I was able to format this drive through the USB port. It is 1.8 TB in size 
and I was able to copy and write files to it.

The computer won't wake up from sleep, and hangs on reboot.

I think I am going to move to plan C and get an Intel

No 'hacks' are needed for USB or FireWire drives, the limit is purely
on the internal IDE controller,
With an external drive your only limitations are what is imposed by
the chipset in the enclosure, with modern enclosures there is no
problem using 6TB drives on your DA, the same applies if you use a PCI
SATA card internally, you are only limited by the cards chipset /
firmware.
so to reiterate, the only time you are limited to 128GB is when you
are connecting to the INTERNAL (on-board) IDE cable.

My shop had four G4 DAs, and all supported > 128 GB (actual capacity is
131,072).

You may use HD Speedtools, but that is an extension, and is only available
after booting has been successfully completed.

You may use the Open Firmware hack, and that is available at all times as
it is "persistently" added to the boot ROM.

Lookup the O.F. hack in the usual places, and you will probably find
several versions of it, at least one of which will get the job done.

I say "persistent", as the code required to support > 128 GB [ * ] is
actually added to the writable portion of the boot ROM.

It is deleted whenever you do an O.F. reset (and which erases any such
additions to O.F.).

With the MDD machines, the > 128 GB code was permanently in the boot ROM,
and cannot be deleted.


[ * ] Drives which are <= 128 GB send a single parameter block to the
drive. Drives which are > 128 GB send two parameter blocks, the first of
which has the low-order block IDs, and the second of which has the
high-order block IDs.

The O.F. hack enables sending the second parameter block for those cases
where two parameter blocks are expected. The ROM is actually capable of
sending the second parameter block, but it is inhibited from doing so on
DAs and earlier models.

Without the O.F. hack, only one parameter block is sent, irrespective of
the capacity of the drive, and which can lead to some rather strange
results as the block ID which the drive sees is really the "MOD 131072"
function applied to the actual block ID.

BTW, there ARE tricks to overcome that 128 GB limits. Here is the one I used
back in my G4 days:

I think the main difference is, some formats allow booting and others do
not.
If you want to boot from that disk, choose "Mac OS Extended".
"Ms-Dos" is good for an external drive that you connect to multiple devices,
both Macs and PCs.

If you report the 4 different options Disk Utility gave you, I could say
more (I'm currently on an Intel iMac, so I go from memory here).

You may need to subdivide the drive into smaller volumes depending on 
what the capabilities are of the G4 firmware and the version of Mac OS 
you are running.  When formatting it's important to check the bootable 
box.  I'd look all the details up but you can do that yourself.

WD My Book 2TB won't play nice

I tried to expand my TiVo. I got a 2TB WD My Book drive which turned out to 
be USB 3.0. It won't work with my TiVo Premire. As the TiVo wants an eSata 
drive.
I have had the model number for this eSata drive for quite some time, but
