Paynes Prairie State Park is a perennial favorite. North of town might
mean O'Leno State Park.

Gainesville.

 Would something like this work?

The best thing for insects is permethrin spray. Mist your clothing and
tent with it. It will last for four + washings. On your tent, it will last
about two weeks. Repel makes a good spray or Bass Pro Shops sells a very
good quart sprayer. For your skin, you could use deet. Concentrations
above 20% are probably overkill and could irritate your skin.

2011-06-21 Thread Jay Cicone
More like 20 miles. We used to party at a handful of different springs around
the High Springs area. The good old days when one had access to private
property and wasn't hassled unless you trashed the place. Those days are
gone-at least here. As a kid growing up in south Fl the access was equally wide
open. Here in Tally, there's nothing but woods for miles and miles and every
bit of it is fenced and posted. Many also employ private patrol companies the
ride the property constantly. A shame.

A friend just suggested Ginnie Springs which according to Google maps is

The best thing for insects is permethrin spray. Mist your clothing and

good quart sprayer. For your skin, you could use deet. Concentrations
above 20% are probably overkill and could irritate your skin.

Don't do this. Highly toxic. Use sulfur powder dust on socks, lower pants, not
skin. Buy Repel, 100 % deet, on skin and clothing to repel biting insects.
Also, don't wear royal blue, as it attracts biting insects.

2011-06-21 Thread Cecilia
On game day, it might be more than 40 minutes from Ginnie to even the Oaks
Mall's park-n-ride... probably over an hour to the stadium.

Non-game days, we get there from my parents' house in about 30.

Coincidentally, my son and a bunch of his friends are there for the day today.

lol i highly doubt it... however, I was thinking maybe for the bama game at
the earliest..and most possibly for the Vandy game.

A friend just suggested Ginnie Springs which according to Google maps is
about 40 mins north of Gville.

Hi Woody-I think there are quite a few Gator fans who wtay at campgrounds
for home games--they just don't happen to be on this list. One of my old
friends, Scott Rose, who died this past year, used to reserve a spot for the
entire season at a campground. He took a travel trailer up at the beginning
of the season and left it there. I don't know where he camped, but I think
it was in Ocala. If you find a place you like, you should make your
reservation ASAP.

RE: [gatortalk] Best campsite near Gville

2011-06-21 Thread Jerry Belloit
Leon,

I don't know where you get your information about Permethrin. It is not
highly toxic in its consumer form. The concentrations are very safe in the
consumer form sold. You can by the REPEL version many places. It is for
clothing and dries into a very stable long-acting repellant. This is the
compound that is used to treat the nets used in Africa. I think what you
may have read about is people using it applied to their skin while also
using DMSO our something similar. In its more concentrated forms (10% and
above) you should take handling precautions and should be licensed to use
it. However, in the products I recommended, if you use it as directed, they
are quite safe. If you decide to bathe in it or drink it, I suppose that it
would give you problems. By the way, the Permethrin is not particularly
problematic. However, some of the solvents used to hold it are, but again,
not in those products I suggested.

Permethrin is a synthetic version of a naturally found plant organic,
pyrethrum. It is just more effective and doesn't have many of the other
organics found with it.

Deet at the 100% concentration can irritate the skin. It is no more
effective than the 25% version. It does not last any longer. The mechanism
for DEET is that it confuses the insect and makes everything around it seem
like food. Consequently the insect cannot target in on you. Permethrin
actually repels the insect. If it tries to challenge the permethrin, it
will be a fatal mistake for the insect. The insects simply will not
challenge it.

When I am worried about being bit, I will put my clothing on a hanger and
spray it with the permethrin solution and allow it to dry. If I am not
going to use the clothing right away, I put it in a sealed Ziploc bag. The
effectiveness of the permethrin will be preserved for quite some time. Once
worn, you can usually wash the garment for at least four washings or about a
month's time before it loses its effectiveness.

Don't do this. Highly toxic. Use sulfur powder dust on socks, lower pants,
not skin. Buy Repel, 100 % deet, on skin and clothing to repel biting
insects. Also, don't wear royal blue, as it attracts biting insects.
