I myself wonder how the ESP Softworks/Draconis's games work. I'm not even
sure if they'd run on vista. By the way, I was gonna say
Hi Thomas,
No, I definitely will not be repackaging all of my games simply because you
have chosen not to install the winkit.zip file and install the games in a
manner that they were not designed to be.

Hi Shaun,
The winkit.zip install should give you everything that you need to run my games.
Please don't believe the person that has been saying otherwise. It is not true.

Why would you want to create special directories for each game? I see no
reason really.

Hi
Hi Jim and all,
First, my apologies for any confusion I have made here regarding any
compatibility with Jim's games and Vista. Now, I shall explain how this
confusion came about just so everyone knows where I am coming from.
Generally speaking the DirectX 8 VB libs as well as the Visual Basic 6
Hi Jim,
I can confirm that myself. The Winkit package does indeed solve
compatibility issues as far as I cansee.
However, generally speaking those VB libs should really go in
c:\Windows\System32
where all VB 6 games can access them rather than being in the local
directory where just your games
Hi Jim,
No problem. I'm aware of what needs to be installed to the System32
directory so I'll simply install the libs I need there, and run the
games according to the way I like installing them.
However, officially for the Vista compatibility chart I'll update it to
reflect the installation of
Hi Willem,
Honestly, I am a bit of a neet freek when it comes to my computer and
files. For example, take the Windows start menu. If you install
everything to the default location your start menu will eventually
become an unsorted mess with 40 or 50 pull down menus.
Ok, in my start menu I have

Ah, I see. Yes, for XP users that is definately the case. Though, if I
upgrade to .Net 3.0 the .Net extra installation isn't necessary since
.Net 3.0 is a core part of Vista.
Which is really one of the main reasons I picked .Net as my platform

Hi Thomas,
Thank you, but my point was that allot of people need to down load and
install other software to be able to play your games. Which seems now to
be the complaint

Hi Shaun,
Well, most of the files we are talking about should go in

which is the primary system folder for every Windows os since 95B.

Hi Michael,
All the libraries you need go in
c:\Windows\System32
which has been the default system directory for years now. Microsoft
hasn't changed that in the 32 byt version of Vista. In the newer 64 byt
version there is a
c:\Windows\System64
directory, but most users probably don't have this
Hi Michael,
May I ask, have you tried to play my games on your Vista computer? I have had
others tell me that the winkit.zip and the Life game run out of the box. The
only problem that they have had is the self extracting WinZip files.

Hi Thomas,
Please correct me if I am wrong, but you did not have a problem with the
winkit.zip install but rather the self extracting zip files right? And as you
yourself have mentioned the end user needs not nor actually ever knows what
language a game or program is written in? Truthfully
Hi Jim,
In actuality I had two problems with your games under Vista, but there
is a pretty easy solution for both of them.
First, as you pointed out I had issues with the self extractor
installation of the game. To install your games you need to run them
using full admin rights. I have no
Hi Jim,
One more note. You are right most of the time a end user doesn't need to
know the language the game is written in, but they will need to know the
dependancies required to run it.
In this case Visual Basic 6 requires allot of libraries which are going
to be canned very shortly. The
Hi Thomas,
Thank you for permission to use your instructions to tell Vista how to run a
self extracting zip file.
My winkit.zip file includes ASYCFILT.DLL COMCAT.DLL
dx8vb.dll gamemenu.BAT gamemenu.exe kitchensinc.DDF
life.exe life.txt liferecs.txt
Hi Thomas,
One other thing, I can not run any of your games because I do not have the most
current net frame work that your games require.
