Re: APC ES-500 now APC ES-750 what do you all use?

2011-11-02 Thread geno.y

OK GUYS, WHAT BRANDS DO YOU PREFER? not sure i want another APC now,
 am annoyed with them.

 Belkin, Tripplite?

I've got 3 APC ES 550s and a 350 around here. Also have a Belkin.
These are all the lower end models, I refuse to pay more than around
$50 for a UPS. All have been working fine for years.

The Belkin is interesting in that the battery that came in it was only
a 5Ah, but the battery compartment was large enough to hold a 7Ah
replacement. When looking for a replacement battery both were on the
list. The larger the Ah the longer the backup power will last.

I've never had a low battery indicator work yet. Every time I've been
alerted to a bad battery is with a power failure and a non-functioning
UPS.

You didn't say which model UPS you were using, but more than likely
you could swap out the battery from your sons working UPS and test
it.

Re: CCC on network?

2010-05-23 Thread geno.y

I'd like to use CCC to backup drives over a network. Or do I need a
 different application.
I want to do some backups on my drives that are connected to machines via
 Ethernet

I've never tried using CCC for daily backup. For daily backup I use
ChronoSync to backup our network. It's very versatile and only $40.
I've used it for years and all of the upgrades are free.

Sync  is NOT equal to  Backup.

Two totally different functions that serve totally different purposes.

If you only sync from a to b it's a backup.

Well maybe if you only sync then you get a bad backup??  CCC will
tell you if the copy will be bootable.
I think that's the way it works.

I just looked at the CCC web site, seem they offer a full version of
the program for free now. IIRC the last time I used ccc there were
features not included in the free version.

You said you wanted to backup over a network so I was thinking files
not boot drive. But the ccc web site has a help desk and the web site
says you can use it over a network.

I purchased a regular ATX 20 (24) pin ps.

I know the pinout is different for a QS, but I would think the

IBM got out of the HD business in 2002.

That means these new HDs are old stock, likely made in 2001 or before.

Yes, I forgot to mention that the date on them is 2002, so they’ve

Open them up and spray wd-40 on the moveable parts.

I was all out of WD-40, so I used some 5W-30 Pennzoil. The multi-grade
works great as they spin up to the full 10K.

Thanks for all the input. They aren’t worth sending back for a refund.
They only cost $23 shipped for the pair.

Unless there was an overwhelming opinion that they will die an early
death, I really didn’t want to bother with returning them.

I’ll continue to use them as is, squeak and all.

Thanks again. Geno

G3 With Squeaky Hard Drive

2010-03-30 Thread geno.y
Hi All,

The other day I bought 2 brand new SCSI drives from Computer Geeks off
ebay. The drives were so cheap, I couldn’t resist. I got what I paid
for.

Both new drives make a squeaky sound, sort of like a squeaky wheel.
It’s consistent, happens every 35 seconds or so. I know this isn’t a
good thing, but does it mean imminent drive failure or is it just a
nuisance sound?

I hate to RMA them, shipping will cost as much as the drives.

Just looking for opinions from the forum. I’ve had drive make a lot of
clicking sounds but never a squeak.

New drives:
IBM Ultrastar 73LZX 9GB 10k 4MB 68-pin SCSI Hard Drive
-Series: Ultrastar 73LZX
-Model: IC35L009UWD210-0

Installed them into my:
B/W G3 - 350Mhz / Rev. 2
OS 9.2.2.
Ram 896MB
Adaptec APD-29160N U160 SCSI PCI Card For MAC

TIA

I just confirmed that two of my G4 Gigabits have failed power
  supplies.
Is there any source for inexpensive replacements?
I know that there's a way to convert a generic PC PS to do the job,

I'm sure you're finding out that it is nearly impossible to repair or
replace a Mac PSU economically. If you change you mind about using a
pc power supply you'll find it's not that difficult, I can email
directions and wiring diagrams if you like.

I don’t know about Paul, but I would like a copy of the directions.
I’ve got a few G4 Gigabits and I know the PS will go sooner or later.

If it's just a hand full of files that you want to share between the
computers, I've been using an online storage utility called DropBox.
They will give you a free account, 2GB of storage. I've got it set up
on my office computer (G4 Tower / Gigabit Ethernet) and also my
notebook, HP Pavilion tx 1000, at home. It's okay on speed, I move
adobe illustrator files, word and excel documents.

If you install the software on both computers, it's available on your
computer just like a hard drive. I use it just like a extra hard
drive, so I don't have to carry an external hard drive with me to
bring work home. I like it because it's always up-to-date and in
sync.

If the software isn't installed on the computer you're using, you can
still access your account with any web browser and an internet
connection.

The best part is it's free, up to 2 GB anyway. That's enough space for
me, at least for now.

You can sign up for it here and give it a try. I'll get some extra
storage space if you use my link.

http://tinyurl.com/dx87x5

Or you can just google dropbox that should bring up www.getdropbox.com

I was carrying around a flash drive, but always forgot it on my desk
or on the coffee table at home. Dropbox has solved that problem.

Yes, several times.  I've been messing with this for a week.

Hi, first I must admit I fly by the seat-of-my-pants when it comes to
working on my network. I’ve never had this problem with wireless so I
don’t know if this will help at all.
But you say you can’t get your wired computer to get on line via your
router. I had a similar problem.

I was using DSL at the time. Configuration was something like: dsl
modem to router (4 onboard switch) to switch.

Everything was woking fine then one day, nothing worked.

After resting everything, only 1 (computer A) out of 6 computers would
connect to the broadband.

That 1 computer would work when connected directly to the dsl modem
and to the router. No other computer would work regardless of if it
were connected direct to the dsl modem or the router.

I went into the router configuration and set the router to show the ip
address of computer A.

After I did that all the other computers were back online to the
internet.
