[Audyssey] Traders Of Known Space 5 release notice
Hi. We tried posting from our VGA email account, and Jeremy tried from his personal account, neither have came back in 12 hours, so I'll try. Is the VGA account still on moderated status? Please moderators take our valiantGalaxy email account off moderated status when you get a chance? That said, listers will probably get 3 postings of the release. We apologize for that. Valiant Galaxy Associates is happy to announce version 5 of Traders of Known Space. This version incorporates a number of player convenience changes, as well as addressing some minor issues. These include: 1. X and Y axes have been fixed. X is now horizontal and Y is vertical as expected. 2. You can change settings so that the map will read both X and Y coordinates when you move. 3. Numerous additional commands to make exploring the map faster and more effective. 4. Numerous informational changes within menus. 5. Addition of the M hot key for more information about hazards, planets, upgrades, and products. 6. The game will now work without internet connection. More changes are available in the change log, accessible with f4 from the game itself. We hope that you will enjoy this iteration of TKS as much as the original release. To update, you have two options, just launch the game with an available internet connection and allow it to auto update, or download the new installer from http://valiantGalaxy.com/tks/tradersOfKnownSpace0.0.0.5Installer.exe --Cheers, Sent with thunderbird 17.0.8 portable --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] The blind swordman, an audiogame with tactics
Now that the list is back I'm going through my sent items and posting any messages that did rubber ball impressions but might be of interest to people, so here you go: Hi. This is to anyone who hasn't seen this one over at audiogames.net It's an action game where you play a warrior who has become blind and is seaking a warlock to help him get his site back. You have a sword and shield, but the game is very much anime enspired with armies of attacking warriors, dagger wielding psychotic women, and archers who's arrows you can cut out of the air (yes it's that awsome). The music, sounds and story are great, however what really impresses me about this one is the gameplay. it is extremely simple, move left and right, up arrow to attack, down arrow to parry, and should by rights be just another sterrio target boppit affair. I am however extremely impressed by the way the game works mechanically. You can't just automaticaly block every attack and then respond with a hit, there are opponents you need to attack first, some others you need to attack slightly before they do etc. Actually the mechanics are far closer o those of a beatemup in terms of timing and response even though the enemies only have one attack each and you have only one block and one attack to play with. I'd definitely advise developers interested in creating more subtle audiogames to have a look at this one, sinse it takes that very simple idea we've all seen time after time, but manages to make it mechanically much more interesting and adds just those elements of judgement which I've been wittering on about, indeed I am quite surprised it was possible in such a basically simple game. The story and sounds are also great too (the enemies are just so evil). Either way I'll stop wittering and say where to get it. The game was originally designed to run on a game play website in flash, but getting that one to work was a bit of a pest so the author has provided a direct download: http://www.evildogserver.com/theblindswordsman/theblindswordsmanPC.zip I'll be adding this one to the database when the developer sends me more information. [Audyssey] Proteus the tower of terror a gamebook for Iphone
This is something that just turned up recently, and something I'm quite pleased about. A company called Ap endix llc have started producing gamebooks for Iphone. They have begun with the first protius magazine adventure Tower of Terror and I hope they're planning on more. Crytically however, and unlike Tinman and the attempts to port Steve Jackson's original books to Iphone, the developers of the protius port actually include! full voice over support. This means not only does everyone with an Ios device get speaking text and easily usable buttons, but also the games are entirely accessible to the photonically impared. The game can be found here on the ap store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/proteus-the-tower-of- terror/id832754003?mt=8 Sadly I can't find the developer's own site (sinse I want to contact them and say thank you), but I am definitely liking the setup. its' absolutely free but a few extra items such as an additional save slot in the form of a bookmark and a get out of death free card can be bought in the ap itself, though of course they're not necessary. I will confess I've been quite disappointed and somewhat mistified by the fact that Apple include a very usable screen reading program in their operating systemn, nearly all gamebooks are made out of pure text, and yet with the exception of the works Choiceofgames (which are not exactly gamebooks in the traditional sense), nearly everyone has completely buggered things up in terms of access. I definitely hope tinman and gamebook experience are taking lessons here, and nin the mean time I'm having lots of fun finding sticky ways to meet my doom in the Tower of Terror! Re: [Audyssey] The blind swordman, an audiogame with tactics
Hi. The game is available for Pc and Mac but not Iphone. As to Anime, Cartoonish and anime are not the same thing at all. cartoonish in the western sense usually means goofy or nonsensical, like the sort of thing you'd see in Road runner or bugs bunny or similar, Blind swordsman is not like that at all sinse it is a serious game with a serious and rather grim plot. I used the term Anime there because most people associate stories of combat, mystic curses and the like with Japanese Animation. Really this again is something of a mistake sinse in japan anime means anything animated which can pretty much be any genre from romantic comedy to serious drama, to historical to horror. The principle reason people associate the term Anime in the west with things like Dragon ball, mighty duels, magic, robots, tentacle monsters and samurai who can cleave tanks in half with swords is because the first Anime that were brought to the west in translation were of this type, though these are by no means all of what is possible in Anime at all. I just gave the term sinse the plot of Blind swordsman reminded me strongly of Afro Samurai, Samurai seven and a few of the more tradditional action style Anime I've seen and is what people would recognize by the term. Either way, give it a try it's a good game :D. Beware the grue! DArk. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Generally it refers to Japanese anime, Japanese animated cartoons, but the term anime is more broadly being used to mean any sort of cartoon that uses animation. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] The blind swordman, an audiogame with tactics
Hi Dark, Thanks for the clarification, but I knew what you meant. When I used the term cartoonish I didn't mean funny, goofy, or non-sensical, and was trying to indicate cartoons as in animated. However, you are right that most westerners associate the term cartoonish with goofy and non-sensical so bad choice of terms there. However, you are right about the word anime. In Japan an anime movie or show can be any genre from a serious fantasy quest to a high tech show about robots. There is even some pornographic anime which are x-rated films using animated techniques. So the term anime can pretty much go for any game or movie with animation. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] The blind swordman, an audiogame with tactics
Hi Tom. Actually I shouldn't really have used the term anime in this context. My brother is a fan of anime however the stuff he watches (and the stuff I pinch off him), can range in genre very much, for example over christmas we watched two series, Shiki, which is a very character based drama that turns slowly into an extremely shocking and tragic horror concerning vampires in a small village, and Spice n wolf, a fantasy tale about a girl who can turn into a wolf and her travels with a merchant in a sort of medeival land where there are some elements of magic and spirits, although the series was mostly about the merchant's various dealings. I once asked my brother why exactly he watched so much anime specifically over what was available in the west and he simply stated (quite accurately), that a lot of what hollywood, and to an extent the bbc are doing now is very generic, predictable and built along similar lines, where as in Japan things are being much more creative in terms of telling interesting stories. This is particularly true sinse in a lot of Anime you are not simply seeing the events that occur as you might in a western film or a western animated program, you are seeing the character's perspective on those events. For example Wlecome to the Nhk is a very simple story about a young man with agoraphobia who gets progressively tied up with various other bad ways of coping with his life before he sorts himself out, addiction to online games, geting wrapped up with pyramid schemes etc, yet a good half of the program is what is going on in his brain, rather than in the real world around him. This is also why i really shouldn't have used the term anime sinse it rather perpetuates the sterriotype that all anime is like dragon ball, bleach, inuhasha etc, ie, samurai, swords, magic, robotss, demons and nasty things with tentacles, with big battles and explosions, which it certainly is not. This is more properly shonan,, or anime aimed at young boys, though unfortunately as I said it's become something of a sterriotype. Btw, the pawnographic anime is known as Hentai and generally people use that term when refering to it, rather than classing it with anime generaly. With blind swordsman, it was the plot that reminded me very much of Afro Samurai, and to a lesser extent samurai seven or fist of the north star, sinse you play a swordsman trying to find a warlock to restore his vision who must fight his way past various people on the path to the warlock's tower, while Afro Samurai is about a Samurai (voiced and indeed rather modeled on MAce Windu himself, Samual L jackson), whoo is climbing a mountain path to try and confront the person who killed his father when he was young who is a great master whom many other warriors want to challenge, which of course the Samurai must fight his way through.
