Re: [Audyssey] Swamp podcast.

2012-10-24 Thread Scott Chesworth
Ah, but thinking about it, that's exactly why I took a break I think
Jon. It started to feel like a rince and repeat scenario, because even
though I was still small fry compared to some players, I had enough
rep to grab anything I might want in ridiculous quantities, the
novelty wore off of soloing missions, and aside from fuel for more
missions it didn't really matter anymore if I died because I could
afford to re-arm myself. There was the social scene that's developed
on Swamp of course, had plenty of fun chats on there, but I wasn't
ever the type of player to just sit in the safe zone nattering really.

This is why I'm looking forward to hardcore mode. That whole scrimping
and scraping to survive and clan faction thing is way more my thing. I
guess someone could argue that even before hardcore mode, there are
stats for pretty much everything, so maintaining those could be the
chalenge, but I economise and play a better game out of necessity as
opposed to any sense of pride in a set of numbers.

Lazy, lazy gamer hehe!

Windows XP does not have User Account Control. UAC was added in

[Audyssey] upgrading to Windows 8

2012-10-24 Thread Yohandy

Hey guys,
I know I posted about this a few months ago, but I feel I'll have no choice
but to upgrade to Windows 8. I'm running Windows Vista at the moment, but my
computers been acting up for a while now. slow downs, processes freeze etc.
I'd reinstall, but I lost the recovery discs, and I'm not about to pay
hundreds of bucks for a new disc. Since Windows 8 upgrades are only 40
bucks, that'll probably be my best bet. I know that new versions of jaws and
NVDA have been released that are more compatible with Windows 8. Have any of
you upgraded to these new versions, and are there any improvements? Anything
I should be aware of before I upgrade from Vista to 8? I'm using Windows
mail at the moment, and I heard 8 has no mail application. so is it possible
to somehow backup and use my email on that OS? Finally we get to gaming. Has
anyone tried running games on Windows 8, and does it work well? Should I
backup any files before I proceed? I'm quite nervous about performing this
upgrade, so any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Re: [Audyssey] swamp: mission thoughts

2012-10-24 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Aprone has mentioned that he has a couple of new mission types partially
developed, but due to increased troublemaker activity, he's had to shelve
their development in favor of security fixes.

Based on the interview he gave in the anniversary special (which you can
also find in the drop box folder, the new version is well under way, to the
point where he's testing a completely rewritten server end and has begun
implementing features that will allow him to more easily launch events such
as the dire swarm near the factory.

Hard core mode is a prominent feature in the update, or so he hopes. From
his description, missions in HC mode will have to be different as there will
be no reputation. Food becomes sort of the new currency in the HC economy.
It could be that we'll see missions to recover food directly.

Really, the interview is probably the best way to learn about the upcoming
things in Swamp.

Hi,

It sounds like you are asking for different missions, but that take
longer and with more of a story line then correct?

Because currently the missions can go either quite quickly or
relatively long. it just depends on how many you have join, and how
good those people are. I have heard of last man standing missions
lasting well over a half hour. also missions into warehouse 4 can take well
over an hour.

I do agree more missions with different styles than just collecting
crates would be great. But I don't have any suggestions. But if you do,
throw Aprone a message with the suggestion and as much detail as you can.

Also, there is a swamp folder being shared thru drop box. It has in it
4 maps you can play in off line mode. Sorry none of them have been
incorporated into multiplayer. But it does give you something else to try.

Or you can always create your own map and send it to aprone with your
ideas and suggestions.

Plus keep in mind a new version should be on the way soon. So it may
just contain some of your ideas in it. give it a look when it comes out
and go from there.

I'm finally getting back into swamp a bit, and more and more I'm
wishing we had longer missions. Not that we'd have to find more crates,
but that there was some kind of mission that would take over half an
hour to do instead of five to ten minutes. I'm not sure how this would
work; 150 crates isn't quite what I had in mind, but overall I'd like
to see something longer, perhaps with more of a story.

Any thoughts?

Re: [Audyssey] upgrading to Windows 8

2012-10-24 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Yohandy,

Let me assure you that there isn't any need to worry. A lot of the
things you are nervous about aren't going to be a big issue. So let's
see if I can clear up a few points for you here.

First, in terms of screen reader access the Jaws 14 beta and
Window-Eyes 8 beta both offer improved access to Windows 8, and I
don't think screen reader accessibility will be a big problem in the
long term. There are issues that could be improved but I'm sure they
will get taken care of fairly soon. Plus there are workarounds that
make the access issues not a big issue you can't get around.

Second, while Windows Mail doesn't ship with Windows 8 by default that
doesn't mean one does not exist. Its simply an extra download. If you
download and install Windows Live Essentials you will get Windows Live
Mail, which is a newer version of Outlook Express AKA Windows Mail, as
well as a number of other apps like Live Messenger for chat, Live
Writer for blogging, etc. In short, all the apps you know and love in
Vista are still around. They just need to be installed via Windows
Update etc. Plus there are alternative mail clients like Thunderbird
which I use myself.

Finally, as for running games under Windows 8 it is pretty much the
same as on Windows 7. If you want to play any games written in Visual
Basic 6 such as Jim Kitchens games install Winkit, disable User
Account Control, and you'll be fine. The only serious problem I've
had with Windows 8 is running old 16-bit Dos applications which are no
longer supported by the OS. However, the majority of accessible games
work fine provided you install any missing dependencies like the VB 6
runtimes which come with Winkit. The .NET 5 Framework comes with
Windows 8 so most games and apps written in .NET 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and
4.0 will run out of the box.

Cheers!
