Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Hadoop 3.0.0 GA is released

2017-12-18 Thread Andrew Wang
Moving general@ to BCC,

The main page and releases posts on hadoop.apache.org are pretty clear
about this being a diff from beta1, am I missing something? Pasted below:

After four alpha releases and one beta release, 3.0.0 is generally
available. 3.0.0 consists of 302 bug fixes, improvements, and other
enhancements since 3.0.0-beta1. All together, 6242 issues were fixed as
part of the 3.0.0 release series since 2.7.0.

Users are encouraged to read the overview of major changes
<http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/r3.0.0/index.html> in 3.0.0. The GA release
notes
<http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/r3.0.0/hadoop-project-dist/hadoop-common/release/3.0.0/RELEASENOTES.3.0.0.html>
 and changelog
<http://hadoop.apache.org/docs/r3.0.0/hadoop-project-dist/hadoop-common/release/3.0.0/CHANGES.3.0.0.html>
detail
the changes since 3.0.0-beta1.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Hadoop 3.0.0 GA is released

2017-12-15 Thread Andrew Wang
Hi Arpit,

If you look at the release announcements, it's made clear that the
changelog for 3.0.0 is diffed based on beta1. This is important since users
need to know what's different from the previous 3.0.0-* releases if they're
upgrading.

I agree there's additional value to making combined release notes, but it'd
be something additive rather than replacing what's there.

Best,
Andrew

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Hadoop 3.0.0 GA is released

2017-12-14 Thread Andrew Wang
Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce that Apache Hadoop 3.0.0 is generally available
(GA).

3.0.0 GA consists of 302 bug fixes, improvements, and other enhancements
since 3.0.0-beta1. This release marks a point of quality and stability for
the 3.0.0 release line, and users of earlier 3.0.0-alpha and -beta releases
are encouraged to upgrade.

Looking back, 3.0.0 GA is the culmination of over a year of work on the
3.0.0 line, starting with 3.0.0-alpha1 which was released in September
2016. Altogether, 3.0.0 incorporates 6,242 changes since 2.7.0.

Users are encouraged to read the overview of major changes
 in 3.0.0. The GA release
notes

 and changelog

detail
the changes since 3.0.0-beta1.

The ASF press release provides additional color and highlights some of the
major features:

Let me end by thanking the many, many contributors who helped with this
release line. We've only had three major releases in Hadoop's 10 year
history, and this is our biggest major release ever. It's an incredible
accomplishment for our community, and I'm proud to have worked with all of
you.

Best,
Andrew

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Hadoop 3.0.0-beta1 has been released

2017-10-04 Thread Andrew Wang
Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce the release of Apache Hadoop 3.0.0-beta1. This is
our first beta release in the 3.0.0 release line, and is planned to be the
last release before 3.0.0 GA. Beta releases are API stable but come with no
guarantee of quality, and are not intended for production use.

3.0.0-beta1 comprises 576 bug fixes, improvements, and other enhancements
since 3.0.0-alpha4. The full changelog [1] and release notes [2] are
available on the website, along with a higher-level description of major
changes in 3.0.0 [3].

Major features since alpha4 include the addition of S3Guard [4], which adds
strong consistency and performance improvements to the S3A filesystem
connector, and YARN Timeline Service v2 alpha2 [5], which further improves
on TSv2 alpha1 included in earlier 3.0.0 releases.

Since 3.0.0 GA is planned for next month, users are highly encouraged to
test this beta release. Let us know on the lists if we can help with your
testing efforts.

Thanks as always to the many contributors who helped with this release!

Cheers,
Andrew

Apache Hadoop 3.0.0-alpha4 has been released

2017-07-07 Thread Andrew Wang
Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce the release of Apache Hadoop 3.0.0-alpha4. This
release contains 814 bug fixes, improvements, and other enhancements since
3.0.0-alpha3.
The changelog

and
release notes

provide
more detailed information. The documentation
 provides a high-level
overview of important features and changes coming in Hadoop 3.0.

Please note that this is an alpha release. It comes with no guarantees of
stability or quality, and is not intended for production usage.

This is planned to be the final alpha before moving onto beta1. Thus,
alpha4 is a great time to get more involved with testing and integration.
Please reach out to us if we can help!

The bits are still being propagated, so please try another mirror if the
first doesn't work:

Thanks as always to the many contributors who worked on this release!

Cheers,
Andrew

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Hadoop 3.0.0-alpha3 is released

2017-06-01 Thread Andrew Wang
Hi all,

The Apache Hadoop PMC has released version 3.0.0-alpha3.

This is a security release in the 3.0.0 release line. It consists of alpha2
plus security fixes, along with necessary build-related fixes. Users on
3.0.0-alpha1 and 3.0.0-alpha2 are encouraged to upgrade to 3.0.0-alpha3.

More information about the vulnerability will be forthcoming in another
announcement.

Please note that alpha releases come with no guarantees of quality or API
stability, and are not intended for production use.

The quite minimal CHANGES and RELEASENOTES can be viewed here:

[ANNOUNCE] Apache Hadoop 3.0.0-alpha2 released

2017-01-26 Thread Andrew Wang
Hi all,

I'm pleased to announce the release of the second alpha in the 3.0.0
release line, 3.0.0-alpha2. This release contains 857 fixes, improvements,
and new features based on user feedback on the previous 3.0.0-alpha1
release. You can read the release notes [1] and changelog [2] for full
details.

Note that this is an alpha release, and comes with no guarantees as to
quality or compatibility, and is not intended for production use.

I'd like to highlight the following major changes [3] coming in alpha2
since alpha1:

* Shaded client jars added by HADOOP-11804, provided by the
"hadoop-client-api" and "hadoop-client-runtime" artifacts.
* New filesystem connectors for Microsoft Azure Data Lake and Aliyun Object
Storage System
* Support for opportunistic container scheduling and distributed scheduling
* Additional improvements to major Hadoop 3 features like Timeline Server
v2 and HDFS erasure coding

Please try out the release and let us know what you think. We're currently
planning one more alpha release before freezing for beta, so this is a key
time to incorporate feedback.

Best,
Andrew

Re: Patch review process

2015-01-26 Thread Andrew Wang
Let's move this over to common-dev@, general@ is normally used for project
announcements rather than discussion topics.

I'd like to summarize a few things mentioned on the private@ thread,
related to streamlining the code submission process.

- Gerrit was brought up again, as it has in the past, as something that
could make the actual process of reviewing and committing a lot easier.
This would be especially helpful for small patches, where the mechanics of
committing can take longer than reviewing the patch.
- There were also concerns about forking discussions between JIRA and
Gerrit. This has been an issue in Spark, and we'd like to keep discussions
and issue tracking centralized.

- Some talk about how to improve precommit. Right now it takes hours to run
the unit tests, which slows down patch iterations. One solution is running
tests in parallel (and even distributed). Previous distributed experiments
have done a full unit test run in a couple minutes, but it'd be a fair
amount of work to actually make this production ready.
- Also mention of putting in place more linting and static analysis.
Automating this will save reviewer time.

Best,
Andrew

Re: hadoop-2.0.4-alpha bug-fix release

2013-04-01 Thread Andrew Wang
One of those failures is fixed in
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-9405 which looks like it got
into 2.0.5 but not 2.0.4.

Best,
Andrew

Oozie, I'll start preparing to make the 2.0.4 release later this week.

I am running 2.0.4-alpha build now to supply Bigtop 0.6.0 with official
 source
tarball for upcoming release of 2.0.4.

 The job URL is

At the moment 4 tests are failing on the branch:

   Folks,

To fix YARN-429 and a couple of other critical bugs, I've created
branch-2.0.4-alpha and necessary versions in jira etc.

Currently, here is the list of bugs slated for this release:
 http://s.apache.org/hadoop-2.0.4-alpha

Committers, please talk to me if you feel there are are other
blocker bugs which warrant getting into this release.

Just wanted to quickly check what is the status of 2.0.4-alpha.

Currently I see the following issues blocking it:

 https://issues.apache.org/jira/issues/?jql=project%20%3D%20MAPREDUCE%20AND%20fixVersion%20%3D%20%222.0.4-alpha%22%20AND%20resolution%20%3D%20Unresolved%20AND%20priority%20%3D%20Blocker%20ORDER%20BY%20key%20DESC

What's the consensus here on how complete that list is?

We haven't really finished Bigtop testing yet, since we currently
seem to be blocked on MAPREDUCE-4820 which means that
we may discover additional stoppers yet.

Still I wanted to know what is the overall thinking on what else
   need to go into 2.0.4-alpha.

   Thanks,
   Roman.

Re: Three questions about Hadoop

2010-01-05 Thread Andrew Wang
Hi Annie,

2010/1/5 qin.wang qin.w...@i-soft.com.cn

 Hi team,

When I try to do some research on Hadoop, I have several high level
questions, if any comments from you it will do great help for me:

 1. Hadoop assumes the files are big files, but take Google as an example,
 it
seems the google result for user are small files, so how to understand the
big files? And what’s the file content for example?

I think the big files means very large file (bigger than 64MB). Hadoop
use the HDFS as Distributed filesystem, the user log web log etc are
stored in HDFS, The engineers can use Hadoop to do analysis on the logs.
Anyway, i don't know whether Google puts it's web pags in the distributed
filesystem like this.

 2. Why are the files write-once and read-many times?

As mentioned in last section, the logs are stored in HDFS, these log are
write-once and alway used by engineers for severl times.

 3. How to install other softwares on Hadoop, is there any special
requirements for the software? Do they need to support the Map/Reduce
 module
 and then can be installed?

I just don't know what you mean, maybe you would like add additional jar
which used in your application, if so, distributed cache in hadoop will
help you.

Good Luck!

It will be very appreciated for your help.
