Re: [Audyssey] 64 bit windows and tts

2013-09-18 Thread Michael Gauler

Hi Thomas,
You are probably right...
But it doesn't mean that I have to like it.
And while it is not really game relevant in a direct manner, it should be
mentioned somewhere, since we had talks about what platforms game developers
should or should not support in the near future.
And what I don't get is why it is seemingly super easy and cheap to get
nearly all current Acapela voices for Mac for personal use, while it is
nearly impossible to do it for Windows.
If the major screen reader companies would make deals like with Nuance, then
I still could get German children's voices or an Australian English female v
voice, even if it was limited to one program...
But not even that seems to be possible to keep with that example, because
the voices I mentioned are sold freely for MAC, but neither free (SAPI) nor
a limited (non SAPI) variant can be bought (at the moment).
And when I say that something can't be bought I do not mean that I can't
afford it, I mean it is not available.
I know of JAWS 15 and IOS 7 and that both will bring new voices for their
respective products.
But it is still not nice when you know what there is and you can't buy it as
simple as buying your newest Microsoft Office, Windows or whatever.
And that is technically not even limited to blind users, because you can
use speech products for lots of purposes, some commercial, and others are
non commercial.

Hi Michael,

Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't really get it myself, but
apparently Acapela has their reasons. Those may not be good reasons,
but apparently they think they can profit by doing it the way they do.
Either that or there is some specific reason why they have
specifically targeted Mac and only made some of their voices available
for Windows. Doesn't sound like good business practice to me, but
maybe they have their reasons even if they are not readily apparent to
you and I. In the end whatever the reason is we don't have to like it
but merely accept that things are the way they are right now.

Cheers!

2013-09-17 Thread Michael Gauler

That's exactly, what I don't like about this.
I know that nextup.com sell SAPI and non SAPI voices...
However, regardless of which Windows you have, it is impossible for end
users to buy Acapela voices individually for SAPI.
You can buy Infovox 4 on USB stick but that is usually limited to five
voices out of around 80.
On nextup.com you can get many of them, but they are only for use with their
own products and thus can't be used with all speech programs.
Assistive Ware on the other hand sells Acapela voices individually, but only
for Mac users.
I would like to have the same service for Windows, because Ivox 3 (Mac
version) offers more voices to select from than the Windows Infovox 4 Stick
product.
If nextup.com could sell SAPI voices like they do non SAPI voices and could
update to version 9.1, they could offer the exact same voice catalogue than
Assistive ware.

I am also aware of the upcoming JAWS 15 and the updated and new Nuance
voices.
And once more it seems that they are purposefully ignoring the third German
voice of Vocalizer Expressive, like the other company did with their voices
for NVDA.

Hi Michael,

What can I say? Companies are greedy and they get you to pay for those
voices more than once through exclusive licensing deals that only work
with a specific product rather than using an open SAPI compliant
interface. It sucks, but unless you are willing to tell them just to
stick it where the sun doesn't shine you have to pay up or shut up as
those companies are quite apparently unwilling to be reasonable about
how they sell and license their voices. It is for that reason I try to
only deal with companies like Cepstral that has reasonably decent
voices, for a reasonable price, with an open SAPI compliant interface.

Hi Josh,

Yes, they most certainly are. They obviously cost a bit more than say
the Cepstral voices, but the Ivona 32-bit and 64-bit voices are
completely SAPI compliant, and will work with screen readers, games,
as well as other text to speech applications like TextAloud and
WeatherAloud. Better yet if you let them know you use NVDA Ivona
contributes a certain percentage of their sales to blind customers to
NVDA development. So by purchasing those voices you are helping donate
towards a highly capable, open source, screen reader for Windows.

Cheers!

Hi David,
The only realspeak voices that work independently from JAWS are from the
JAWS 8 CD, not the ones from newer versions of JAWS which can be downloaded
from their site.

Those realspeak voices are tied to JAWS only.
I purchased several SAPI voices from www.Nextup .com for as low as $7 US per
voice, but they usually cost $30 to $40 a voice.
Be careful as Nextup also has voices you can purchase that work only with
their software, Text Aloud.

Re: [Audyssey] 64 bit windows and tts

2013-09-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello Dave,

Part of the problem is when you access the Sapi speech configuration
from the Windows 7 Control Panel is its using the 64-bit voices
configuration. You need to bring up the older 32-bit configuration by
entering this command into the run dialog
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Speech\SpeechUX\sapi.cpl
and then you should be able to set any 32-bit voices you have as your
system default. However, the Realspeak voices may not show up if you
are using the versions specifically proprietary to Jaws. Those do not
have Sapi compatibility and you need to use the versions designed for
Jaws 8 for full Sapi compatibility with my patched installer for
Windows 7 64-bit machines.

I know, it all sounds like a pain in the butt. However, that is what
we get for upgrading to newer 64-bit operating systems. The only other
option is to spend a little money to get some good 64-bit voices such
as those from Ivona which are truly amazing and don't have this
problem.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] 64 bit windows and tts

2013-09-03 Thread shaun everiss

its in a different control panel but I can never remember the string.
I have 64 bit systems but since every bit of software I have is 32
bit I am only running a 32 bit os.

realspeak voices, but I can not select them as the system's default
tts voice. I'm wanting to make tom my system's default voice.

If anyone has any suggestions i'd appreciate knowing about them.

Thanks.
