The gigabit Ethernet chip was meant to go in that spot.

The board with have either the larger 10/100/1000 chip (and its heat  
sink) or the smaller 10/100 chip.

On a number of models, Apple uses a single "raw" board, and then it  
populates it in different ways for different retail models.
