Re: [Audyssey] muds for beginners?

2008-01-27 Thread Orin
As I said before, almost every mud is fantasy, but if you don't want a
fantasy mud, try out miriani, at http://www.toastsoft.net; however I
wouldn't play this mud if I were you with getting started, many of the
players aren't helpful twards newbies that I've seen. You'd be best to
start off with, say, Aardwolf, or Icesus. Or if you want a challenge,
try Cybersfear, or hell, both of which are no fantasy but are sutable
for newbies in my personal oppinion. Cybersfear might not be, though,
it all depends on personal oppinion here.

Also, I would try mushclient because it's just all around better. Get
it, as well as the plugin for jaws at http://www.allinaccess.com.
MushClient is now free, so yay.

[Audyssey] muds for beginners?

2008-01-26 Thread ari
Hi all,
The library for the blind here in SA got hold of a braille book from the
library in the US, called Bots by Andrew Leonard. This book is very
interesting, examining computers and Artificial Intellegence, and discussing
things such as chat bots, etc. This book talks about an online mud game in
the early 90's from the university of Texas, which is text-based, and called
Point Moo-t. Does this still exist, and how do I get started with muds. I've
often thought of trying a mud, but I don't want fantasy stuff, are there
more realistic muds? What's a good, text-only mud for beginners? I've also
heard that I need a thing called a mud client, what is this, and from where
do I get it? I'm using JAWS 8.0.
Thanks
Ari

From what I remember, this mud does not exist. Yes, I would like a
realistic mud as well. Sadly, thoDugh, 80 percent or more muds are
fantasy these days unfortunately.

Only problem with JMC now is the help file format is out of date, so if you
use windows vista you're out of luck. That is unless you can find a help
file format conversion tool of some sort.

Use Monkey Term. It's much better. Go to
www.liamerven.com/miriani. It's a page for a space mud, but the

Hi,

I always recommend monkey term over G mud, because imho its underrated. You
can get it at
http://aarontech.randylaptop.com
and Aaron T. Spears has done a very excellent tutorial on it;also, there's a
link to alter aeon on there, which I recommend playing as a first mud, at
least for a while. If you need more help in getting set up, e-mail me off
list and I'll try and help as best as I can.

2007-05-09 Thread Brandon Cole
Oh here I go again. Heheh. Yes, I certainly do have two I can suggest. It
all depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a large, more
questheavy environment, I'd suggest New Moon. The address is:
eclipse.cs.pdx.edu
port 7680
However, if you're a more combat-intensive person, I'd suggest Godwars 2, as
it has what is probably the most full-featured combat system I've ever seen.
It does take a little getting used to, but once you've got it, you'll love
it. If you are a combat enthusiast, then try
godwars2.com
port 3000
Enjoy!

That's gone down heavily since the safety features were put in, so its

Re: [Audyssey] muds

2006-10-17 Thread Cary
you don't get muds anywhere. Muds are servers that you connect to, either
through a mud client such as GMud or MonkeyTerm, or directly through the
standard windows telnet program. A great source for muds is the
mudconnector http://www.mudconnector.com where there are literally thousands
of muds you can look through to see which ones would suit your needs. There
are muds from everything ranging to standard medieval to futuristic scifi
type muds and everything in between. If you were going to go with a mud
client, I personally would recommend GMud because it's got relatively good
scripts from what I've heard. But MonkeyTerm is also good as well. I'm not
sure of the sites you go to get those clients but someone on list should be
able to direct you.

 Hi, Mark.
Well, I will try and explain ports without going in to a major
discussion of computer networking. Here is the short version of it.
Every program that works on a computer network, say the internet,
broadcasts on and connects via what is called a port. For example, when
you fire up your web browser and go to
 www.somewhere.com
your web browser connects with the servers port 80 which handles http
stuff via a web hosting software like apache or IIS.
When you use your email say sending email it connects to your mail
server on a different port, port 25 SMTP, which is where sendmail,
postfix, exem, and other mail transport server software lives.
Well, other programs residing on your computer may connect on a
different port. For example, mud clients run on port numbers usually
 above 5000.
Simplest answer, is it is kind of like a private phone extention for a
program service trying to be reached.
Look at it this way. You can dial
 somewhere.com
 port 22: admin secure shell.
 port 25: sending mail.
port 26: logged in via telnet.
 port 80: viewing web page.
 port 5000: playing game.
So depending on what port you are connected to will determine if you can
access ftp, ssh secure shell, sending mail, viewing web content, playing
 a game, etc

Re: [Audyssey] Muds was StarWars browsergame?

2006-08-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi, Mark.
As stated before in your mud client give it the domain and port number.
After it connects to the game you will get a welcome screen. If it is
your first time you will need to create a new character/account.

Click the search link, go to the search box and type in a keyword, and then
connect to one of the muds that come up.

So depending on what port you are connected to will determine if you can
access ftp, ssh secure shell, sending mail, viewing web content, playing
 a game, etc

 Hi, Mark.
First, you need a mud client, a program used to connect with and play
mud and mush games. Two of them I can think of is gmud and Monkey Term.
After that just google for muds. There is all kinds of them over the
net. Star Trek, Star Wars, triditional DND, general sci-fi, etc...
Once you find one you want give it a address, and port number to connect
to and you are in business.

get them? I have never tried a MUD before, but all my friends play them.
 Thanks!

 Hi Richard,
A mud is a Multi-User Dungeon. They are games designed with a client
software that connects online to a server where several people can
create or act as mud world characters fighting monsters, exploring
dungeons, and other kinds of adventures. Most of them are accessible,
especially the text based ones, but there are all kinds of muds.
If you are in to huge multi-player games like RPG type games then you
 will really like mudding.

There a mud called unicornvalley, host is unicornvalley.org port 2500.
There are many races to choose from. Minotaur, tabaxi, half-ogre,
half-troll, sprite, elf, nereid, dro, half-elf, and I may be forgetting a
couple of others, but there are 13 different classes to choose from. You
can also remort too.

 Hi Thom,
That really clears up a lot. I am really interested in this style of
gaming. i have been nervous to try these for fear of really messing up but
 I
think with the help of this list I may just find one and give it a try.

Is there any gamers out there playing any real good muds? Let me know what
games you are currently playing and all the info about it. Thanks for all
 the help.

 Rich
