Re: [Gimp-developer] Gimp User Filter

2008-05-23 Thread Torsten Neuer
Hi,

If the goal is not reuse of existing filter but creating new ones from
scratch there are already at least two solutions tackling it in
 slightly different ways.

 http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/schani/mathmap/ and
 http://pippin.gimp.org/plug-ins/gluas/

Well, you can also re-use existing filters. In fact several hundreds that
have been written for Filter Factory (not all of which may be useful though)
and are either in the public domain or otherwise freely available.

MathMap might be the best of all solutions from what I see, but also the most
complex. So far, UserFilter seems to be simpler to use for the average
graphician (I think) - plus it is possible to have filter scripts installed
in the Gimp's menu (which doesn't seem to be possible with gluas or mathmap
and which I feel is important for working with a filter that has been created
with such a tool).

But as you said: It is a different approach...

  Torsten

[Gimp-developer] Little question about development

2008-05-23 Thread Marco D'Ambros
Dear GIMP developers,

I am Marco D'Ambros, a PhD student in the university of Lugano
Switzerland. I am working in analyzing the evolution of software
system and a couple of years ago I was looking at the development of
GIMP.
I saw that a large number of commits in the GIMP cvs repository were
performed by an account called mitch. I was wondering if that
account was used by one developer only, who contributed with a lot of
code, or maybe it was an account used by several developers which
works as a kind of proxy.

I know this refers to not that recent times, but perhaps somebody
knows about it.

Thank you very much for your attention and congratulation for the
development of a really awesome software.
Cheers
Marco

[Gimp-developer] what are the strings with the | character ?

2008-05-23 Thread Cristian Secară
There are some string containing the | character (example: tool|_Zoom)
that, when translating (example for me: unealtă|_Zoom), they appear as
is in my translated menu (like unealtă|Zoom with Z underlined).
However, in English only the Zoom part is shown.
What is this / how should I treat it ?

This is a contextual help.

E.g. you can have same word in two different dialogs which should be
translated differently depending on context. This matters for some
languages and doesn't matter for others. So you just read the part
before | and make up your mind how to translate the part after |
character. Then you just put to translation the part after |, dropping
the part before | character and | character itself.

Does it makes sense? :)

Yes, but I would have never figured out by myself :)
So physically it's a template-only thing if I understand correctly.

Ok, thank you :)

GIMP translation is always coordinated by local GNOME translation
communities. If they do not provide basic information about such
things, they should fix it ASAP. Please let them know.

Kind of :)

You are not supposed to figure such things out by yourself. You are
supposed to have read the guidelines for translators in the GNOME
translation project. Doesn't it include this information?

By the way, I have just done a change to trunk that converts most
(unfortunately not all, due to technical reasons) places where a
translation context was used to the new scheme using msgctxt. This makes
it easier for translators. Instead of

  #: ../app/core/gimpchannel-select.c:58
  msgid command|Rectangle Select

we now have the less error-prone:

  #: ../app/core/gimpchannel-select.c:60
  msgctxt command
  msgid Rectangle Select

Please use the msgctxt when translating. If someone wants to add more
translation contexts to the code, please send patches...
