I can say the same about my G4s. All are still in use and working
perfectly. I have an upgraded Smurf at one of my elementary schools,
and an upgraded Yikes! at another. In my home I am running a DA Dual
1.53 Mhz G4 and have been able to run my music notation software
without ANY issues.
My only complaint is with streaming video, like HBOGO. Motion is not
smooth enough.

All of my G4s are running Tiger. (10.4.11)

I have used my 2002 Quicksilver G4 (867 MHz, Mac OS X 10.5.8)
everyday for about the past 9 years.

It does everything I need -- e-mail, web browsing, music, video and
photography.

I use NeoOffice as my document processor, presentation maker, and for
spreadsheets.

I am quite happy with it!

I have just recently switched to a G5.

Before that, I have been using a PM G4 DA (upgraded with a 1.4 GHz CPU) for
many years, and I just loved it. Apart from some slugginess with Adobe CS3
and when browsing, it was still just fine.
If the G5 wasn't for free :-D I'd still be using the G4.

Gaming, of course, is a different thing. There, the newer the better.

I'd say that OSX loves Ram. Having 1GB Ram might improve speed (especially
if you have several open apps at the same time).
I think you can easily find PC133 SDRAM sticks for free or almost, nowadays.

I for one downloaded TenFourFox in *all* its optimized builds, because I do
have a G3, G4s (both kinds: 7400 and 7450) and G5s.

So, 1) technically you should only count me once. And 2) I am sure that some
people downloaded it twice.

I’d estimate no more than 10,000 TenFourFox users, which is then in return a
good estimate of users still running PowerPC-based Macs.

On the other side there are some million Firefox users.

Don’t get me wrong. I’d say that 10,000 is enough to keep the developement
going, and I’m very very grateful and happy that Cameron Kaiser and Floodgap
Systems is doing all the work. I love the idea of having an AltiVec-optimized
WebM engine on my PowerMac, and the faster JavaScript interpreter, which makes
me wonder where it has been all these years before TenFourFox!

Version 9.0 is current, you should update immediately as it closes a few

I can't understand your concern. Am I missing something?

Number of download seems increasing to me.
Considering only the "RC/final" 4 versions (G3, G4x2, G5):
TFF 4.0.1 = 19904
TFF 7.0 = 20703
TFF 8.0 = 22334

I didn't consider TFF 9, because it's still "work in progress".
DL numbers seem going up, though.

I have/had the exact one too. But I upgraded the processor. The 733 MHz model
lacks level 2 cache, which makes it really slow compared to the 733 MHz
version of the G4 Digital Audio.

I’d recommend getting a used processor module (+ heatsink) of the Dual-800 MHz
or even the Dual-1 GHz version. Alternatively a third party upgrade will help
a lot.

Even on 10.4 the QS-733 felt significantly slower than the MDD-Dual-1-GHz.

> I'm writing this because a friend said i was "crazy" just beacuse i
> use such an old mac for the "everyday use".

I’m a crazy person when it comes to answering your question: am I still using
an old G4?

Well, I've got a lot of G4s, two G5s and one G3. And what do I use mostly?
The G3!

I got the slowest and oldest of them all running Tiger, Microsoft Office (which
just rocks compared to LibreOffice; I don’t know much about iWork) and
TenFourFox for the internet. I don’t actually use YouTube on it thou. Wouldn’t
work anyway.

I also occasionally use a G4 Cube which I plan to upgrade: a GeForce 6200
graphics card maybe, but I’d loose compatibility for the older Mac OSes. I’ll
definitely upgrade the single 450 MHz processor in favour of a Dual-500 MHz
module that I already have tested in one of my G4 towers.

What else… I now used one of the G5s a lot. I found that YouTube works great
using TenFourFox and WebM/html5. It’s got some issues with the fans thou.

Crazy? Just a matter of perspective. If you can still do with it what you want
to do with it, why on earth should that be crazy?

I ran Linux on my G4 MDD Dual-1 GHz at first. It was great, but I eventually
went for a newer G5 to replace it, which ended in a desaster—just two words:
hardware support.

> So does anyone here is still using his old trusty G4?

I think the replies to your post answer it well. There are still people out
there that keep their Power Macs running.

I don’t want to fall into a negative mood here, but still I find it importaint
to point out an observation of mine that made me think that, sadly, these
times are going to end soon: look at the download figures of TenFourFox. This
will give you a good idea of how many of “us” are still out there…

It has 2 Gig RAM and runs OS X 10.5.8

Prior to that I ran a Quicksilver with maxxed out RAM and OS X 10.4.11
I upgraded due to a need for more RAM and the ability to add more HDs
The quicker speed was also a factor

Prior to that was a B&W GW (a Smurf)

I routinely use a MDD G4 with dual CPUs. I do CAD work and software
development on it for embedded systems. It's not my main machine, that's a
MacBook Pro. Many days I use the G4 more than the MBP. I don't watch streaming
video on it but I do watch mp4 video files on it. And when I've compiled the
code I'm working on I use a G3 Pismo to download it to the MicroController I'm
working on.

Besides CAD and editing / compiling I use the usual web browsing, database,
word processing, spreadsheet, etc. applications on it.

My household fileserver is a G4 QuickSilver with a SATA card and about 2Tb of
storage.

Yes, G4s are still quite viable. As to being crazy, I can't say but there is
nothing wrong with using a G4 for daily use.

Your English is great!

Everyday use is exactly what older computers are great for. Email,
Internet surfing, word processing, most YouTube (with the right
tricks), there is nothing they won't do.

The kind of people who say that is usually the kind of people who
won't watch a Fellini movie because it's "old"...

Ciao,

Felix

Crazy? You'd be crazy only if it didn't do what you needed and made
you miserable. (Which certainly makes the case for most windows users,
but I digress.)

I still have my MDD G4s and they're very useful. They still rip DVDs,
browse the web, transcode video to work on my TiVo, and run iTunes to
load my iPod.
As long as it works, be happy.

By the way, have a plan for when it fails. At some point, the power
supply will die and you'll want to transfer files to a new machine. I
have 5 G4s in the house, 2 have died so far.

I had dual 1000 Mhz G4. Installed Mac OS Server 10.5. Good backup server
for my other macs with its SATA card and SATA discs. Sometimes i even use
it for DVD Burning, iMovie simple movies and surfing. Even i watch some
online TV on it. Other than its wind sound it is good to work with.

I used (and still am using) my PowerMac G4 MDD (1,25 Ghz) for (amateur)
mathematical research, along with one other Core i5 computer. It certainly
still is useful.

I am currently using a g4 MDD dual 867mhz OS 10.5 and I have no issues
with it. I also have a g4 DA dual 533 mhz that I use on occasion. I
say if the computer meets your needs, then use it.

Your English is very good! If it works for you, tell them to blow off. ;^)

G4 MDD Dual 1.0GHz (10.4.11) here is barely adequate, have to continually
change my YouTube resolution to 360, but it works fine for Word and most other
things. I plan on upgrading, but only because I feel its limitations. If you
don't, ignore those 'other' folks. ;^)
