Re: What was the last Mac to natively run OS 9?

2010-05-15 Thread JoeTaxpayer
The G4 MDD runs leopard very nicely. (I have both the 1.25, 1.42)
However Snow needs Intel chips, so for me, this is the highest OS I
can run. It will boot into OS9, but I've not needed to do that in a
long time.

Re: What was the last Mac to natively run OS 9?

Subject: What was the last Mac to natively run OS 9?

From:coolr...@comcast.net

The subject pretty much asks the question. Also, which Mac last
 shipped with OS9? Wad it a G4? G3?

That question caused some confusion around here. So I feel I should also write
what I (think I) know.

ABOUT ME:
I'm with Power Macs for about 2½ years now, so I wasn't around when what you
ask actually took place. But I went very much into this OS 9 thing because I
wanted to get a running configuration of OS 9 on my Macs as well, so I think I
know a little bit about it. So:

ABOUT THE QUESTION:
The last Mac that SHIPPED with Mac OS 9 was the MDD 2003 1.25 GHz (Single) –
purely due to demand, since the FW800 (and all G5s) cannot boot OS 9 anymore
and the only way to get OS 9 was Classic ever since. Well, ever since until
Leopard came out… :-)

At least the QS2002 and the MDDs (including the MDD 2003) shipped with a
special version of Mac OS 9.
The last model to support a retail version of Mac OS 9 is the original QS from
2001. All later models require a special version – the one they shipped with.

That said, I'm not sure if these models (up to the QS) actually shipped with
Mac OS 9 at all – since any retail version of Mac OS 9 can be installed at any
time (e.g. if Mac OS X is already installed).

On the other hand an included version of Mac OS 9 for a specific model, e.g.
the G4 AGP, cannot be installed on another model. :-(

Before that Apple startet to include a version of Mac OS X (10.0 or 10.1) with
a default installation of Mac OS 8.5+ – e.g. the QS G4 (original 2001) I've
got shipped with Mac OS 9.2 and had Mac OS X 10.0.4 included (for early
adopters?) – sadly the discs where vanished when I got it two years ago.

I hope that more or less answers the question.
And, I sure hope I'm right… you never know :-)

Cheers,
Andreas aka Mac User #330250

Re: What was the last Mac to natively run OS 9?

2010-05-15 Thread t...@io.com
I haven't seen the iMac discussed, although I may have overlooked
it.

The last iMac to boot into OS9 was an iLamp. The G4/800 MHz, 17 LCD
model and 15 LCD models.

There was a nearly identical 17 iLamp model which does not boot OS9.

The one that does is modelM8812LL/A. It shipped with an 80.0 GB
hard drive and NVIDIA GeForce4 MX graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM
(AGP 2X support).

The 17 iMac which does not boot OS9 is model M9105LL/A. It shipped
with a 60.0 GB and NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics with 32 MB of DDR SDRAM
(AGP 2X support).

The two machines are very difficult to tell apart.

Everymac.com has the details, of course.

From what I've read, the special version of OS9 that the MDDs needed
was really a matter of having the proper MacOS ROM file installed in
the OS9 system folder. If this is incorrect, I'd love to read other
details. One of my back-burner projects (too many hobbies) is to get
the two MDDs in the house booting OS9 reliably. They're both
400Mbps Firewire models and I've only worked on one of them so far
(probably more than a year ago). Some nice people sent me some disks
which I really need to experiment with.Fish. Cat. Vegetable
garden. Eight-year-old. Work. Electronics. Homeowning. Sigh.

2010-05-14 Thread Jason Brown
I think he means natively BOOT OS 9. There are a couple of machines, and
correct me if I am wrong on this. But the newest machine that will BOOT OS 9
would be the MDD based G4 powermac with standard Airport. The Airport Extreme
model will not booth OS 9 and even on the one with the standard Airport card,
it requires the model specific OS 9. Same goes for the eMac, some of which will
boot OS 9, but I know the 1.42 GHz model will not. The Quicksilver will install
off just a standard retail OS 9 disk and is a good machine. This may be your
sweet spot for OS 9. You can pick up a Quicksilver 2002 model for a decent
price these days. If you have any questions, please let me know.

The Apple Power Macintosh G4/1.25 (MDD 2003) ( M9145LL/A )intro'd June 23,2003

can boot into OS9
It is a re-released version of the Power Macintosh G4/1.25 DP (MDD) (M8573LL/A)
-- due to demand from users who still needed to boot MacOS 9 -- but configured,
by default, with a single processor released on June 23, 2003 and discontinued
on June 9, 2004 .
This was a cheapie version with a single processor, less RAM, a smaller hard
drive, and a
DVD-ROM/CD-RW Combo drive instead of a DVD-R/CD-RW SuperDrive. It
also sold for a much lower price, US$1299 instead of US$3299.

I'm not 100% sure why some of these can't boot into OS9 but I would hazard a
guess that it is a problem of the logicboard and the OS not being able to
recognise FW800 in OS9.

After the G5's came out, Apple released a revised MDD model that booted into a
special-for-this-model-only version of OS 9.2.2.

Re: What was the last Mac to natively run OS 9?

2010-05-13 Thread Richard Gerome

Are you asking when the last computer came out with ONLY OS 9 without OS
10??? Or when they stopped putting OS 9 in them??? If it is the last with only
OS 9 I would have to say maybe the end of 2000, because this is when I got it
for my Clamshell when it first came out it was OS 10 and the disc I got didn't
have a name like Puma or Jaguar...

2010-05-13 Thread Richard Gerome

I made a mistake it was the end of 2001 I got that OS 10 disc... So I would
have to say the G3 iBooks and iMacs were the last to just come with OS 9 (or
somewhere in the middle of the G3's before the G4's) then I think they started
to come dual boot 9 and 10 with Classic after that but I couldn't tell you what
models???
