Yeah, for the most part I believe the DVD games are like choose your own
adventure books on disk. I once had the entire collection of choose your
own adventure books, and they were pretty fun.

The DVD games are simply the same kind of games similar to those books
where you choose the story as you read. You get to a certain part and
then you are given a choice, to choose A turn to page X, to choose B,
turn to page Y. DVDs are a lot smarter about it, but it's basically the
same thing.

I find it very hard to imagine what a sidescroller dvd game would play like.
Other than multiple-choice trivia games, I would think you could do a
multiple-choice rpg pretty nicely on dvd. There's a company called Digital
Leisure which puts out a lot of the old classic laser disk games which
