I had 2 Targus USB devices (a Hub and a Reader) crap on me

1) Model# ACH7405US
2) A reader for the following: Memory Stick/Pro Duo Magic Gate, XD, Compact

Flash, I, II, IBM MicroDrive, SDHC, SD/MMC
This one got so hot it actually warped its case

I told Targus and their reply was to tell me where to mail the devices (at
my expense)

Yes. I have done that with several Macs for years.

Of course the hardwiring part of this negates the need for wireless
hookup

Sonnet makes a 3 HDD drive kit name G5 Jive that holds 3 SATA drives in the
empty forward bay just behind the front grill.
Along with a 3 or 4 port internal SATA PCI-X card. This is a real nice setup in
that it gets rid of a lot of external cables. This machine is 10TB. I also have
an OWC 4 bay RAID box to keep some extra things up to date.

interesting observatins,
Got teh gallery install finished and working the bugs out.
Darkening the SCREEN: This installation works with LOGIC in region-
repeat playback (hopefully 24/7) and as long as it's in PLAY mode,
LOGIC never lets the screen sleep. This is not a big deal as I can
just hit PLAY, then manually kill the screen with F2 and walk away.

Where it has shown a problem is SOMEHOW, after hours of flawless
playback, the thing just goes SILENT.
It's still RUNNING... it still is running the counter and the cursor
line is moving across the screen like it's playing, but no sound
comes out and no meters on the screen are bouncing. Stopping and
restarting it doesn;t fix it.
what DOES fix it is to click on the green REGION marker bar at the
top of the screen and then sound comes back.

Compatible 2TB hard disk for Powermac G5 Quad Core

2012-05-14 Thread Interocetor
Hello everyone

I wanted to report that I successfully installed a 2TB Hitachi
Deskstar internal hard disk in the second drive bay of my Powermac G5
Quad Core. My machine was manufactured in October, 2005.

The new drive is a SATA 3 drive, but I had no issues -- no
configuration via jumpers of anything else needed to make it work with
the G5's SATA 1 interface. I know compatibility between the newer
SATA 3 drives from some manufacturers has been an issue for users on
at least some Powermac G5's. No problem for this particular Hitachi
drive on my system. It is available from Amazon for $129. Here is
the detailed model info:

Hitachi Deskstar 3.5" 2TB 7200RPM SATA III 32MB Cache Internal Hard
Drive 0S02861

Installation went without a hitch. After I installed it and powered
my machine back up, OS X (Leopard) asked me if I wanted to initialize
it and then popped me into Disk Utility, where I set it up as one
partition. No problem there either.

Powermac still lives, and I am keeping mine for as long as I can.

Most PC chipset cards can be made to work in OS X with a little work
and the correct software. Cards that have Broadcom or Atheros chipsets
can normally be made to work as Apple "Airport" using Apple's built-in
software. You'll need to go to System Profiler>PCI and identify the
card and its chipset EXACTLY by Vendor ID# and Device ID# (two #'s in
the form 0x). Once you identify the chipset, you can search out
software to drive the card, or perhaps modify the existing Mac
software to work with the card. This may be too much work for you, you
might just want to buy a more compatible card? I'd look for an 802.11n
card with a Broadcom chipset which can always be made to work if you
add the correct ID#'s to the correct Airport kext (there is a script
to called "bcm43xx_enabler_053" that adds native Apple Airport support
for all known Broadcom chipsets & cards.) I'd mess with your original
card first. If you send me the ID#s I can help you off-list to find
appropriate software to make the PC card work.

Yes, it's simple. Just plug the G5 (or a small ethernet switch for multiple
devices) into the LAN port of the airport extreme. The AEx will then work
however it's set to get WAN content, either via the WAN ethernet port or as a
wifi bridge.

You could also get an Airport module for the g5; it's also possible all you
need is the little T antenna for it., check system profiler to see if there is
an airport device...

Re: PM G4: Old CPU back in, no boot

2012-05-14 Thread Alex Sciortino
Reseat the CPU and try the upgraded CPU and check if the heat sink is securely
mounted.

Problem is, the Mac doesn't boot anymore.
When I press the power button, it doesn't make any sound at all (no
boing,
no beep), and the screen stays black. Fans are running, the power

Any idea how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance,

It sounds like it may be a bent pin on the old processor. I would
double check tham.

PM G4: Old CPU back in, no boot

2012-05-14 Thread Valter Prahlad
Having acquired a G5, I'm in the process of selling my old PowerMac G4 DA.
It has an upgrade CPU (OWC Mercury 1,4 GHz), that I'm selling on its own.

Today I took out the upgrade CPU, and I put back in the old, original Apple
667 MHz CPU (I applied thermal grease, connected the CPU fan wire, pressed
the PMU switch).

Problem is, the Mac doesn't boot anymore.
When I press the power button, it doesn't make any sound at all (no boing,
no beep), and the screen stays black. Fans are running, the power button is
lit, and that's it.
The HD doesn't seem to be accessed (no whirring from the drive's heads).

One week ago, I used this Mac (with the upgrade CPU still in), and it had no
problem.

Any idea how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks in advance,
Valter

PS: Just in case, here's the other specs: 1 GB Ram (2 x 512), 1 HD 80GB,
GeForce Ti 4600 graphic card, USB2 + FW400 card, SCSI Adaptec 2930 card,
Griffin G4Port serial port.
MacOS 9.2.2 and 10.4.11 on different partitions.

AFAIK, the 9600 is better than the 5200.
You better check some benchmark articles, though, like this one:
http://www.insidemacgames.com/features/view.php?ID=280&Page=1
Google "GeForce FX 5200 Ultra Radeon 9600 Pro"

IIRC, the most powerful cards for those Macs were the Radeon X800XT and
Geforce 6600.
