I've got 3 APC ES 550s and a 350 around here. Also have a Belkin. These are all the lower end models, I refuse to pay more than around $50 for a UPS. All have been working fine for years. The Belkin is interesting in that the battery that came in it was only a 5Ah, but the battery compartment was large enough to hold a 7Ah replacement. When looking for a replacement battery both were on the list. The larger the Ah the longer the backup power will last. I've never had a low battery indicator work yet. Every time I've been alerted to a bad battery is with a power failure and a non-functioning UPS. You didn't say which model UPS you were using, but more than likely you could swap out the battery from your sons working UPS and test it.
