Re: upgrade XServe G5: desktop processor?

2011-05-24 Thread Matevž Markovič
Hy!

Here is the link to the Xserve G5 developer note:
http://developer.apple.com/legacy/mac/library/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Servers/XserveG5/XserveG5.pdf
.

I still do not know whether it is possible to install second-cpu, perhaps
others can tell you more? Do you have a secondary cpu slot?
Anyway, in the note it states: "Warning: DON’T TRY TO USE OLDER PROCESSOR
CARDS! This connector differs from those in earlier
computers and it is not pin-compatible."

As for the memory upgrade, the maximum for this computer is 8GB (184-pin,
unbuffered, ECC DDR400 SDRAM DIMMs, unbuffered,
8-byte, with parity, PC3200 compliant).

Yours,

Matevž Markovič

upgrade XServe G5: desktop processor?

2011-05-24 Thread Bruce Ryan

Hi there

I'm the proud owner of an XServe G5, single processor 2·0 GHz (Model
Identifier: RackMac3,1). SInce I'm now using it as my main mac, I'm
pondering cheap ways to increase its performance. (It already has
three 250GB 7200repm hard disks, albeit they're second-hand 2·5"
drives.)

So the other two obvious possibilities are
- more RAM (it has eight 256MB PC3200U sticks)
- 2nd processor. Does the 2nd processor need to be specifically for an
XServe or would any 2·0 GHz G5 processor do.

many thanks

Bruce

The G5 has an 'AGP Pro' slot, not an AGP slot. They're different:

This is odd, because I don't think the driver puts anything in the pram. I
suspect a coincidental issue with something else.

> Any comments about this c. 2006 mouse driver by Kensington?

It works just fine with mine on both the computers it's installed on (both
running 10.6 btw, but it worked just fine in every OS I've ever used it in,
which goes back to OS 7

I've actually NEVER had a problem with Kensington's drivers; the only problems
with the trackballs I've ever had was when they physically wore out, and older
ones' amazing ability to attract cat fur to the optical sensors :-) I've become
pretty adept at field-stripping them to clean 'em...

Yes that will help, as will religiously marking them as 'Not Junk' when you
find them. Sometimes Mail finally learns to recognize them.

Alternatively, you can use Mail rules to move those specific emails into their
own folder before the junk rule is applied to the inbox, sometimes these
messages are just too spammish looking to be properly evaluated by the Junk
rule.

opt-cmd-P-R when installing Kensington MouseWorks 3?

2011-05-24 Thread Bill Connelly
Is it normal to have to do a opt-cmd-P-R after installing the
Kensington MouseWorks 3 into OS X 10.5.8?

I kept getting kernal panics on my Digital Audio Dual 533 under 10.5.8
after a first attempt with a fresh download of the file from their site.

After doing a Safe Boot, and a Reboot, yet another kernal panic.

I finally decided to try the opt-cmd-P-R, and all seems to be well ...

Any comments about this c. 2006 mouse driver by Kensington?
When did OS X 10.5 come out, anyway?
