Hi, Yeah, spiders do sound strange. They were effects James North made. I have ben on the lookout for something better, but haven't found anythingthat sounds, well, spiderish. As I was saying on the USA Games list Kate is good, but the new Scansoft voices that ship with Jaws would also be cool. Everett Elam wrote: I like the one you swiched to! God that game is killer! Hi Raul, Chucckle. Yeah, some of the ATT voices down right are terrible. I was thinking if some of us still want a Brittish accent for the game and avoid Audrey we could use Scansoft Karin which is a very clear and high quality sounding U.K. voice. It would have the flare of the original game, but a far higher quality voice than even Kate. Raul A. Gallegos wrote: Good points Tom. When I was thinking of sounding clearer I was not referring to the accent though. In my opinion, it's like some of the higher end frequencies are not there as much with the ATT natural voices. Hi Shaun, What you say is true, but there have been exceptions. For example in Redemption when the Duras sisters joined Commander Sela from the Romulan Empire in hopes of overthrowing the Klingon government. There is also the case in when the Die is Cast where the Cardassians and Romulans joined forces to attack the Dominion homeworld. So at least some of the time the enemies can cooperate, but that is very rare. shaun everiss wrote: would be cool if this does happen. Re: [Audyssey] Monty voices.
Hi Bryan, That is true. The Neospeech voices as well as the Scansoft voices sound allot more realistic and clearer than the ATT voices. Funny thing is is Neospeech and scansoft are totally synthetic speech where as ATT voices is based on real voice samples. I think the real voice samples is actually what kills the ATT voices, and makes them sound choppy. They can not adapt to changes in normal speech as well as the synthetic speech voices. Actually I believe Karen's an Australian voice. I do have a voice sample of her and wouldn't mind one bit using her with JAWS 7, assuming of course it would work. JAWS tends to have problems with Neospeach so I try not to use it. It'll load up and not talk the very first time I try it, then when I switch to Eloquence again and back to Sapi 5 it works. I believe that method should work regardless of whether extensions are showing, but thanks for the note. smile As far as the right windows key, I certainly don't want to cause any confusion, but most people I know, call that key the right windows key, rather than the applications key, and the other, the left windows key, so effectively, some keyboards would have two left windows keys on them. smile Am certainly not saying that you're wrong, and it may be a matter of people simply using an incorrect name for a key, no biggie. You will not be able to easily rename filenames including their extensions by doing what you describe below unless you have the show extensions option enabled in Windows. By default the extensions are hidden. However, if they are showing then your method which is very well written will work. Regarding the keyboard keys though. Most standard 104-key keyboards will have going from left to right the following keys: left-control, left-windows, left-alt, space bar, right alt, right windows, applications, right-control. So, the applications key is not the same as the right windows key. Now, I do have a keyboard which has only one windows key on the left, and on the right in place of it, there is just the applications key which is probably what you meant for this type of keyboard. I just wanted to clear this up to avoid any confusion. Also, it is called the applications key or the context key regardless of whether you use Jaws, Hal, Window-Eyes, Narrator, or nothing at all. smile. Pressing left or right turns you such, and if you hold the shift key down, left or right arrows cause you to strafe left or right respectively. I.E. face one direction but be walking left or right. [Audyssey] question about people going nomail
Hello everyone. Tom did an excellent job in describing how to go nomail using the web interface which I personally find the easier method. However there is an email method as well which I'll show next. To view or change your list settings you can do the following by sending an email to gamers-request.org. In the body of your message always start off by authenticating yourself with the line: set authenticate your list password Here you would replace the your list password with your real list password. The next line should have the line: set show which will return an email with your current list settings. If you want to change a list setting use the list setting with the word off. For example, to go no mail you would put: set delivery off So, the entire message would look something like this: To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: no subject today set authenticate mypassword set delivery off end The optional end command is just telling Mailman that you are done and to not try and process your signature, unless of course your signature starts with three dashes the way netiquette says it should smile. For all of this as you have seen, you need to know your list password. You should receive that every month automatically, however if you need to get it again, send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and in the body of the message simply put the word: password by itself. Again, you could put end or two dashes after, see the signature note above smile. Hope this helps. -- One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts. -- Psalms 145:4 Raul A. Gallegos ... IliwSsmc ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Moderator warning was I am an American
How about, if anyone wants to, debating it off list? Someone can start the debate by responding to an Email using, I think the keystroke is, control shift r. That sends a message to all members, but it sends it to them off list. Then, anyone who wants to join in can do so. Just a thought. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2006 4:21 AM Subject: [Audyssey] Moderator warning was I am an American Hi all, As comoderator I think whe should close this topic before we go to far down this path. It doesn't have anything to do with gaming, and illegal imigration happens to be one of those flamible topics of late. I'd love to debate this as well as the next guy, but this list is not the forem in which to do so. So please let us close down before this one gets started. Smile. Re: [Audyssey] Toshebas and gaming was Judgement Day
well for the record my laptop has a 40gb drive, a half working cdrw drive, and 512mb ram. Later on I added the headphones, mics, speakers, a 40gb hard drive and another external 320gb drive. I also added a dvd 2 layer writer which is now the main cd and dvd drive. My system is probably worth around 5000 with all the accesseries modules i grabbed for it. I also got a joystick I have never used and a mouse. My most receant additions were a 4 port usb module and a 7 port usb hub for non travel use with nice abilities. Also a digital recorder module. next year, i plan to upgrade all my screen readers so vista and other things can be supported. After that I won't be moving, except with free software upgrades and maybe shared upgrades to. My dream would be a laptop, high p4 intel m700 or an amd chipset because amd chips are really fast, 2gb ram, maybe an 80gb drive, an external sound card and midi interface. Modem, ethanet, infrared, and wireless maybe firewire support. I have enough hubs but to have heaps of ports is always nice, a 4gb or so flash card and a few more bits and bobs. Hey, I got a project 1 error. I was able to fix the problem It turns out that I had some codecs installed on the computer that was interacting with the sounds. When I put the codecs to the default settings, everything worked fine. I am using a desktop with xp home. Hi Liam, If I had my way I would use real human speech as well. Unfortunately, my voice is not that good sounding, and it is hard to find someone willing to sit down for ours and read off all the voice samples required for the game. Re: [Audyssey] right windows key, application key, or what?
Hi Raul and all, The key in question is most often called the context key and often is the application key. By no means is it a right windows key as my keyboard has two Window keys a left one and a right one. As for calling the Windows key a start menu key that again wouldn't be practical as the key has many more functions than just the start menu. Some examples is Windows-d to go to the desktop, Windows-r for the run dialog, Windows-m to minimize all Windows, Windows-Tab for the taskbar, Windows-E for Windows Explorer, and many more I can't even begin to list. Bottomline the context key or application key if you want to call it that is not a Windows key. Smile. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hi Damien, No, desktop systems are still quite less than most laptops. Most laptops cost twice as much as a desktop with equal features. I've hand built my own desktops in the past with the top-of-the-line everything for the price of some lower end notebooks. Although, that has been a while, and laptops and desktops have dropped in price since then. x-sight interactive wrote: lol that's pretty weird. why, do desktops seem to cost more then? hmm. i know with desktops you can get 500gb hard drive, 1gb or maybe even 2gb ram, 3ghz processors, etc, etc ... regards, damien ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Toshebas and gaming was Judgement Day
Hi, Yeah, that is right, and in addition to size most laptops have specially designed parts for that specific laptop. Take the motherboards. They are especially designed for that laptop case, and that style alone. Some parts like hard drives are pretty generic, and are a little more than desktop versions, but most everything else like the 15 inch wide screen display I needed to replace on mine cost me an arm and a leg. I could have had a 19 inch flat screen display for my desktop for much less. Raul A. Gallegos wrote: You mean, why do laptops cost more then? Hi Damien, You misunderstood what I meant. I hand built my desktop back in 2002, and it was pretty good for back then, but is lower end for now days. My laptop was made in 2005, and is in keeping with most of the newer laptops and desktops out there. Not has high-quality as one I could buy today, but definately newer and better than my older desktop. I haven't gotten around to buying a new motherboard, bigger hard drive, etc to upgrade my desktop to something much newer. x-sight interactive wrote: oh so laptops cost more than desktops? gee, just that tom said that his desktop's not as good as his laptop, which gave me the impression that a desktop cost more than a laptop. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Toshebas and gaming was Judgement Day
Hi, yeah, you could do that. The nice thing I have found with building your own desktop for say $600 is you can uupgrade what you want when you want. Like for example most of the gear on my desktop has been updated now and then. The only thing that is lagging behind is the processor speed. I can buy just a motherboard, processor, and a big stick of mem, like top of the line, for $600, and have a super machine. I have like a 100 GB drive. I don't need anything larger. All I need is speed and mem. Raul A. Gallegos wrote: Not at all. I can easily put together a desktop machine for under $600, but if I wanted a laptop with the same specs, it would cost me over $1000. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hmmm, I'm probably getting my boppit versions mixed up. As well as the standard boppit, last christmas my mum bought me a Boppit version that goes over 250. That version only has Boppit, twist it and pull it, but can have different voices and go over 250 - up to 800 as I said. Re: [Audyssey] Racing points
Hi Che, As it happens this is something I can help you out with. USA Raceway is basing it's own racing points on the official NASCAR racing points system, and in a nutshell this is how it works. Each race of the seson is worth 180 total points. Plus you can get additional bonus points with a maximum of 190 points per race. So let's say you and I are racing in Railracer. You win the race. You automatically will be awarded 180 points for being the big cheese for winning the race. Since I was the runner up I would recieve 170 points. From that point on you deduct 5 points off for position. Third place gets 165, fourth place gets 160, fifth 155, and so on. Now, there are bonus points you can get which will help your scoring in the race. If you lead one lap you can get 5 extra pointz added to your over all score. If you lead the most laps out of all the racers you can get an additional 5 points added to your score. So if you lead at least one lap and lead the most laps add 10 to the over all score. If you did this in our hypathetical Railracer race you get your 180 for winning, 5 for leading one lap, and 5 for leading the most laps. Now, finding out who is a champion. After 26 standard races the top 10 racers are chosen if they are in 400 points of the leader, and those 10 race the last races of the season to win the championship. Here is a list of scores for all 43 cars. 1st 180 2nd 170 3rd 165 4th 160 5th 155 6th 150 7th 146 8th 142 9th 138 10th 134 11th 130 12th 127 13th 124 14th 121 15th 118 16th 115 17th 112 18th 109 19th 106 20th 103 21st 100 22nd 97 23rd 94 24th 91 25th 88 26th 85 27th 82 28th 79 29th 76 30th 73 31st 70 32nd 67 33rd 64 34th 61 35th 58 36th 55 37th 52 38th 49 39th 46 40th 43 41st 40 42nd 37 43rd 34 Hope this helps. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Toshebas and gaming was Judgement Day
Hi, Yeah. Let's start stearing this topic back to gaming. Braille writers doen't have anything to do with gaming. Smile. shaun everiss wrote: not to mention that except for math our standard heavy braillers vertually have no place, there are electronic ones and some are as small as a palm top system. I remember when I was in college around 97 or so they wanted me to braille my answers up on the braille writer. I firmly told them no, and told them I'd type it up on a computer, or I wouldn't take the test. I got the computer. Grin. Everett Elam wrote: ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hi Shaun, mine has an AMD 64 chipset on it, and it really cranks. I was trying judgement day on it,it and my laptop really rocked with the game. Re: [Audyssey] Racing points
PS I just remembered a couple of extra rules to points. Usually, the racer who is leading the season gets an extra 5 points added to his total season score for being the leader. In addition, there are two races during the season, I can't remember off hand which ones, which are of no point value. However, the rest are worth the standard 180 points towards the championship. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Monty voices.
Hi, I think that is why Eloquence has lasted as long as it has as a software tts engine. For years Dectalk was the top cheese, but when Eloquence came along it became the most popular software TTS Engine of all time. Actually, when I prototype a game I actually use Eloquence as my prototyping voice. It says things right aalmost all the time, has a small footprint in wav files, is multilingual, and even the wav files seam more responcive. I've almost been tempted to use it in my games for those reasons alone, but I know many people don't like Eloquence. I for one do like the more realistic voices to, but Eloquence does the job easier. Re: [Audyssey] right windows key, application key, or what?
Hi Dark, I don't know of any official list of them, but here are a couple more I use to add to the list I already gave. Windows-f brings up the Windows find dialog, and Windows-h brings up the Windows help system. Oh yeah, and Windows-b will drop you right on the system tray no matter where you are. The Windows key shortcuts are super invaluable when you learn them you wonder how you did without. Why got to start and run when Windows-r from anywhere will take you there. Why go tot the start menu to run find when Windows-f from anywhere will open the dialog to run the find. If you want to land square on your taskbar no matter where you are Windows-tab and you are instantly taken there. BTW. I might add I amd doing this using Windows XP SP2. If you are using something else besides XP you will have to check and see if your Windows version supports those keys. I know some of them have been around since 95/98, and some are newer. I like eloquence only because its real fast. On hal I use orpheus1 and well thats ok. For the system voice I use mary. However eventhough its going to be slower I plan to attempt to switch by default to realspeak. Maybe I don't know.
