Re: [ANNOUNCE] Apache Baremaps 0.7.3 (incubating) released

2024-04-28 Thread Bertil Chapuis
Thanks a lot for taking the time to check the announcement. I cross checked
everything during the vote and then let my guard down for the announcement.

I now fixed the template for the announcement on our GitHub repository:
https://github.com/apache/incubator-baremaps/blob/9bb6650142a380f91f4294ed63e53df84001bef3/RELEASE.md?plain=1#L161

I also updated the download page to fix the copy paste error:
https://baremaps.apache.org/download/release-0.7.3

hopefully, our next release will go smoothly.

Hello Everyone,

The Apache Baremaps community is pleased to announce the release of Apache
Baremaps 0.7.3 (incubating). Thank you to everyone who contributed to this
release.

Apache Baremaps is a toolkit and a set of infrastructure components for
creating, publishing, and operating online maps. This new release addresses
most licensing concerns identified when joining the incubator, which is a
significant step for the project. In addition, there is now support for
PMTiles, which enables low-cost and low-maintenance map applications. Finally,
significant improvements were made to enable the creation of vector tiles from
the Daylight Map Distribution.

We are looking to grow our community and welcome new contributors. If you are
interested in contributing to the project, please contact us on the mailing
list or on GitHub. We will be happy to help you get started.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Baremaps 0.7.3-rc1 (incubating)

2024-04-23 Thread Bertil Chapuis
Yes, for this release, we conducted extensive verifications using the list of
compatible licenses provided by Apache. I believe that most, if not all,
remaining licensing issues were addressed, including the one found in the test
data. As honest mistakes can happen, we decided to retain the DISCLAIMER-WIP
for now, but additional vetting should be scheduled for the next release if we
decide to remove this file. Are there specific procedures to follow at the
Apache Software Foundation for this?

Thanks a lot for taking the time to cast your votes.

If we carry all the votes from the dev mailing list, we currently have 2
positive binding votes and 4 positive non-binding votes. I suggest we keep this
thread open until we get a third positive binding vote from the PPMC.

Best regards,

Bertil

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache Baremaps 0.7.2-rc2 (incubating)

2023-09-25 Thread Bertil Chapuis
I think we can close this vote. We will make the necessary changes and call for
a new vote for a third release candidate. Since we started the current release
process more than a month ago, I suggest we skip the vote for rc3 on the dev
mailing list.

I would also like to hear your thoughts on possible ways to accelerate the
release process. Some open issues on GitHub mention that the last release is
outdated (our examples and documentation have evolved). In this context, I fear
that many people may just silently move on when they encounter problems. As
highlighted by PJ Fanning, the disclaimer-wip can include a sentence like:
“Releases may not have been voted on by the community.” Could one possibility
be to release more often without voting until we address most of the points
listed in the disclaimer-wip? Ideally, I’d like to find a good balance that
makes the project more usable and attractive to potential users until we
address all the remaining issues listed in the disclaimer-wip.

Best,

Bertil

Thank you all for the positive feedbacks.

Following Calvin's comment, I contacted more contributors and added Léonard
Besseau to the list of committers. He would be interested to contribute to the
project in his free time.

Yes, this year, a colleague and I spent a lot of time on the basemap [1]. As we
progressed toward creating a full-featured map style, we encountered
limitations with the JSON configuration files and experimented with other
approaches (YAML, etc.). Eventually, we moved to javascript, which allows us to
split the configuration into several files and to manage complex styling
directives more easily (comments, variables, functions, etc.). The basemap has
now been merged into the main repository with a single commit [2]. My goal is
now to stabilise this feature and to focus more on building the community.

[Discuss] Baremaps Proposal

2022-09-16 Thread Bertil Chapuis
Hello Everyone,

Here is a proposal for Baremaps, a toolkit and a set of infrastructure
components for creating, publishing, and operating online maps. The proposal is
published on the wiki [1] and a demonstration of our base map is available
online [2].

The key challenge for Baremaps will be to create a sustainable community. We
appreciate anyone who would be willing to support us with bug reports, code,
mentoring or feedback.

Baremaps Proposal

= Abstract =
Apache Baremaps is a toolkit and a set of infrastructure components for
creating, publishing, and operating online maps.

= Proposal =
Apache Baremaps is a toolkit and a set of infrastructure components for
creating, publishing, and operating online maps. It provides a data pipeline
enabling developers to build maps with different data sources. It offers live
reload capabilities that allow cartographers to customize the content and the
style of a map. It includes an attribution-free map schema and style that
stimulates derived work. Finally, it provides services commonly used in online
maps, such as location search and IP to location.

== Background ==
The infrastructure components required to publish and operate large-scale
online maps are often closed-source, heterogeneous, complex, and expensive. For
instance: the visualization of maps in Web browsers or on mobile devices
requires processing and tiling large spatial datasets, such as OpenStreetMap;
the location of users based on their IP addresses requires aggregating and
merging data from network information centers; the ability to search in a map
requires indexing features based on text and spatial attributes in different
languages.

== Rationale ==
Web mapping infrastructure is often managed by large teams of developers (e.g.,
Google Maps, Apple Maps, Mapbox, etc.), which makes it hard to customize and
evolve. Apache Baremaps is a Web mapping infrastructure for the rest of us: it
enables individuals and small teams of developers to regain control over
spatial data and to develop custom mapping experiences. As a result, Apache
Baremaps facilitates innovation in niche areas where resources are limited and
customization is needed (e.g., sustainable mobility, civil engineering, urban
planning, environment monitoring, startups, etc.).

== Initial Goals ==
The primary goals are:
- to release a customizable attribution-free map schema and style;
- to publish a tiled world map in different formats (mvt, png, 3D Tiles Next,
etc.);
- to grow the community and attract new contributors;
- to release additional services and components (IP to location, location
search, etc.).

== Current Status ==

=== Meritocracy ===
Baremaps is a project initially developed by Bertil Chapuis. It has already
attracted outside contributors. Therefore, the process of electing new
committers and project management committee members should be natural.

=== Community ===
The need for Web mapping infrastructure is great, hence a good potential for a
diverse community mixing developers and cartographers.

=== Core Developers ===
The contributors to Baremaps include developers from academia and industry,
mainly located in Europe. The contributions include documentation, bug fixes,
and new features. Most of the development and communication currently takes
place on GitHub.

=== Alignment ===
Many critical components used in the geospatial community are released under
LGPL (e.g., Geotools, Geotoolkit). We are strongly aligned with the terms of
the Apache license. Joining the geospatial community at Apache will enable us
to be less reliant on components with contaminating licenses. For instance,
Apache SIS seeks to become an alternative to Geotools and Geotoolkit.

== Known Risks ==

=== Project Name ===
No trademark is associated with the Baremaps name, and the project is already
well referenced by search engines. The .com, .org, and .net domains are the
property of Bertil Chapuis, who agrees to transfer them to the Apache Software
Foundation unconditionally upon request.

=== Orphaned Products ===
There is a risk of being orphaned due to the small number of committers. Even
if the main contributor has no plan to leave the project, this is a problem we
need to address in the future.

=== Inexperience with open source ===
The initial committers contributed to open source projects in the past but have
only a few experiences with the governance of open source projects in a
Foundation such as Apache.

=== Length of incubation ===
We expect to achieve most of the initial goals within one year. However, some
other goals (e.g., growing a community sufficiently diverse and healthy to
leave the incubator) are harder to estimate and may span over a more extended
time.

=== Homogenous Developers ===
Most current developers work for the same
