Re: New SD camera card reader

2009-12-31 Thread Michael G.M.
Hello again, Stewie-
Well, I got one of those SD card readers. I works fine in OS 9 X.
Took a month to get it though. From Hong Kong. Good deal, cheap.

These things seem to be about the cheapest cheepo-built peripheral
I've ever shopped for. Can I get some recommendations for shopping for

Oh, I'll use it for Mac OS 9 and X too!

  Thank you!

RE: New SD camera card reader

2009-11-26 Thread Stewie de Young

Well I have a USB2.0 hub on my desk and when I want to download photos from my
camera I just take the SD card out , insert it into one end of this little
reader and then plug the USB end of the reader into any spare slot of the hub.
My hub has vertical slots so the width is not a problem.
Like I said before - fast, easy and cheap.

Thank you both for the fast replies! Got me thinking anyway!
I don't think I'd prefer that flash drive style SD reader.
There's some nice multi card hubs at macsales I've been eying. It also
 includes a USB hub.
I dunno. I'll think about it. I have these USB PCI slots I've invested
in and I don't think the flash drive style would work well, it would
probably take up two slots in width. Does it?

 Thanks!

Re: New SD camera card reader

2009-11-26 Thread Stanton Mitrany
I also have one of these Converter Drive units of the Digital
Concepts brand, which reads and writes both SD and MMC cards. It's
double the width of a USB slot (when there are several in series) but
it's offset to one side in order to take up only one slot's utility if
it's placed at the end of a series of USB slots. It costs either $0.99
or $1.99 at MicroCenter stores (possibly also at www.microcenter.com
also) and has worked fine for me for almost a year.

Actually, I purchased a dozen of these tiny units, and have given them
to family and friends as a useful gift. No one has mentioned any
shortcomings with their use. They are USB 2.0 (fast) units.

Re: New SD camera card reader

2009-11-25 Thread Wtob327
I picked up the new SanDisk Image Mate All In One a few months ago after
reading about it in the Shutterbug Magazine to replace my older, clunkier,
San Disk reader. This one, which is about: 3/8 thick x 1 1/2 wide x 4 or
5 high and comes in two parts, the reader and a tiny three prong base,
was supposed to be ergonomically designed, space efficient, and ascetically
pleasing...and oh yeah, faster too on the data transfer side of things
according to that and other reviews.

Well, the 2 part unit spends more time separating with the reader falling
down onto the floor instead of sitting on the desk...the reader, which
attaches magnetically to the 3 prong base...refuses to stay attachedvery
unstable and falls apart if the desk is bumped due to the very weak
magnet...always thought for some reason that magnets adversely affected disks,
cards, etc! Maybe why it's so weak?

This is the second unit...the first went back to SanDisk to be traded
out(after the store refused to take it back...some off the wall policy...never
bought from them again) when the different card slot tolerances were so far
off that NO CF card would fit the slot, nor would an SDHC! This one feels
like the cheap plastic casing is about to separate every time I push in or
pull out a card! It is fast though in comparison to my old one, which
still works, very slowly in comparisonand is much bulkier, tooand
SOLID, both in build feel and stability on the desk (if you bump it or have
any
contact of any sort with it, it just sits there refusing to fall apart).

So, is it faster that other readers Yes. Is it sturdy No, it has
a very cheap feel to it. Is it affordable About $32.00 + Tx. Is it
a good buy??? Subjective. Only fully appreciated by the user who's into
grinding (from the prongs going in and out of the CF Card holes and the
plastic to card contact) sensations like those experienced from manually
focusing a camera lens at the beach after it was dropped in the sand.

Note: Not a lot of choices at Office Supply storestry a Micro Center,
Frye's (at your own risk...Caveat Emptor!!) or
