I believe that is where the auto-test jig connets to the motherboard
for testing.

Also.  I am getting tired of seeing the logic board laid out like an
autopsy victim and I am wanting to encase this puppy.  I doubt I will
have a Mac case to put it in.  In putting it in an old PC case, do I
need to use insulating washers on the back or front side of the logic
board?  Thanks, Dennis in Edna, TX

The site you are showing is not a position for a chip. There are no
pads there to which balls could be soldered; just vias (holes in the
board). The pattern of vias indicates to me that there is a chip in
that position on the other side of the board. Flip it over and see.
If so, then nothing is missing, and nothing additional was meant to go
there.

The gigabit Ethernet chip was meant to go in that spot.

The board with have either the larger 10/100/1000 chip (and its heat
sink) or the smaller 10/100 chip.

On a number of models, Apple uses a single raw board, and then it
populates it in different ways for different retail models.

 Is that the cpu location?

 Hi Bill:

I don't think it is the cpu location since the Sawtooth in the picture
is running and the processor is on the other side of the board from
 that
area. This chip is not necessary for the function of the board,
 but is
either an option or is the next step up from the Sawtooth. On looking
at a DA board I have, it looks like the DA has a chip there, so I
 am now
guessing that the chip that fits on the Sawtooth turns it into a DA.
But I am still wondering what that chip is. Thanks, Dennis in

Yes ... I was mistaken.

I thought this link would help:
http://www.macgurus.com/products/motherboards/mgwhichram.php

but they seem to stop with the Sawtooth as far as mobo diagrams go ...

Help is on the way offlist ...
