I agree... reminds me of 1950's view of what futuristic things were
supposed to look like. I think mine is quite pretty too... it's the
one between the blue and white g3 and the quicksilver..

I know the poster has decided to go with G5. He also has the slower
450Mhz processor there. But for all of us thinking about when to
upgrade, and what to upgrade to - the time factor and love factor is
what has governed my decision to keep my beloved dinosaur.

I bought mine new at the end of '98 or '99, got it set up and have
never turned it off... It cycles between sleep mode and usage and has
done so for ten years now. Great machine... I have definately gotten
my money's worth ($2500 new). I have recently updated my system
software to 10.4 and have gotten all the complementary updates I
think this computer at it's 400Mhz speed is just too slow for this
modern software. Back in it's day it was lightening fast and now, in
it's old age, seem's to take a little longer to accomplish routine
tasks (like grandma!) But I guess it's still acceptable. I'll keep
mine in good shape for my son to use when he's old enough. Thats the
great thing about Mac's... they are almost timeless. I couldn't
imagine try to use a ten year old Windoze machine

Thanks to all of you for responding! Lots of differing views. After
searching Ebay I have concluded that I would probably be better off
buying a used G5. Although I love my G4! I have never turned this
computer off since I bought it new in 1999 (except for moving twice)
and it still runs flawlessly... it's just slow as christmas with the
newer software (OSX 10.4). I can't bear to retire this thing just yet.
Guess I'll just save it for my son (due March 7th) I guess this g4
will make a great starter computer for the boy.

Anyway... thanks again!

great for most usage surfing, email, quicken, and what have

(quicken and web going at the same time), playing music as she does
it,  while I watch a video off it streaming to the AppleTV.    It
gets just a smidge unhappy.   Plus, USB 1.1 and the small screen

We've been taking about getting a new computer for a while as we
just want one computer in the house...   right now I'm debating
between dredging up the leftover parts at work to build a G4 tower
and get a 1.8GHz processor upgrade, USB2 card, some new big HDDs
(pair of 500s should do it) nice 24 screen.  we'd be hitting
around $800, it'd be better than what we've got, but still several
generations old.     Or we get a new iMac $1500ish is a bit of a
pill to swallow, but  we got 6 years out of our emac and I see no
reason why a new iMac would be any different..      Tough one...

on the BTW, I drive a 1985 VW Quantum wagon in the winter,  come

Fuego, mint condition and very reliable. Selling that one though I
can't bring my self to use it as a winter car (not a speck of rust
on it)  and I prefer my Ghia in the summer :)    Oh and my wife
  hates it heh!

Mel, yup those IIci are the best, as i recall you bought most of
mine from me some years back.  I still have one tucked away with my
old plus and all the parts and software i need for it, got a
  daystar turbo 601/66 in it.

If you have access to a 24 in screen, then I take a look at the
 mini's lottsa powere-itty bitty box.

I am thinking about a processor upgrade for my G4/400 AGP

2009-01-04 Thread RiverMan

Has anyone tried the upgrade from XLR8 or Newer Tech? I read about a
1.6 Ghz and a 2.0 Ghz upgrade for my G4 but would love to hear from
people who have tried it. Or should I just save my cash and get a
newer model?

Thanks!
