Re: [Audyssey] about the beeps in quake
Hey Kara, it's not the hazard beeps but actual monster beeps. It's kind of weird. Anyway, I am getting wind for the hazards, and I don't think I have any beeps and boops left over except the going up and down stairs, and which way the slopes run. I have mellower versions of those, but they're definitely beeps and I can't think of a better way of showing direction than with those sounds. I also left in the crosshair beeps, because the enemy-bok, monster-bok and friend-bok files aren't always playing when something is in my sites. (I'm assuming that's the sounds of them in your sites anyway.) The other big thing i was seeking to change is the wall scrape sound. It's always a mono sound right in the center, and needs to be where the collission is occuring. As I said before though, my C skills leave much to be desired and I never could figure that one out. Gosh, I'm going to have to start getting back into this again I think. It still has so much untapped potential! I'll send my sources as soon as I remember which version is the right one. Now, I think a good accessible horse racing game should work like the mainstream horse racing games I had back in the 95/98 days. In those games you would pick a horse, and after the trumpets sounded you would use your up arrow key to run forward and your left and right keys to steer around curves and other horses. The spacebar would have your horse vault or jump over hurtles on the track. HI Thomas, so are you thinking of something like a SteepleChase or National Hunt Racing sort of idea where there are hurtles to jump? As you know, in the triple crown, there are no hurtles just straight up racing. :) I'd probably go for a couple of modes. perhaps a SteepleChase mode and standard racing mode. In the standard racing mode you would need to maneuver through other horses to get a better position and maintain it. Not quite sure how the gameplay would work just yet but that's the fun of it! :) Smiles, Cara :) --- View my Online Portfolio at: http://www.onemodelplace.com/CaraQuinn Follow me on Twitter! https://twitter.com/ModelCara On May 8, 2013, at 9:34 AM, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Cara, Well, when I played the Lighttech horse racing game a few years back I didn't' think it was all that great. You couldn't be more wrong. There is a huge amount of story in swamp. You should explore the maps and look at the quests. You should also look at the fanfiction competition, as well as take a look at the campaign creator. - Original Message - From: Devin Prater Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Some updates on what I'm up to,since I forget to keep audyssey in the loop. What I really want to see audio games go to is more MMO type things, or work with an already good MMO or other online RPG to make it accessible. I like MUD's, but honestly people are more into the video-game type role-playing stuff, I did like Swamp, but I never got into it much, not too much to explore, just shooting and fighting and stuff, and not much storyline as far as I saw. And I know much blind gamers seem to not care about a storyline but I do. Re: [Audyssey] Quake / 3D FPS games -was- Re: Mysteries oftheAncientsConsiderations
Honestly, I'm not entirely sure why it won't work. It's been about two years since I tried making it work. I got really excited for a while there with the release of the mapping language. I even made a few maps, which led me to the realization that big rooms didn't render well, in terms of sound. That kind of bummed me out, but hey. It's still fun. I'll maybe try to make it work again, because AQ was so much fun. I used to play with several friends. In case you or anyone else cares, I made maps for a few of the space ships from a mud called Miriani, and I also made other maps I can't remember well, including a map of two towers, connected by a middle room. That's the one that didn't render the sounds right, or maybe my netbook just couldn't handle it. I don't know. [Audyssey] Global Accessibility Awareness Day
It's Global Accessibility Awareness Day tomorrow, on May 9th. There are a few game accessibility related things going on for it, TIGA and IGDA-GASIG are putting up articles and sounds like AbleGamers and BBC games might be doing things too. Is anyone on the list taking part? All you need to do is some kind of awareness raising activity, like a blog post or a demo for some colleagues, and let the organisers know what you're planning so they can tweet about it on the day. More info is on globalaccessibilityawarenessday.org, and you can contact them on globala11yawareness...@gmail.com, or through the twitter/facebook links on their site. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Wondering about the size of the audio gaming community
I personally agree with the pricing of the games you mentioned, Tom, but not all developers offer quite as much gameplay for the buck as, for example, you or David Greenwood, and not all games are that cheap. Also, and I'm not trying to offend anyone, comparing any of our games to a studio title just won't work. Yes, we don't really have studio versus independent development audiogames. In fact, there's sort of a problem there, which I'd rectify if I could. In most cases, developers are flying solo, the indiest of the indie. It would be more fair to get someone to read a list of games on Steam, since it's not accessible, and check on the prices for most indie games. I'm not saying that three bucks for a game is going to happen for us, though in some cases, pricing should parallel. Some of our games are the kind where you pick it up, play it for an hour, and then you're done. And some of those games are also paid products. All I'm saying is that, while we have some very good games and some talented developers, the game industry has changed somewhat. And with more and more people getting their feet wet with devices like iPhones and the like, developers who charge $40 for a game that has a counterpart on the iPhone for $10 are going to lose a lot of business. In short, the blind gaming market's developers have seen a monopoly of sorts. Back in the day, there were, what, two of them? i'm talking about the days of PCSGames in DOS. Now, there are quite a few, some offering free games, others offering paid ones. The selection of games has never been broader for us, and I couldn't be happier about that. All I want to really point out is that developers are working independently. They therefore should consider checking out the list of independent games and getting an idea of how much they might charge if they were selling the game to the sighted. That, combined with that survey idea, will be a good marker for how much a game might be priced. Thank you, by the way, for offering to write that out, Tom. It could do a lot for us, and I urge you to get developer feedback, to obtain a feature list from the broadest array possible. To tie it into piracy, which got me into this topic in the first place, if people see that developers are doing the research, and if players start doing a little research of their own, then I think fewer people will pirate games. This is because everyone will know about the broader market, as opposed to our little secluded one. If everyone works on a level field, there's fewer holes to hide in, so to speak. Let's face it. There's no kind of security that can't be breached at some point, except maybe having people log into a server each time they go to play a game, such as with Electronic Arts title Sim City 4. This introduces a whole lot of customer service into the needs of your game, as people are going to have problems, right off the bat. Anything else can be broken, and even server-side security might be compromisable, given time. The answer is to ensure people that the price you're asking is reasonable. It means being flexible in how much profit you might make, which is a tough thing to do, because each of us wants our creative work to be highly rewarding. However, if you ask $35 for a game, but 30% of people playing it paid for it, that's a considerably lower profit margin than asking $15 or $20 for the game and getting 70% or better playing legally. For the first time, I'll make a case, and I'm not trying to call anyone out. VIPMud costs $30. All of the GMA Games are either free, thank you very much David Greenwood, or from $30 to $35. VIPMud is a great client. I've played around with it a lot, and I think it does a good job of making muds even more accessible, but I also look around and see the many free or cheaper mud clients out there. MushClient and MonkeyTerm come to mind, and neither is quite as easily accessible as VIPMud, in my experience anyway. There are also two clients for the iDevices which are, if memory serves, either $3 or $4. These are a little limited compared to VIPMud or the others, but they work, especially if you happen to have a Bluetooth keyboard. If David Greenwood had chosen to ask $10 or $15 for VIPMud, more people would have paid, fewer people would have pirated, and everyone would be happier. As it stands, just sit down and ask around a little and you would be shocked at how many people pirate the product. Is it fair to David? Of course it isn't. Is it the right thing to do? Absolutely not. Is there any justification for it? Not any that would stand up in front of any court or debate panel. Still, if the client was a bit cheaper, especially since mudding is free, the model would make more sense, and be more likely to attract business. Still, a long topic again, with a bit of rambling. Sorry for that. Thanks for keeping with me. Signed: Dakotah Rickard On 5/6/13, Dallas O'Brien wrote: > hi. i know exactly what you mean. I, for example, would love a

Re: [Audyssey] General horse racing game design
Hi Cara, Well, when I played the Lighttech horse racing game a few years back I didn't' think it was all that great. There were a number of things I didn't like about it. For example, it didn't really stick to true real world horse racing. There were a number of extra obstacles like cactus plants to jump, rivers to swim across, and cliffs you could fall off of. The game was OK, but I would have preferred a more straight up horse racing game without the weird additions. The other thing I distinctly remember not liking about the design is you had to press space to start a move. Your horse would run a random amount of spaces, you'd hit space again and another horse would run, and so on. It took forever to complete a race because it wasn't all done in real time. Meanwhile there was usually a human commentator announcing the play by play action just like at a real track. We haven't really seen a horse racing game like that yet, and it should be easy to do on an iPhone or PC. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] sapi5 voice
Hi Jim, Yes. Accessing the various screen readers is very similar. To access Jaws on Jaws 8 and above there is a Com component called the FSAPI. That's short for Freedom Scientific API.You initialize it like any other Windows Com component and simply pass strings of text to the functions in the FSAPI. I don't remember the functions right off the top of my head, but I followed the documentation they sent me and it was a piece of cake. I think the only screen reader I know of that doesn't have a Com based interface is NVDA. I think you have to link directly to the NVDA Controller Client directly, but that might have changed. At any rate writing a wrapper for various screen readers in Visual Basic 6 or Visual Basic .NET is a fairly straight forward process. At least for current versions of the various screen readers. Re: [Audyssey] awsem homer
Hi Jim, Correct. On Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 UAC won't allow you to write to c:\Program Files or c:\Program Files (x86) because they are protected operating system directories. The only two solutions are to either turn UAC off, which disables some of your security, or move them to a local directory such as c:\Users\Your User Name\Kitchinsinc. Either that or update the programs to save the log files to the proper places on modern Windows versions such as the user's App Data folder. Cheers! Hi Curt, I have heard of the same problem from others. The problem seems to be that my games write to a file such as the save game or log file etc and the UAC of Windows no longer likes that in program files. So I guess that you need to either turn off the UAC or move the kitchensinc folder out of program files. I hope that helps. Hi Thomas, Thank you. That's interesting. The syntax is not too different than for the SDK that I use. Re: [Audyssey] Horse Racing Game and Windows 8
Hi Thomas, COMAudio was a custom made library and was not part of any Windows distribution. I think if you wanted to install it you would have to ask its creator, but I don't even know if he has it any more. Kind regards, Damien C.S. Re: [Audyssey] Horse Racing Game and Windows 8
Hi Thomas, If I remember correctly the Lighttech games used a very old COM API called COMAudio, which was a wrapper around the Audiere and ZLib libraries. I think the version of Audiere used was written for DirectX8, and the library itself was very buggy. If it gives you any idea, that particular game would sometimes freeze on XP as well, as the program tries to silently register the COM object on loading, and seems to run itself into an infinite loop if unsuccessful. My guess is that for whatever reason Windows 8 is not registering the comaudio.dll file, and that'll be why it freezes. Kind regards, Damien C.S.
