.

I believel Mac Radeon cards are ATI branded - except those flashed by
their owners. Someone out there might know better.

Don't know about flashing the 9000, though. Google should help.

The image of the card shows three outputs, and it may support Apple

I would say you have to flash it, and I would listen to Pete about the

No it doesn't. There is no ADC connector on that thing, an ADC
connector is larger than a DVI, and has rounded sides. the connectors
on that system are VGA, S-video and DVI. I think they just swiped a
generic Radeon 9000 spec list from ATI, which DOES make a 9000 card
that has a ADC connector.

Well, upon further experimentation, the jaggies were the result of two
things: the low light conditions, and some peculiarities with their
snapshot function. Here is a test image taken under better conditions.

(Student group had a bake sale this morning...)

Bottom line, it looks as though the claimed resolution of 1280 x 1024
(1.3 megapixels) is based on an interlaced video signal. The snapshot
takes one frame.

The true resolution of the CCD is very likely 640x512, so when it's
blown up to full claimed resolution it looks like crap. Their included
video monitor properly interlaces both frames and displays it as a
single image on the screen, so the OS screen cap looks better.

Not exactly false advertising, but quite close, imo. It could also
just be the Mac driver, as well. I haven't installed it under Windows
to see what it looks like there.

As a video chat camera, under good lighting, it's looks to be a good
webcam...it's just too bad it isn't a USB2 camera, so it works
natively with iChat.

The Radeon 9000 is not easy to flash as I recall

A quick google shows some similar on eBay as well.

You'd think with an ADC connector, it might be Apple compatible ...
but you need to keep asking around.

I've heard, sometimes, these cards are flashed PC cards.

video upgrade

2009-03-11 Thread abrock

Hello All,
I would like to upgrade the video card in my G4 Digital Audio (466).
I'm on a tight budget, and I found this on overstock.

http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Sapphire-100545-SR-Radeon9000Pro-Graphics-Card-Refurbished/3504887/product.html?sec_iid=33972

My question is. Will it work in my G4? Or will I have to flash the
BIOS? Says it supports Apple displays (ADC).

Thanks,
Alex

Is this not a PCI-E card? Make sure before you proceed.
