I've got the code for playing MP3's in vb6, but it looks a bit complicated
and I'm not sure that the files can be manipulated in the same way as wave
files are--freq, pan, etc.

With that kind of compression, you'll never run out of space--and can keep

Re: [Audyssey] Fw: mods for your games

2007-09-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ken,
Yes, it is possible to compress wav files by changing them from pcm wav
data to another wav format, but in many cases this has some very
undesirable effects. For example, if you chose to keep wav with a mp3
style compression the game files will take much longer to load into the
game. Perhaps not bad on one of Jim's games, but in a game like Monty or
Raceway the lag time is very obvious, and kills over all game
performance when switching levels or having to swap out several wav
files when changing rooms, etc.
The other issue is you probably never noticed is once saved in a
compressed format they don't properly allow DirectX to change frequency,
panning, and volume which allows the sounds to play havick with your
game. I tried this with Monty and the results were a disaster.

Re: [Audyssey] Fw: mods for your games

2007-09-11 Thread Ken the Crazy
All you do is go into Goldwave--some say Sound recorder does it too, load
your wave file, and save it again as a wave file, but in the attributes list
you can change the parameters. You'll see things like PCm 16 bit stereo and
the like, but if you type mp it will take you to MP3 attributes.
Unfortunately, it's not quite as simple as renaming an MP3 file as a wave
file, but this process is pretty fast and works well. You may have to use
odd sampling rates, like 48000 instead of 44100, but there's still a lot of
compression that takes place. Try it and see if it works. If you need any
more help, just write.

Hi Jim,
Doing it is pretty easy. Open the wav file in an editor like Goldwave
and change it's wav format type from pcm to MP3. There are other wav
format types, but all of them do have issues such as slow to load in
games, and don't always position well with DX.

 Hi Jim,
Yes, the size issue is an issue for any game developer. I have about a
gig of space and a couple of gigs of bandwidth, and that is one of the
reasons I have decided to cut down the size of STFC 2.0 and Montezuma's
Revenge. Both games started out as 30 MB monsters, but now I am going to
shrink them to 20 MB or less.
One of the ways I did this was by adding Sapi and pulling out all of the
prerecorded speech files. The second is rather than going 44100 all the
way I am converting the effects to 22500 so that it has a smaller
footprint, saves space, and actually my load times have improved as well.
As far as pleasing everyone. You are right there. We can't please
everyone, but we can please ourselves and those around us who enjoy the
 games as they are.

You must know what that is like after you ran out of band width last
month and they shut down your site. Truthfully it is frustrating when
people expect or offer me huge high quality sound files and don't
understand the fact that I can not afford that kind of cost to give out
games for free and then just want to change what I have worked so hard to
put out. I have to say though that I get lots and lots and lots of
compliments and thanks for them as well. So it is all worth it to me.

Re: [Audyssey] Fw: mods for your games

2007-09-10 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Thomas,

Yeah people do give me lots of very good ideas for new features in games etc
and I do implement many of them, but I do like to stick to my original plan for
the game that I came up with and I do try to put out a good game. Of course no
matter what you do, you can not ever please everyone. Of course I know that I
do not use the highest quality sound files in my games. But you know I have 25
free windows games on my site. Say each one of them was 30 meg. That would be
seven and a half Gig. There is no way that I could afford that kind of space
and band width. You must know what that is like after you ran out of band
width last month and they shut down your site. Truthfully it is frustrating

[Audyssey] Fw: mods for your games

2007-09-09 Thread Josh
Hi,

I got this message from Jim. It's too bad we can't replace the sounds if we
want to. it might make playing the games more fun because then we could see
who can come up with the best sounds for Jim's games or who can be the most
creative and things. I think that would be fun and then maybe people could
also host their favorite sound packs for jim's games. of course keeping the
oroginal sounds is also good too if people aren't into making modifications
or replacing the sounds with sounds that they like best.

Hi Josh,

Most of my games will not allow you to replace the sounds.

Sorry, no I do not know how to unpack sounds from other games.

To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is

Hi Josh,

I guess that you are not quite getting what I am trying to say. Ok say you buy
a painting and bring it home and notice a part of the picture that you are not
fond of, do you whip out a paint brush and paint over the part that you don't
like with what you think should go there or that you think that you can paint
in there better? Like the same thing with a cassette tape, do you sing or play
over parts because you think that you can do better than the original artist?
Or do you leave the artists work the way that they produced it? To me that is
what you are doing to my games when you modify them. You know either modifying
the sounds or cracking the code and changing it because you think that you can
make it better.

 Jim

Do you take a boom box and blast it at a free live concert in the park because
you think that it sounds better than the band?

Re: [Audyssey] Fw: mods for your games

2007-09-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
As a fellow developer I do understand where you are coming from with
this. No one likes to have their worked changed or trashed unless they
have specifically said someone could do so.
During the development of STFC I got a lot of requests to change this or
that. While I didn't mind some of them after a while it got to be over
welming, because the more I tried to please everyone elses requests the
game was no longer my idea, doing what I wanted the game to do, and I
was not at all happy with 1.0/1.2. In STFC 2.0 I plan to return to my
original idea for the game which I think will make me happier for it.
To us as game developers our games are our stories, our work of art, and
changing it can make it less than it was to us personally.
