Of course, such a document does exist at remotesensing.org, and it
would be nice if the tiff plugin for GIMP simply kept the geotiff
tags in the file, but I guess it is one of the features of this style
of open source software development that you can have GIMP and GDAL
developed on the same model, but they can't interoperate.

It has been almost ten years since I worked with GEOTIFF files, but IIRC
they are just TIFF files with a couple extra tags telling you where the
image is geospatially located. That should mean that GIMP can open a
GEOTIFF fine, but there are no guarantees that it can keep the tags if you
then save it. Note, I haven't checked this in a long long time, but it did
work then.

Its more likely a plot by the publishing house to sell more books when you
release the second edition which covers the real GIMP 2.4 release. ;-)

The answer to both questions is no. It is unlikely that the file format would
be supported in GIMP unless there is a publically available document which
describes the file format. If there is such a document, it just takes an
interested party to create a plug-in for the format.

Hello,

Does the GIMP support GEOTIFF files? If not, are there any plans to do
so?

That is great news! Now I just hope it hasn't changed so much that my

Many users and developers were hoping for GIMP 2.4 to be released
around the end of summer last year. Alas, that didn't happen
because it took a long time to fix some nasty bugs, then it was
decided to include some new features because the release was not
ready anyway, then more bugs popped in, then it also took a while
to fix them, then even more features were added, even more bugs
were discovered and fixed, and so on...

It is not surprising that the authors of some books were hoping
for 2.4 to be released earlier. Maybe they were a bit too
optimistic, but I wouldn't blame them for that.

Now that we already have the first release candidate with lots of
nice features (and a few bugs that have already been fixed), we
are finally getting very close to the official release of GIMP 2.4.

Actually that book was written based on a development snapshot of
GIMP. I find it to be a very useful book IMHO. I'm not sure how
relevant it will continue to be though, based on the fact that the
author really seems to have jumped the gun in regards to the GIMP 2.4
release. When you think about it, that book has been out for several
months now, and was obviously being written for several months prior
to the release (as is the nature of any book). The snapshot she was
using could end up being far different from what 2.4 actually turns
out to be.

I still find it to be a good book with helpful tips though.

Hi Raphael,

this was very useful and interesting to me, thanks.
Although it wasn't me who asked for the jpeg compression levels,
I can really profit from this detailed information.

Keep at it! :-)
