As far as I know, all versions of Directx are backwards compatible except
for 10.0 which isn't currently in use by any developers, anyways.

I like Monty so far. I had a bit of trouble getting it to work, I thought I
had .net framework 2.0 but I guess I didn't because it worked after I
downloaded and installed the .net framework 2.0from the usagames site. I
really like the game so far. I would also like a learn sounds option too,

Generally, you shouldn't need to overwrite anything. Just leave Directx as

No not all DirectX versions is completely backwards compatible. For
example DirectX 9 supports DirectX 7, 8, and 9.
DirectX 8.0 supported back to DirectX 6.
As far as DirectX 10 since it is Vista only I don't imagine it will be
widely supported for the near future, but there are a few

You need to be invited into a game; you can be on a server, but not be in a
game. Also, if the server is setup for it, when someone else enters you can
