I know that this is an old thread, but I was just googling this problem

 solution, or rather, a workaround.

It seems to relate to the file proxies that are defined by default for
an account. Going into the advanced configuration editor and removing
those proxies seems to remove this problem.

As for what the root cause is, I don't know.

indeed I already saw that proxy.unstable.nl does that. It's because they
send wrong XML stanza. This problem is known and a solution is being
found to fix that in xmpppy.

When looking in the log of the server, there is an entry that the JID is
  too long.

  Anybody has experienced something similar?

What is the limitation on the JID length? Is that a limitation of the
  Wildfire server?

I posted the full error message from the server below.

  Thanks for any help.

I never heard such a problem. is you jid really long?

  Not that I know of.

what do Gajim logs show? (run gajim -v in a console to see them)

I attached the log until the client was connected.

This is a 0.11 client under Linux.

It does not show any obvious errors to me, but I am not an expert.

You can see that the client logs in two times. I did not find a reason
why it got disconnected after the first try.

  Cheers,

  Guenter

indeed in the middle of your log, gajim gets a /stream:stream without
any reason. This sounds like a server pb, as it work on other wildfire
servers. Have you tried with other clients ? do you see something
 different in logs ?

I get exactly the same when connecting to myjabber.net server, which
uses Wildfire. I receive all contacts information and stay online for
about a second, then the log shows a /stream:stream line and I am
disconnected. After that, the process automatically starts again and I
can connect without any problem.

I have tried to connect to another account in a different server with
Gajim and there is no problem connecting.

I had the same problem with gajim on the 3.0.1 wildfire server. Also
used earlier versions of gajim and had that problem.

I just tried using spark, the client that comes from the same company
that develops wildfire, and that works fine.

I've seen the same thing with gajim on windows with a linux-based
wildfire server. I'm the only one here that uses gajim, so I've
(sadly) just ignored it.
