I've used a few Initio chipset FW enclosures and they've always booted
for me. I think this is a problem with the clone, I've also had a
number of CCC clones be non-bootable. I'm not sure what the problem
was, I repeated the clone and they always worked the 2nd time.

2009-01-11 Thread yawg

Hi,

I have three external Firewire drives, one with an Oxford-controller
that always boots fine, there is a Tiger clone on that disk now.

My other two have Initio-controllers and used to boot my Panther
clones OK but lost that ability somehow lately, I don't know why. I
always use CCC for cloning, the older version for my Panther clones
and the newer version for Tiger. All three have no capacity limit
AFAIK.

I like the Diginote (made by CoolerMaster) Initio-enclosures a lot
though. No fiddling with little screws, no fan but good cooling, nice
look and - last not least - real cheap.

Regards, Jörg.

No experience with the Neptune. You might ask OWC, too?

I have one of these (linked below) for IDE drives, and with moderate
use, have had no problems with it. Currently have a 750GB Seagate in
it for backup purposes: backup off my home network as a FW drive off
my Quicksilver. It looks like they have FW800 ones now instead of
400? It's power supply is external as Ralph pointed out:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MEFW911UPLOB/

The all newer Aluminum ones look like they may dissipate heat well.
The Elite Pro ones mentioned above are covered with clear plastic,
which I have questioned as to their heat release ability ... but they
seem to work ok with moderate use. My 2 cents worth ...

I have booted off the one I bought ... worked well. Just tested the
Cold Boot-OPT, and the external drive showed up as one of the
options, and it booted fine off my QS.

Howdy,
It should work well with the Mac and it looks OK. I see that it is
designed for IDE drives. I'd look for a case that can handle sata
drives, unless you had particular IDE drives you want to use. IDE
drives may be hard to find in a couple of years.
I personally like cases that are a little bigger and have a built in
power supply. But, that is my taste and yours may differ.
Have a good day,
Ralph

It's always a crapshoot on cheap cases with unknown chipsets. Perhaps
you can dig around the web and find what chipsets these use. I've had
really bad luck with generic dual FW400/USB2 cases. Normally I get one
with an Oxford chipset for the Firewire, but then the USB 2.0 has not
worked at all. I've had at least two different cases with Oxford
Firewire chipsets (which always work perfect for me), that have had
completely non-functional USB 2.0. One had the ALi M5621 chipset. One
had other brand, perhaps Prolific that didn't work for me. OWC has
models guaranteed to work with Macs.

Yes. Some older Firewire enclosures (pre-2003) have the 128GB limit,
but all modern ones are not limited. The newest enclosures are made
for SATA HDs but are much more expensive than the older ones that use
PATA HDs unless you buy an OEM external combo unit. A few PATA
