Along these same lines, I would like to find one that has games that are
playable with absolutely no sighted assistance from start to finish.
Finding and starting the games, knowing what the target is and when and
where to aim or shoot rather than just shooting wildly in all directions and
scoring strictly by luck or chance. Games that take skill to play and being
able to play them without help.

2010-11-19 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Charles,

Unfortunately, I don't know of any mainstream console like that. All
of them require some sighted assistance when you are starting out.
Even if it is just to have someone read off the menus so you can
braille them up for later reference and things like that.

However, as been said many times fighting games like Street Fighter,
MK vs DC, and things like that can be successfully played on your own
once you get the hang of the various moves, menus, and other basics
like that out of the way.

Unfortunately, games I like to play such as Tomb Raider Underworld
can't be played without sighted assistance because the levels are too
complex. They are fully 3d with Lara Croft having to climb walls,
polls, jump over pits, and all kinds of stuff that makes it difficult
to do without both sight and dead on accuracy. Sometimes I have to
hand the controller to my wife to get passed a certain trap etc as I
simply can't do it without sight. So any kind of 3d third-person game
isn't something for us to play. Not really unless you have sighted
asistance. Fighting games like Street Fighter are managable though.

Hi Tony,

Well, in terms of number of playable games I'd still say your best bet
would be the Play Station 2. However, those are rapidly being replaced
by the Play Station 3, and I'm not sure exactly how many PS3 games are
playable from a low vision/blind standpoint. MK verses DC is, and a
few other fighting games in that style, but it sounds to me that isn't
exactly what you are after.

From the sound of your message mentioning Top Gun it sounds like you
are after something classic arcade? If so I honestly have to say the
arcade game style has pretty much vanished around the 1990's. Now,
days console games, big name console games, are mostly live action RPG
games, first-person or third-person shooters, hand-to-hand fighting
games, and of course sports games. I can't think of a single new
arcade game for XBox or Play Station. For arcade stuff Nintendo seams
to market to that kind of group and I know they are working on a new
Mario Brothers release for 2011. As far as how accessible Nintendo's
arcade games are I couldn't say.

Okay. To charles and Tony, there aren't going to be games where you
can just pick up and play without getting menus read to you. And as
Tom already said, classic arcade shooters like that have pretty much
vanished off the earth in modern day games. However, in terms of
playable games, I would agree with tom obout the ps2, followed
closely by the ps3. Fighting games are popular, as well as mlb, fight
night, smackdown vs. raw, rock band, etc. But it all comes down to
preference. If you want a good, slim controller in your hands then by
all means go for the sony consoles. I love the ps3, and the games
available for it are quite good in terms of playability. Most of
them, anyway. The XBOX360 has a more blind-friendly way of managing
online stuff, buying games from the marketplace, etc. But I
personally prefer the ps3 because of the controller, and fighting
games are a blast to play, though granted fighting games on the ps3
are more likely than not available on xbox360 as well. In the end, it
boils down to what you want. If you go into a bit more detail, we
could try and help you a bit more. But as Tom already said, if you're
looking for scrolling shooters like top gun style things, then you're
out of luck there.

Hi,

And I'd also like to add, if this hasn't been said already, that the
games that we can play require a lot of time, practice, and a good
deal of doing things from memory. For example, since menus don't
speak you might write it down, braille it up, etc but sooner or later
you are going to just want to remember the menus to navigate them
faster. In game play if you are playing a game it helps to commit to
memory certain game sounds so you can successfully block an attack,
and can counter it quickly. Unfortunately, you don't have a handy
sound descriptions menu right there so you pretty much are on your own
figuring out what sound means what. In short, what I'm saying is it
does take both a lot of time and a lot of patients learning and
getting good at any mainstream game because it pretty much boils down
to playing based on nothing more than your own memory and sound
queues.

Good thing there are training modes in every fighting game you pick
up... but one more thing to add to what you said, Tom. A lot of it is
memory and sound cues... but it's also important to keep track of
where you are on the screen. This is why I'm a decent SF player...
because I can bait my opponents into coming in near me where I can do
the most damage. If a move moves you to the other side of the screen,
it's important to know that. If a move moves you back from your
opponent or pushes them back out of your range, it's enough to know
that, as well...
