Thats a bad idea. A patch will be going in to 2.3.X to not allow this.

YMMV and here's an explanation by comparison of my computer:
under 3dfx/Banshee+DRI if you run X and fbdev simultaneously, switch out
of X, load a graphical fbdev proggy then quit, the system halts.

A normal X server, or an fbdev/GGI one ? A normal X server will
program the hardware directly, I guess that normally is fine since it
puts the console in KD_GRAPHICS mode (telling
