Another option could be a page on trac?

First, I'm not a gajim developer, I just poke to code that runs on my

I agree that DVCS is better. However, I prefer git (first, it seems to
have faster response, second, I know it much better). I guess git is
more familiar to much more developers than hg. Psi used darcs for a
while and they found out it is a problem to some of the potential
developers. But as I say, I'm not a developer of gajim, so do not take
 this as a vote, please.

I *STRONGLY* disagree. Ever tried to work with SVN when you're in a
train with your laptop, without any WLAN? You're screwed then. With
mercurial, no problem at all. Just commit offline and push (and merge,
if needed) when you come online again, no problem at all. With svn, you
can't work offline. So, centralized VCS are *BAD*, *BAD* and *BAD*!

No if you want to look it up, you're free to do so. :) Yann won't copy paste
fsf docs cause everyone here knows fsf.

And as it's difficult to upgrade from GPL V2 to V3, we'd like to release
under V3 *or any later version* so that next version of GPL will be used
  without having to ask everyone.

I agree with the upgrade to GPL v3, not that I think that's actually
needed or useful, but I absolutely *disagree* to any later version.
I'll never agree to license that doesn't exists yet (and that's why gajim
was GPL v2 only in the first place)

I agree with you on the or later being too vague, too general but in legal
terms it's better than only gplv3 especially because it makes it easier to
switch to gplv4 (after 10 years..) and to gplv5 (after 15-20 years). We
don't know of course what FLOSS and Gajim will be in the next 5 years so..

Moreover the more developers hack, the less easier it gets to update to v4
v5 etc.. But if we don't then we may lose compatibility (well... officialy
that).

Google on GPL or later for more.

Anyways, good to see you respond.

I just re-read this XEP, and here is what is written:

In order for a user to modify his or her nickname and notify contacts
of that change, it is RECOMMENDED for clients to use Personal Eventing
 via Pubsub [15] (a.k.a. PEP).

so we need to support PEP ...

XEP says that if we don't support PEP we can use pubsub, and if we don't
support pubsub, we can use a message:

 message from='' to=''
   nick xmlns='http://jabber.org/protocol/nick'NEW_NICK/nick
 /message

this solution sounds ugly as we have to send a message to ALL our
contacts. So we should implement PEP for that.

This is an interesting patch, and a good way to do the MSN way for
nickname: contact choose the nick he wants others see.

 there are 2 problems:
 - keep contact.vcard takes too much memory. vcard can be a big object as
it contains avatar. A solution could be to have a shown_nick field that
is filled the way you explained each time we get the vcard.
 - there are too many vcard query. I understand that we need to do some
query because we are not advised when our contacts change their nick. So
there is no other way than querying vcard sometimes. But to improve
that, we can avoid querying vcard when a nick is already set by the user
for this contact. But asking the vcard on each status change is maybe
too much. I'll have a talk with Peter about an eventual XEP for
spreading new nickname when we change it.

there is currently no way to do that, nor any effort in that direction.
So you can do that if you want. I think a button in vcard window at the

the forced one in roster. tooltip should IMHO show only one. the

wow. I guess http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=74620 makes it
clear it is not us.

Thanks for finding out. Well GTK+ was always like that, and especially
in Windows it is more untested. The problem is not if GTK was better
when Gajim started, but if there is a real alternative open source
solution for a stable and extensively tested GUI. And there isn't,
because open source does not give enough money back for such a
mechanism to exist.

GTK in Linux just works so it's acceptable allover as such.

if you are a python fan, then the best GUI for Windows is wxPython and
you can have a look at IronPython speaking to MS SWF (.NET).

Re: [Gajim-devel] 0.11 release

2006-12-12 Thread Nikos Kouremenos
I think this should be stated in the Changelog (and in www.gajim.org)
so we can finally fix the gajim sucks on windows feeling

  Hi all,

Has the stability of the windows version improved? I had to stop
using gajim on windows because it crashed several times a day. My

the pb was with trayicon of pywin32 which had a mem leak. we now use
GTK2.10 status icon, and it seems to be much more stable.

Re: [Gajim-devel] suggestion for Avatar dialog

2006-10-10 Thread Nikos Kouremenos
On 10/10/06, Markus Lutzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Now the dialog for Avatar information can be accessed through two
different ways (names can vary because I translated it from my German
 installation):
 (1) menu-accounts-tab personal information-button edit personal details
 (2) menu-profile,Avatar-specific account

I would suggest to understand avatar information as part of a particular
account. Therefore it would be easier to use and to understand to drop
path (2) and change path (1) to menu-accounts-tabs with personal
 information.
I don't understand the new path you propose.

also it's clear with way (2) that avatar is account specific. and (2)
is more like a shortcut.

This would result in a consistent account dialog with tabs
for account, general, connection, OpenPGP, personal details, work,
about. The button which is required now to be pressed separates the
avatar information from the account which does not make any sense to me
(concept) and requires an additional click by the user (usability).
(note: To drop the upload and fetch button of personal information was
agreed in a discussion on this list before.) What do you think about this?
If noone ticketed it, then you should. Ticketing is the way for a
request or bug report not to be forgotten.

[Gajim-devel] Gajim Patch for 0.9.1 to fix notification-daemon 0.3.x Traceback

2006-04-01 Thread Nikos Kouremenos
This is for package maintainers that their distro also offers (or is
likely that user has) 0.3.x version of notification-daemon.

In that version, they break their API. So for Gajim to work under 0.3
the attached patch is needed. Please note that with this patch, Gajim
continues to work ok with 0.2.x version of notification-daemon.

patch adopted to 0.9.1 (from svn) by Dawid Gajownik (FC packager), thanks Dawid.

Thank you for your attention

PS. packagers maintainers are encouraged to subscribe to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] which will contain such announcements as well
announcements on releases and pre-releases. This means that they can
follow that information, without traffic about devel.

Re: [Gajim-devel] Meta-Buddy proposal

2006-03-27 Thread Nikos Kouremenos
I have to saiy I haven't use Gaim2 and a lot here haven't. so when you
refer to Gaim2 please be more detailed.

Now about the auto magic, it could be good but it could be also bad.
those automations also spit a helper app that expalins what happend
and says how to turn this off (but then again we're not word
processor:P)

Why I think this automation shouldn't be done in Gajim is this:
I have Paul McCartney and I want to add Paul Thomas Andreson in my roster.

McCartney I have him as 'paul'

so I go to add PTA as 'paul' too. I add him (I dont remember or don't
care that I have alreayd a paul). result: PTA is hidden under
McCartney music_geeknessand I go listen to: How do you sleep of
Lennon. /music_geekness

unless I miss sth, I don't think we should do this automation. User
can just drag and drop two pauls and we're sure he's surpised by
automatiions.

  Hi!
I propose to automatic create a virtual Meta-Buddy (or meta-contact)
when a buddy has the same alias (name) and are in the same group. With
that people can have the same person accessible for different JID's and
in the same place inside the roaster. And by other hand the meta-buddy's
are automatically adopted and also does not need to create some strange
roaster structure. I haven't researched for possible extensions for
roaster but I think that normally people does not have 2 different
persons with the same alias (name) and in the same group, and when it
was is because it is the same person with different jids.

  Thanks!

This is realy nice idea !!

There should be some way to determine most usable contact to be used as
default (when Metta-Buddy is selected -- for example: double clicked
when opening chat). This wants simple and genial idea, how make roaster
  behaviour.

We can use as first idea the usage of Meta-Contacts of Gaim 2.0, it has
a good idea too to add some functionality for start chatting directly to
a specified resource instead of using the default priorities.

For automatic usage could be implemented as in jabber by checking the
state, the priority, and time since last iq send as priorities while
check between 2 different jid's. But as said the possibility to send to
specified resource could be also for specified jid inside the meta-buddy
 also.
