It is too bad "folder actions" aren't a part of Windows, it would turn
things into a 5 minutes task to get automated conversion / file moving
working from then on.

I wouldn't give up on TuxPain so quickly, they've done the hard part
for you already (making an interface a developmentally delayed
3-year-old can use (speaking from personal experience)). The
conversion/moving is the easy bit.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your help and replies.

I downloaded TuxPaint and gave it a try. The interface is
straightforward but the process of getting JPEG's from the digital
camera we're selling into PNG format and then into the proper folder in
order to open the files seems like a lot of work. (We're using Windows).

So it seems like a customization of GIMP may be our best option. Is
there anyone out there in GIMP developer land that would be able to
develop the simpler, kid friendly modification for us? (Please see my
original e-mail for some more details).

If you're able to develop this for us, please e-mail me and send me a
quote.

Thanks!
Jackson

I am, in opposite, very sure about Tuxpaint. We've tried it in schools
here and it's really good for younger pupils.

I'm not sure about TuxPaint, but there are a lot of similar
graphics programs out there.

Furthermore, you can

  - remove just about all the tools from the toolbox.
  - launch it via a command like `gimp frames.xcf` which would
load an image with the frames as separate layers.
  - add a plugin that places a resized SVG as a border on top of
the image.

[Gimp-developer] Wanted: Gimp Modification for Kids Product

2009-05-27 Thread Jackson Tam
Dear all,

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to simplify/customize the GIMP
interface for kids to use? We're interested in using GIMP with an
inexpensive digital camera.

We want to simplify things so that a kid could :

1. Easily paste custom clipart (like how a rubber stamp works)
2. Easily apply a custom frame to the photo (Preferably, the frame
would automatically re-size to fit the photo).

We also want to simplify the interface. Possibly by closing the default
tool palette and having a simple subset of those tools on a new floating
palette.

Is this possible to do with GIMP? How? Are there any legal obstacles? We
want to distribute this modified software on a CD-Rom with the camera
(and include the source code of course). The only thing that we wouldn't
be able to share with the public would be the clipart and frames which
would have copyrighted characters from a children's brand. The clipart
and frames would reside on the CD-Rom.

And is there a developer in this forum who would be able to do it for
us? Please send me a quote.

Thank you.

Jackson
