[Gimp-user] Update: GIMP 2.6.2 RPMs for Fedora 8 and 9

2008-11-08 Thread Johan Vromans
I've made a complete set of RPMs available for Fedora 8 and Fedora 9.

DISCLAIMER: They work for me. Your mileage may vary.

WARNING: Installing the new glib2 will make it impossible to upgrade
your Fedora kernel! This is a known bug (not mine). So before
upgrading your Fedora kernel, downgrade glib2 to its original version!

Fedora 8:

 Note that you don't need the devel and debuginfo RPMs for
 normal use.

2008-11-08 Thread Akshay Narayan

Try to use the Rescan font list command.
(click the font selection button - click the Open the font selection
dialog button at the bottom - some sort of refresh button appears at
the bottom of the opened window)

[Gimp-user] Windows 2.6.2 installer problem(s) - ATTN: Jernej(?)

2008-11-08 Thread Alec Burgess
I saw a request in Bugzilla that someone show output for gimp
--verbose command and being naturally curious ran it myself. (see
output below)

(1) One thing caught my attention in it:
=
(gimp-2.6.exe:4928): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon 'gtk-file'.
The 'hicolor' theme
was not found either, perhaps you need to install it.
You can get a copy from:
http://icon-theme.freedesktop.org/releases

(gimp-2.6.exe:4928): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_icon_info_load_icon: assertion
`icon_info != NULL' failed

(gimp-2.6.exe:4928): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_icon_info_load_icon: assertion
`icon_info != NULL' failed

(gimp-2.6.exe:4928): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_icon_info_load_icon: assertion
`icon_info != NULL' failed
=
checking the site referenced above I see a bunch of tar.gz files, most
recent being:
-- hicolor-icon-theme-0.10.tar.gz22-Nov-2006 04:02  33K

Question: does this indicate something that should have been done in the
build for the windows installer?

(2) Gimp internal help browser - BUMP
I asked on the dev list and never got an answer - probably because I
posted in the Announce-thread for 2.6.2
=
I'm still seeing the same Help-Internal browser problem:
 The GIMP help browser plug-in appears to be missing from your
 installation. You may instead use the web browser for reading the help
 pages.

I thought that this was something required some tweak to the Windows
build and was going to be fixed for 2.6.2. Did I misunderstand?
===
FWIW: Now, even when I set preferences to use online help and use web
browser its not opening in browser. (default browser Firefox-portable,
WinXP SP3)

Any suggestions?

(3) I have another question about overriding Folders-Plugins (GAP
related) I'll post in a new thread.

 (3) I have another question about overriding Folders-Plugins (GAP
 related) I'll post in a new thread.

Followup: turns out there is no problem here ...

I was confused by what the following lines were telling me:
==
INIT: gimp_real_restore
Skipping duplicate plug-in: 'D:\Program
Files\GIMP-2.6\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\gap_plugins.exe'
Skipping duplicate plug-in: 'D:\Program
Files\GIMP-2.6\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\gap_video_extract.exe'

Parsing 'C:\Documents and Settings\Alec\.gimp-2.6\pluginrc'
Querying plug-in: 'D:\Program
Files\GIMP-2.6\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\pyconsole.py'

(gimp-2.6.exe:1408): LibGimpBase-WARNING **: gimp-2.6.exe:
gimp_wire_read(): error

Initializing plug-in: 'D:\Data Files\Gimp-2.x_resources\plug-ins\pspi.exe'
==
On closer examination I see that it is doing what it should - skipping
the GAP related plugins in:
D:\Program Files\GIMP-2.6\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\ put there by the GAP
2.4 installer and using instead the (newer) plugins gap_plugins.exe and
gap_video_extract.exe found at:
Gap2.4 BugFix Files by =photocomix-resources
http://photocomix-resources.deviantart.com/art/Gap2-4-BugFix-Files-77466242
which I deliberately put in a separate location so I wouldn't lose them
if installing a new GIMP-2.6.x version subsequently.

However I'm still confused by: LibGimpBase-WARNING **: gimp-2.6.exe:
gimp_wire_read(): error

Does this indicate a real problem?

Googling [gimp_wire_read] I see a number of posts (apparently related to
GTK and/or Python and mostly MAC related)

Searching Bugzilla for [gimp_wire_read] I find two hits:
(1) Bug 483502 -- Save as dialog comes up empty on second use
(2) Bug 551243 -- crash in GNU Image Manipulation Program: I had just
clicked on s...
Both: Product: gtk+ Component: GtkFileChooser Version: 2.12.x Status:
UNCONFIRMED

Above are on Unix systems. I haven't seen any errors associated with
above but wonder if the warning message in --verbose output indicates
something just waiting to get triggered?

gimp_wire_read(): error is usually what you get when the plugin crashes
while talking to the main Gimp process. It's not a good thing.

Is a wrong impression

Gimp may use most (maybe all) of fonts included in windows as default, less of
the Extra Fonts that you may found on the net ..

To install new fonts in Gimp you may simply install them as font in windows

If some fonts do not show up you may try to copy them , paste in a new
folder,and from Gimp ,exactly from Edit/preferences/font add a path to that new
font folder and then reload gimp

That often help, if doesn't usually fonts are incompatible
(the fact that some other programs may use them here is not relevant except if
you want use that fonts with that other program )
