I think it all comes down to what you're looking for in a game, how much sighted help you have, how much you're willing to experiment, and a whole host of other factors. In the end, it all amounts to how much accessibility you want, and what degree of inaccessibility you're willing to put up with. Would you know just from the sounds that one of Scorpion's combos in MK III has him pulling out a battleaxe and slicing his opponent up with it? Can you tell what a fatality does just by the sounds it makes, or do you need a sighted person or internet site to describe them to you? Personally, I'm into the games purely from a point of nostalgia, and enjoy watching someone play if they describe. Occasionally, I'll even pick up a controller, study the move lists, and do a little button mashing myself, but I also won't convince myself that I'm really playing the game. I could probably steal a car in GTA III, and could probably shoot a few people, but I could never jump the buildings on my motorcycle or take pictures of the philandering senator--and if I can't do those things, I can't complete the game, and if I can't complete the game, is it really even accessible? Of course, that news is fairly old now. Given the grief he's taken for being so public about things, I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't updated his web site. We likely won't hear a thing from him until Max or this system is completely ready. There's also a ton of other responsibilities and things happening in his life. Re: [Audyssey] Monty news and updates.
hi tom and all. I am wondering is the new Microsoft dot net frame work up on your web sight?or will this be included in the download package for Alfa 2 of monty? from Mich Verrier from New Liskeard Ontario Canada - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Wednesday, August 09, 2006 5:52 AM Subject: [Audyssey] Monty news and updates. Hello gamers, Early this week, Monday, I began the process of updating Montezuma's Revenge to the 2.0 .NET Framework. In the process I have decided to also make a drastic alteration in the way game audio is handled. In Alpha 1 I used a standard stereo pan control, via DirectX, to pan the sound effects. While that is generally ok allot of testers felt that the handling of sound effects just isn't quite right, and the roll off factor for sounds sounds fake and unnatural. I plan to correct this by rewriting the audio class for the game and will be using full virtual 3D buffers which will correct this issue. It should sound much more natural when the job is complete. Another major change I have planned is using DirectX DirectInput to handle game movement and keyboard control. In Alpha 1 allot of folks were discontent with the way keyboard input was handled. True I was just using a standard Windows form event to handle input. Again while functional the major problem with that was it couldn't support multiple keyboard controls such as control+right arrow to speed run or space arrow key to jump. As a result this will be changed to be more flexable with keyboard commands. So what can you expect in the updated release? In the upcoming release I plan to really overhall the core engine. This is going to take a quite a long time to do. Not sure when Alpha 2 will be out, but it won't be soon with this stuff in the works. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Matthew Atkinson of AGRIP gave a presentation about his theories and findings in the AudioQuake project. Guidelines for game accessibility were also presented here. These are one of the first sets of guidelines currently under development (in this case these resemble the style and format of W3C's WAI-CAG guidelines for web accessibility). I personally think there's a lot wrong with the proposed guidelines so I look forward to the other ones currently under development. I suggest you all have a look for yourselves here: http://gameaccess.medialt.no/guide.php and see how people are out there trying to define how the industry should make more accessible games. I'm interested in what you, the tar get group for these guidelines, think about them... Among the participants were Michelle Hinn (IGDA), Thomas Westin and Goran Lange (PinInteractive), Dimitris Grammenos and Giannis Georgalis (Universally Accessible Space Invaders), Barrie Ellis (OneSwitch.org.uk), yours truly (AudioGames.net / Accessibility.nl) and Eelke Folmer (Ass. And to end with a bang, Eelke showed some new insights to ac cessible game design (also in relation with usability design) and also possible guidelines (although in a usability format this time). In the audience was none other than game veteran Ernest Adams himself. Ernest is about to publish his new book (http://tinyurl.com/h9b26) which will feature an appendix on (more) accessible game design. One newsitem I am very proud to announce is that of the GDC Accessibility Idols. The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is the biggest game design related conference in the world (and no, the E3 is a consumer expo where all new and future games are on display - the E3 is where publishers go to sell their games (and designers go to get drunk, and the GDC is where designers go to get serious about their design (and eventually get drunk as well). The IGDA GA-SIG (www.igda.org/accessibility) has managed to set up an amazing event for next years GDC and it is called Accessibility Idols. For this event, very famous game designers are asked to design an accessible game. The games will then be presented before a huge crowd and judged by an expert panel. Although I can''t really name any names yet, rumour has it that none other than Ernest Adams (see above) and Keita Takahashi (the creator of Katamari Damacy) might be amongst the designers to take on the challenge. hi that all sounds fine. from Mich Verrier from New Liskeard Ontario Canada - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Sunday, June 25, 2006 1:57 AM Subject: [Audyssey] Montezuma's Revenge Announcements. Hi, all. Ok, I just want to make a few public announcements about what we are going to be doing and where we will be going in the next week or so with Alpha 1. Before I get directly in to that though I would like to give a quick reminder to those just joining us, and for those who are doing public testing. First, I'd just like to remind folks that this version is a test release only and that is why it is labeled as Alpha status. Second, not all the features have been added, levels, etc have been completed. This is very much a work in progress, and as such some things like reviewing the rooms have not been added to save time for release, but are fully intended to be added at some point. Ok, as for the issue for falling off ladders here is what we are going to do in the patch we are working on. In the classic arcade game it was impossible to fall off of ropes and ladders. The game wouldn't let you do it, and after just testing the Alchemy Demo that version wouldn't do it either. To be fair we will fix it so you can't fall off the ladders, and are restricted to up or down movement on ladders. This is probably the fairist solution since previous versions of the game did it that way. As for jumping for the moment I will likely change it so space will jump you in the direction you are facing at the time. This is a crude fix, but I simply don't have the time at the moment to yank out all the keyboard handling code, start from scratch using DirectInput, rewrite the jumping code, etc to do the job the way it should be done. Long term though I will work on a DX Input interface for keyboard handling and rewrite it to work more like the NES and Atari games worked However, that is not going to happen in this weeks patch. Third, several of you really were disappointed or frustrated in the lake of reviw features in the current Alpha. This is more-or-less an easy update, and I'll work on a review mode setup for you guys so you can look around the rooms, find out what way ladders run, etc... I'm considering a sort of Jaws like setup where if you want to look around turn on review mode and the movement keys will navigate around the room, and tell you what it finds When you want to physically move turn review mode off. Yes, the Mario Brothers version I plan to write will be very similar to the original game. You grabbed certain kinds of mushrooms. Some would shrink or restore you, and others turned you in to super Mario. There were also fire flowers that turned you in to fire Mario so you could shoot fireballs. As for the music I have the original music both in wav recorded format which are exact recordings of the Nintendo music, and I also have midi files which are remakes of the music which sound really really good. ___ Gamers mailing list .. I'm thinking I should just turn off the joystick/gamepad support for the demo, get the installer made, and release the test release of Montezuma's Revenge for now without some of those features until I can fix them. What do you all think? Do you want me to wait until I fix the joystick code, or turn off the joystick code until I fix it and make an early release. Thanks. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Here are the three games I am considering at this point: 1. Kickboxer - A fighting game where two players meet over the internet to beat each others brains out. Like rail racer, this game allows use of the mouse or joystick to input various combinations against your opponent. For instance to pull off a roundhouse kick, you may need to move your controller left, then right and hit the second button. There will be lots of combos like this that willl need to be mastered to be an effective fighter. 2. Head to Head football - A football simulation allowing two players to go at it on the gridiron. This also will be internet ready, and will include season results posted to the web, so we can hold tournaments and the like. Besides a full playlist to simulate coaching, I plan on including the ability to control individual players to some extent during a play. The way I envision it, folks can set up their own leagues, and play an entire season of NFL football, with any teams not claimed by humans being played by the computer. 3. Gunship - A helicopter fighting simulation modeled after the Apache A64 attack helicopter. The Apache is currently the baddest helicopter on the planet, capable of holding a large amount of various missiles for tank killing, troop slaying, and target bombing. In addition the Apache has one of the most advanced targeting systems known to man with the TADS system, and all of this will be integrated into the simulation, along with the fearsome chain gun mounted on the front of the chopper. I am curious what players out there are most interested in of these three games. The games are pretty much listed in ascending order of complexity, and therefore development time, with Gunship being far more complex than the other two games. If I go with Gunship, you can expect an extended wait on the release of the simulation, as I used to be a hard core flight simulation player when I could see, and I plan on bringing a high level of intensity to this game. Please let me know what you think, and which game you would prefer. Hi, listers. Many of you are wondering about details on the new Montezuma's Revenge. So here is what is currently happening with Monty. * As of the latest build, 5/22/2006, Monty now has one of the highest quality sounding environments of any accessible game on the market. It sounds so real it sounds almost as good as a dvd or like you are in a movie. I guess it has to be heard to be believed. * Some bugs have just been fixed such as the game having slow proformence while moving the game character such as walking, jumping, climbing, etc. * Joystick and game support is now fully apart of the game. Some issues remain with the functionality, but I am working towards addressing that soon. As well as a built in joystick button mapper so that you may map your joystick for your preference. * Temple 2 is now in the works. Once I am done with temple 2, and I am sure everything is stable to test I will post Alpha 1 for release. Which means we could have a release by June to play with. All depends on how much time it takes tracking down the current issues. Finally a question. I have had a few requests on the directed to USA Games sales asking us to put Arazona Smith back in to the game. Anyone else agree with this, apose this, or don't care? Send us your thoughts. Especially, a Jedi one would be able to use the force to increase running speed. As for the assalamiri it is not who are they but what are they. They are a special alien creature able to push back the force and create a forceless bubble which disables a Jedi from using the force. ___ Gamers mailing list .. No other directions. Believe it or not the directions of the arrow keys ,make sense after a while. You use the up and down arrow keys on ladders, ropes, trees, etc and the left and right arrow keys when walking through the rooms. What is hard about that?
