Presumably on a Linux system they are saved in ~/.thumbnails (On
rs\username\.thumbnails )

will ever support XCF, e.g. in gdk_pixbuf_new_from_file()?
Then at least some image viewers would get support for free.

created by GIMP. I hope that works across apps, it does work
