Firefox always constantly crashes on me whenever I've tried it, so I've never been able to use webvision at all. There are perfectly good accessible audio alternatives to these bloody stupid captures anyway, so if people must have them, i'd personally suggest persuading developers to change. heck, after having no captures at all on the audiogames.net forum for years, but employing some other antispam measures in the background and good moderation I'm not even convinced these stupid things are necessary anyway. Re: [Audyssey] Ashes of Angels
I'm not one to jump on the nitpicking wagon usually, but seeing as the thread took a turn toward encouraging people to write to developers, it's probably worth pointing out once again that anyone who does that should be writing in to discuss the CAPTCHA on their site, not capture. In case it helps anyone to remember the difference, the acronym stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. If that still doesn't help you remember it (it's not exactly catchy is it), just try and remember that there is a difference. A quick Google search of pretty much any variation of the spelling will turn up the correct Wikipedia entry as its first result and you could copy/paste from there. Happy to agree to disagree about the importance of writing well in places like Auddysey, but folks, when you're writing to mainstream developers, I implore you to do your bit, because in that instance, the impression you make represents blind people the world over as a player base. *gets off soap box* Scott On 5/31/14, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Firefox always constantly crashes on me whenever I've tried it, so I've never been able to use webvision at all. Re: [Audyssey] Ashes of Angels
I don't know how much it's changed sinse I last played, but the basic idea is that you have a spaceship and fly around. Your pretty much liited to just trading, haulage or elliegal missions at the start, but there is combat, mining and farm owning later. One really clever thing about the game though is it's physics and travel system. There were comparatively few planets and such to go to, and all of them had real orbits in X Y and Z access. your travel time was calculated in real time and so you literally had to start your ship off and then wait for it to arrive hours later. Fortunately the travel tools were very useful, as were the various trade indexes. it was a nice idea for a game, but extremely slow, especially as it took literally weeks to get into a ship that could handle combat or get to own a farm or factory, and I'm not sure how much by way of new things to do those added to the game. I will say the community was pretty good, indeed there was a lot of friendly player interaction and though some players did get to be pirates it took such a long time mostly they only attacked people with similarly massive ships, or took out npcs, so no newbie bashing. then again it's literally about ten years sinse I played the game so it wouldn't surprise me if more has been added sinse, actually I hope it has. Re: [Audyssey] eris universe
Well i gather from the write up this is yet another empire building resource gathering and colonization game with space fleet combat. To be honest I'm not really interested in playing this sort of thing multiplayer. A single player game with you exploring space, colonizing planets and encountering alien races might be fun, but the multiplayer ones just don't really interest me sinse whenever I've tried one they've always been heavy on pvp and who can minimax the best or who knows how to make the best designs. Really i wish someone would do a single player one of these which actually worked around propelry exploring space and dealing with what you encountered, rather than just numbercrunching beside a lot of other human players. Sorry if I sound a little disalusioned on this one, I'm just geting a little board of every game which perports to be about exploring space being much more about one upping other players or making the best alliances, than about the actual exploration being about finding something different and then using what what you find to build up and explore more. Re: [Audyssey] eris universe
I do know exactly what you mean. I do not disagree with you in the slightest. However, I do like these sorts of games. Games like this and Galactic empires, are pretty unique. In as much as that they are persistent and no reset required. I hate games that reset! But to see a proper space game, with proper elements of empire building and exploration, would be very good indeed. I think half the problem with the game such as this, is the coding aspect. The sort of game with the level of complexity at the likes of you and I would like to see, would probably be a complete nightmare to code. That's not to say you can't be done or shouldn't be done. [Audyssey] BGT Important Update
aHi all, Over the last few years, BGT has acquired a pretty large user base. In fact, it has become more popular than I could ever have imagined when I first started developing it back in 2009. So in terms of adoption and community, it has been a definite success. However, financially the picture is a little different. I knew when I first envisioned it that it would not sell very much, seeing as how it is targeting a small subset of the blind community which in itself is not that large to begin with. However, over the years it has become apparent just how small the potential market is. I have concluded that I can no longer justify working on it to the extent that I did in the beginning, and on top of that I am involved in a lot of other projects which take up the absolute majority of my time. For the last few months I have been debating back and forth with myself what the right course of action would be. One option is to simply make it abandonware and forget about it, but I do not like that alternative. Another option would be to continue selling it and releasing updates in the little free time that I am able to dedicate to it, but that seems unfair to the users who have paid for a product that they expect updates and prompt support for. I dismissed that. The final option that I have actually chosen to go for, is to make the product free but not abandon it. I will continue to maintain it, adding new features as time permits and fixing any bugs that spring up as soon as I can. I will keep the forum online, and I will continue to accept sponsorships from those who want to see a new feature in the engine and are willing to pay a little something for it to happen. Simply put, a fully functional version of the engine can now be downloaded free of charge from www.blastbay.com. Be sure to uninstall any prior version that you may have on your system before installing this new one, as it contains some minor incompatibilities. I will continue to maintain the product as I mentioned previously, but please understand that any emails you send to me with questions about how to write this or that piece of code will probably go unanswered. The right place to ask such questions is the Blastbay forum. I do visit the forum fairly frequently and will continue to respond to queries whenever I am able, but please do not get upset if you don't hear back from me quickly. With all this said, I would like to thank everyone who has used and/or supported BGT over the years. It has been a labor of love for me and I hope that you will all find the unlocked features in the new freeware version useful. Continue to make fun games with it and send me a copy of your next blockbuster if you feel thus inclined. Thank you! Re: [Audyssey] eris universe
Hi Darren. To be honest I've never really had the patience or care to play one of these through to reset anyway sinse generally the aspects I find interesting in exploration and empire building are just not ones it would be possible to enjoy with other players. I do hope we'll see a single player space exploration and colonization game at some point. star base orion actually looked like a really nice compromise that would work in either single or multiplayer, a shame the developer decided to be a complete and utter git, curse him! I actually disagree that it'd be so hard to code a single player game like this because fundamentally as a single player you only have to worry about your own development and how various game elements effect it. For example rather than actually coding fully developed Ai empires with as many options as yours, simply code a number of races on a random generator, have them populate and move through areas of space and code hy they respond to you when you encounter them, heck there wouldn't even be a need to have them interact with natural deposits of resources in space the way you would, sinse if a race is say into mining it's only how their mining affects you that matters, just have your ships find less minable asteroids in their teretory and have some programmed encounters with their mining ships. Actually the hardest part would be creating the resource distribution on the map and various build and tech trees or the like, as well as finding sufficient win conditions for the game. Aprone in castaways created a pretty awsome resource distribution and build system with maps, different buildings, and indeed moving enemies that interacted, it'd just be a matter of expanding those sorts of concepts. I'll certainly download it. I certainly would have purchased a pro unlimited license had funds been available. Despite my recent laxity about really sitting down and learning the BGT language, mostly due to stuff going on in my own life, I still ahve an interest in developing. Does this mean we're stil able to sell titles should we wish to do so? Some of the ideas I've had would certainly have to be commercial given the amount of time and effort that would likely go into them. Thank you! Yes this means you can make games you can sell. On 5/31/14, Bryan Peterson bpeterson2...@cableone.net wrote: It all depends on the financial feasibility.
